Manga?

What have you all been reading? This was a while back but the Garo one-shot "Where on When" by Kouji Mikomo really blew me away, just recalled it now.

I'm currently reading 60ish different series, slowly. The best one at the moment is 3x3 Eyes, it really manages to make me buy into the adventure and I love the mixture of mysticism and inner city grit.

Theatrical Cartoon Shorts

I don't know about you all but there's a lot of fun to be had in watching old theatrical cartoon shorts - especially stuff from the golden age studios (MGM cartoons, Warner Bros cartoons, Walter Lantz, Terrytoons, etc.).
I was recently watching some of the early Walter Lantz Oswald cartoons, since people often forget Oswald went on for almost a decade after Disney left the picture. This particular short from 1930 has a really charming theme song for the character.

is there a tip to sort of correctly sumamrize or predict motions in animation like small subtles follow through or overlaps basically all the motion that naturally defines an action like in reality but correctly summarize into a sentence and such so to be recreated correctly
>in other words
the exact amounts, and position(also, directions, orientations) in 3d space
in proportions to the complete act itself

i figured already it follows the law of physics and newton's gravity, weight and speed which makes for distance and time

but after that the rest is not very clearly at all or more over it's not detailed enough for animation

Golden-Age Ethio-Jazz

Ethio-Jazz straight from the 70's golden age. Nothing but classic time after time during this decade and all of this genre's glory is attributed to mulatu astatke. Many contemporary/urban-influenced jazz from Italy also came out during the '70s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbnoPZu4Wp8

Let's make /ar/t! This can be traditional, digital, animated, anything goes. I've been working on learning how to draw decently myself (pic very much not related), so giving feedback to your fellow anons is appreciated. I've also implemented oekaki into the posting form in case you ever want to make simplistic drawings (i did one here based of an old guide)
this post was delayed a week because oekaki kept breaking but it works well now...

Need explnation, scientific perhaps, on how lines and volumes are placed accordingly

But there are not so good realistic art too despite both being realistic.

Does anyone remember what books these are?

Remembering a few young adult books that I would have read probably in the late 80s/early 90s, roughly. Can't remember the titles and haven't had much luck searching them up based on what I remember.

- Fantasy story where the MC's sidekick had a name I found pretty ridiculous, it was like "Pompoo" or something, pretty sure there was a "poo" syllable in it at least, because that's a great choice for a name in a kids' book right? The villain was described as having "a claw of iron", in full it might have been "a heart of stone and a claw of iron" but I'm only sure about the claw part. One of the chapters left off on the MC about to fall and grabbing what he thought was his friend's hand and it was like "but it wasn't a hand. It was a claw of iron". I forget what happened then but that chapter cliffhanger stuck with me.

- Fantasy setting that lays out the classic "whatever brave knight can slay the dragon plaguing our kingdom can marry the princess" setup, but the twist is that the princess runs away, gets herself outfitted with a suit of full plate armor, and goes around the countryside disguised as a man, hunting the dragon herself. Ultimately finds and engages the dragon in a really brutal battle where half her face gets burnt off and it almost ends in a mutual kill, but she gets that Sigfried type dragon blood magic that lets her understand animals who are having a conversation like "poor girl, if only she knew there was a magic healing spring right over there". So she recovers, goes back to the king while still in her knight disguise, demands the hand of the princess as promised and keeps pressing even after the king is like "but the princess has run away". When he finally promises to uphold the bargain if the princess comes back, she takes off the helmet and is like "and so my hand is my own to give as I please".

- Fantasy setting where there's this drug called "surka" (I think) that's basically wizard crack, powers up your magic power and you can do wizard duels for days on end but you might drop dead of overexertion afterwards. The royal heir ends up abusing it after being frustrated by a lack of magic power, and ends up burning their magic power out completely, only to be told "didn't you know the royals are always late bloomers", sort of a downer ending but it was clearly meant to be a "drugs are bad mmkay" type of story.

- Modern setting story preaching a "video games are bad mmkay" type of message. The basic premise was that these kids got hold of some gun-like device that if you "shot" someone with it, you would send them into a parallel dimension game world, but only if you pulled the trigger with real hate in your heart. One of the kids was named Mario (I'm sure the author thought this was very clever, even though the character generally went by the nickname Mars for most of the book). Mars was special because he hated himself enough that he could send *himself* into the other world without a helper.

- Modern setting where some kids have a club for their little friend group, and as part of the club stuff they start doing sacrifices to a papier-mache volcano as a joke. They end up contacting an actual demon called something like Yargh the Terrible (who resembles a tyrannosaurus) and tries to get them to "plant" the volcano so that it turns into a real volcano. They chanted "magma magma magma" during the rituals and ultimately stopped the volcano from becoming real by saying it backwards, "amgam amgam amgam". Pretty much the moral seemed to be "don't fuck around with demon worship even as a joke".

