I invite you to play Battle-R
It is a competitive game in which you create a character by setting its
stats and catchphrases and then watching it compete against the characters
of other users.
It is essentially Soku minus all the useless GUIs

I hope you enjoy:

Adding on, check fumo.website for a list of resellers and everything else. In most occasions you'll need to employ proxies/forwarders to actually place the order on your behalf. Total price for me is around $110 USD.

There's a fumo project discord server where there's some sellers. I got my kaguya (picrel) secondhand from that server. Riskier though.

BTW, legit fumo can be identified with a tag, and if they're new enough, also a pin.

If you can work it into the story and get some nice gags, then fine. I can see a nice story setup where Shinobu keeps cancelling on them, so Ataru and Mendo get suspicious and start stalking her. They then misinterpret what they see, thinking something much more sinister is going on, the boys paranoia reaches a fever pitch, and they strike out to save Shinobu from the clutches of evil, then after hijinks, it turns out she's dating some random and nothing sinister.

Literally anything better than god damn Inaba. I don't think that tool ever once stood up for himself and let Shinobu walk all over him. Ataru and Mendo would have both called out her bullshit.

1. Vaguely similar art style and aesthetics
2. Young man from a disadvantaged background making his way up in the fight game (literally every boxing story at this point)
3. Tragic end where the protagonist ends up punch drunk and is totally fucked over.

 No.2772

Yeah but Hajime no Ippo gets boring fast. Talking - fight scene - talking. Is pretty much the structure of that show. It feels like groundhog day except it never ends.

 No.2775

File: 1724554869259.png (1.26 MB, 1415x1028, yabukiblu.png)

Considering Joe is THE boxing manga yea I would say he ripped it off or at least capitalized off its popularity. The other guy mentioned the different artstyles, but they don't mention the similarities. The muscle tone is clearly taken from Joe. It's like taking the Mcdonalds arch, turning it upside down, changing the color, and making a new burger chain. The details don't really matter, especially since Ippo is the crappier narrative, when it's obviously a ripoff, by that if it weren't for Joe it wouldn't exist.

 No.3649

I remember when George Murikawa drew a cover for Ring magazine and all the boxing degenerates were complaining about wapaneses.

 No.4090

All boxing fiction fixates on the underdog because it reflects the reality of the "sport" (really just legalized assault) and its what makes boxing appealing. You don't become a human punching bag if you don't have to. When was the last upper class rich kid from the suburbs to become a legit boxing champion? They are all poor kids, refugees, homeless people, ethnic minorities, proles from working families, and kids who were bullied at school. Now a lot of boxing fiction has this "pull yourself up by the bootstraps and be the self made man" theme which is bourgeois capitalist propaganda, as if individual effort can overcome hard societal obstacles.

Ashita no Joe subverts this theme because its heavily implied Joe dies in the end, slumping over in his corner so you can work your ass off, but you can never quite escape or it just kills you. So did boxing save Joe or did it kill him? If he's really dead, aren't we in someway complicit for cheering on a bloodsport where young men are beaten and severely injured? By comparison, Hajime no Ippo feels like a more sanitized depiction of the fight game with all the moral ambiguity stripped away.

 No.4111

Ippo references or cribs from Joe quite a lot, other than the stuff already mentioned. Like Takamura eating a tomato a day to diet like Rikiishi, one of the characters being essentially Joe with a kansai accent, the world champion being a pretty blatant expy of the world champ from Joe.

But if we're really to compare them generally then Joe just has much more substance. At the end of the day Ippo is for the most part a feel-good sports manga that tends to settle into a status quo and repeatedly reset to it for hundreds of chapters at a time, and most of it consists of throwing a kid with no personality in a boxing ring to win over and over again. Ashita no Joe is a study of a very complex character whose circumstances and psychology are constantly changing and evolving, gets into things like philosophy of life, and for as much as Joe finds meaning through picking up boxing it's much more upfront about him having to grapple with the destruction and even death that boxing can bring into people's lives. It's also a social commentary born from the social inequality that was lying underneath the perceived prosperity of Japan in the 1960s, where boxing doubles as a mirror against this (Joe feeling like he can get somewhere by embracing the rules of boxing whereas society remains unfair to Joe even if he conforms better to its rules and customs). Ippo is decidedly not this thoughtful.
Joe by the end has transformed from a brash juvenile delinquent to a quieter, more empathetic and more thoughtful man harboring a lot of guilt and alienation. Ippo's biggest problems are being upset about not winning a fight, and later quitting boxing and being worried about punch-drunk syndrome, both of which are things Joe did too, but with more nuanced context and a less one-note character, and without spending hundreds of chapters at a time teasing and blueballing the audience on the story going anywhere and endlessly repeating the same handful of scenes that never lead anywhere.