Any of these sound familiar?

80s metal thread

I just found this board and I already feel home, so I decided to start a thread about some of my favorite 80s metal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdhb2oG-d3A
One of the greatest prog/heavy metal albums of all time. One of the first metal albums to experiment with synthesizers and wow did it sound futuristic for 1986.
However, Queensryche reached their zenith 2 years later with this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8_JqGPteKk
Operation: Mindcrime, a politically-charged concept album about a drug addict named Nikki and his role in a shadowy revolutionary organization. The moral in short is that there will be jackals who exploit people with ideals for their own gain.
Another interesting one is Iron Maiden's "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMuGG0ajtCs
Their most progressive rock influenced release to date; similar to Queensryche's "Rage for Order" in some ways but still definitely feels like a Maiden album. Bruce Dickinson's vocals, the keyboards, and the interesting songwriting is a treat for anyone who loves this sort of proggy stuff.
Now, I know I posted 3 progressive metal albums in a row, and I just want one more before I move onto other things, so bare with me...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5TnV09-n9A
Voivod's "Nothingface". Extremely experimental for something from 1989, it's "proggish" but not in the vein of these other albums which are prog in their use of "grandiose" instrumentation and unusual songwriting, and while this album has the latter, it's in a class of its own. Perhaps the first "avant-garde metal" release ever; it's very dissonant, but also weirdly melodic. Sadly the guitarist, who went by "Piggy" passed in 2005.
Alright, now let's move on to death metal because I'm not a big thrash guy (I like thrash but I'm more of a death metal guy)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jldI2ZzYgFQ
Scream Bloody Gore by Death. I don't wanna get into the argument of "who did it first" in terms of death metal, but just know that this album is a classic for a reason.
However, I think one of the more prototypical brutal death metal albums is this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYjNHGUB5MU
Morbid Angel. The guitarist behind it would fit quite well here I'm sure (being that he's a huge Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, DOOM, and Quake fan).
However, one of my favorite death metal albums of all time is this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zM8EdasKf8
I suppose this also fits under "goregrind". I'd include Terrorizer and Repulsion but I think this band is better than both.
It has the punk edge as grindcore bands usually do, but the riffs are much more death metal styled; the tremolo picking and grooviness mixed with that dirty, punk-y grind edge creates an experience like no other. If you want one, just one grindcore album to carry with you, THIS would be my recommendation. British death metal at its absolute finest hour.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5IHWtvU2zo
Yet another death metal album from 1989! Autopsy's one of my favorite death metal bands of all time. Imagine Tony Iommi played in a death metal band and you'd get Autopsy. It's death metal for sure, having the scary atmosphere, atonal riffing style, and vocals associated with it, but there's a bit of Sabbath influence in the riffing with the thick, resounding single note riffs this album contains.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4mzIlZv4XI
So many albums here from 1989, but I had to include Obituary's "Slowly We Rot". Classic death metal album. Obituary's known for their groovy, simple death metal. No technical mumbo jumbo here, just some groovy riffs and brutality, the way death metal ought to be!
Post your own!

Retro Visual Kei

Does wapchan enjoy visual kei?

>What is Visual Kei?
Visual Kei is a musical movement that originated in Japan in the mid-1980s. Appearing out of Japan's punk and metal scenes, visual kei is an aesthetic, rather than a genre, pulling imagery from gothic rock, punk, shock rock, glam rock, speed metal and hair metal, often wearing elaborate costumes and flamboyant hair.
The movement expanded beyond it's hair punk and glam metal roots in the 1990s to cover a vast array of different subgenres and genres, ranging from extremes such as brutal death metal to accessible genres like synthwave.

old flash animation/nico video

I'm trying to find an old flash animation that used the song "言葉にできない"

A japanese meme or something back at the time.

It was a compilation of "fail" scenarios that constantly plays in Japanese everyday life... like dropping an entire bowl of instant soba inside the sink while trying to take the hot water out. /hkam/ - Hong Kong Action Movies

A thread/general for discussing the output (both good and bad) of one of the best and most prolific action movie generators ever: 20th century Hong Kong.

What's your favorite action film from the golden era of Hong Kong cinema? Mine's gotta be 'Yes Madam!' The action choreography is some of the best of the era, the cast of characters is great, the comedy is actually funny, and for once the plot makes sense! I've never shown it to someone who hasn't enjoyed it. Also Michelle Yeoh is a total babe.