If we're looking at the art, just because Ippo's art has more detailed rendering doesn't inherently make it better. Chiba Tetsuya's art is clean, efficient, panels are well-blocked and composed, very readable. Ippo's action is notorious for how unreadable it becomes as the manga goes on; it's hard to believe but it was more than a decade ago that people started meming on the french fries flying around the ring all the time.
And if we're talking about the anime adaptations, bPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

The earliest digital anime were pretty rough, and they had a host of problems including:
>weak colors
>lack of contrast
>often a grey haze over everything.

I consider it a bit of a digital dark ages for anime and it took them years to fix these underlying issues.

Here is a fan edit attempt at correcting this. Stronger colors, contrast, and a CRT effect (film grain replacement).

Could fans produce entire fan edits of series to fix these issues?

Generally OLED or a good mini LED. OLED will have better viewing angles, better motion resolution, and typically less blooming, but top end mini LEDs are roughly on par with the best OLEDs in terms of contrast while getting brighter. The Sony Bravia 9 for example.

>CRTs?

CRTs are incredibly overrated and inflexible when it comes to video. The best HD ones top out 1080i and can be picky with signals. Only PC CRT monitors don't have these issues, but the largest ones are only around 20 inches, and they got prohibitively expensive a long time ago. Most hover around 100-120 nits. Even the best monitors like Sony artisans roughly have a gamut as wide as Rec.709, but with primaries shifted away from red. So, even the best CRTs can't display red as intended. They do have by far the best motion resolution though. You will barely see stutter on a CRT with a proper refresh rate. Their ability to display lower resolutions can also make bad SD anime transfers look a lot better. And, I have to admit that they do have a unique look. Something about phosphors is pleasant, but if you want phosphors you'd be better off hunting down a good Plasma. Something like a late gen Pioneer Kuro or a late Panasonic Plasma. You still get the benefits of phosphors and far superior motion with the benefits of a more modern display.

Since the series is turning 25 this year I decided to finally pick it up.
When I was buying the first volume the cashier asked me if I was buying it for a girlfriend. Sorry lady…this is for me, and me alone. But it is going next to my Sex and the City DVDs.
In any case, I've read up until Volume 8 since then and it's actually pretty wonderful? It might be a soap but its an awfully well written soap, and I just love love love Ai Yazawa's art. If it keeps this quality up it might become one of my favorite manga of all time, I think.
Anyways what does /digi/ think of it

I love Rookies, if it counts (started in 1998).

I really didn't expect to like it as much as I did but Kawato is such an endearing character that I just fell in love with the whole thing. Seeing him go out of his way to do so much for that baseball team even when no one else would and leading all the students to actually want to try in Baseball again was just brilliant.

My favourite part of the manga will always be when in one game he goes up to an opposing pitcher who has been struggling in the game so far, tells him he's doing a fantastic job, then goes to the opposing coach to tell him to stop fucking around. He should take that kid off the mound and give him actual coaching advice so he can grow into a proper player (and adult) instead of this weird humiliation ritual he was forcing him to do to teach him a lesson. Then proceeding to return to his dugout and screaming out loud "AHHHHHH WHY DID I DO THAT I COULD'VE GOT THE TEAM SUSPENDED"

It's truly a one of a kind manga and it saddens me that everything else the mangaka has done is not fully translated yet, even Rokudenshi Blues is taking 20 years to translate and is still around 40 chapters away from being complete.

When a girl starts shouting or talking loudly just to make a funny scene at least it's cute, when a guy does it it's just annoying. All the animes that I've enjoyed with a significant male presence didn't have much of it, I also feel that a story about a hikikomori would work much better if it was something serious. I can still give the novel or the manga a chance because there's no sound in those so I cringe substantially less…

I recently realized that I love Takahashi Rumiko's style.

I was raving about the new Urusei Yatsura's first OP to my friend, because even without knowing anything about the show you can just TELL how much care and love went into that sequence. I grew up on Inuyasha and I didn't realize until now that they're from the same creator - so now I wanna see what I'm missing out on.

My question to you based oldfrens is, do you think any of the remakes for Ranma or Urusei Yatsura worth watching over the originals?

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask, but if I'll find anyone who might have watched both, it's here. I want to give them the best chance I can without committing to both old and new versions.

Both can be enjoyed equally but don't let remake culture make you disregard the original completely.

originals have better openings, better insert songs, better endings, better synergy with the original manga, more memorable va performances and have better fan service. the new ones arent bad but feel kinda sterilized? still better than most modern anime though.

Maybe my favorite part of Touhou is its doujin scene. Bold statement, I know. Yet doujinshi recommendation threads are few and far between, and don't tend to last. So I figured out this was the best place to make a thread for anons to recommend their favorite doujinshi.
Let's keep it SFW for now. Both jp only and translated doujin, but clarify its status if possible.
I am going to start with a rather unknown one: 魔理沙が生理でがんばる本, or "Marisa does her best while on her period". Now, this sounds like a horrible idea, but the author, "am colon tiger", has quite a distinctive style in his stories, and I found the three works I have read of them (this one, the "Another" version of this story, and the "No control on Kirisame's [sexual] appetite"), to be quite enjoyable. Sex is a theme without devolving into NSFW (in fact, it is marked as "for all ages"), which is already quite inusual for a doujinshi, but he even introduces some drama into it… They are soft yuri, btw. And I think it hasn't been translated.

Questions: Do anons want nsfw too?
Should doujin series ("Osanareimu" etc.,) be included?
Anyway, post your.

 No.1881

I am going to recommend a doujin from an extremely well-known author, so that anybody who came here and didn't know about them already can check them out.
The author is karaage tarou, the doujin is "Read me a story, Miss Patchy".
This author's best known work is "Chireide". Which is really good, yeah (that's how I personally got to know both Koishi and Satori). But many of his other stand-alone works are quite memorable too: Jungle Patchy, Sanae Miracle, Super Speed Starters and Keine Box, among others, are quite delicious to read.
Pic related is really one among them, and all of those I've listed I would highly recommend.
karaagetarou has a charming style, both in his drawings (full-color most of the time), and in his stories, a mix of humor and drama that, when done best, is truly heartwarming. Sometimes the humor can be a bit overdone for my taste, and I might have a few doubts in the midst of a doujin, but by the end they are almost always forgotten in the light of true storytelling charm.
Most of them are translated, this one included: https://exhentai.org/g/637831/3b5b4b7069/

Tip: Patchouli's lasers don't hit you if you stand perfectly in center, the laser hitbox vanishes before it visually does. The fire projectiles also have a smaller hitbox on the sides and the way patchy shoots them always leaves big gaps between them, pay more attention to the smaller yellow projectiles there. Lastly, as I always recommend for EoSD, don't be afraid of bombing. The spellcards are RNG when it comes to density and speed due to the leftover PC-98 hidden rank system and some projectiles (especially Sakuya's knives) have a wonky hitbox that can hit you from a longer distance than you think.

Depending on what you watch I can see this. Digital anime has led to a lot of laziness. But at the same time anime that used cels were a lot more limited in what they were able to do in terms of art style. You wouldn't get something like FLCL or Shaft stuff using cels. The digital workflow allows a lot more experimentation and variation in art style because they're not working with physical cels but instead layers on a computer that can be messed with more without any permanent, physical consequences.

There is merit in the idea that limitations breed creativity though.

I tried watching the TV series, but I just couldn't stay with it. There first few episodes were all just a bunch of "funny" things happening, with no real overarching story arch. Is the whole thing just one lame comedy gag after another or is there a point where things start to get interesting?

An overarching plot does develop, but if you don't like the comedy I wouldn't bother. Patlabor (TV) is a comedy first and foremost.

See I would've assumed so but liking War in the Pocket made me think otherwise. Had I disliked that I would've given up on the franchise entirely. I haven't seen the movies I watched the original series.

>>1012
Eh, fair enough. I enjoyed it more for its unpredictability and underdog feeling over anything else, plus I enjoyed the small cast of characters and singular location for the most part. It felt like the six episodes really gave it time to grow and I appreciated that.

>>1013
Interesting, I gave them all 7's because at the end of the day I could still appreciate the work and effort that went into it and I didn't come out hating them but rather bored by them. They had their moments, cool designs, good music, some funny scenes and several engaging battles and scenes.

Prime Rose. It was my first Tezuka anime not counting Metropolis and it was absolutely mediocre. The animation is laughable and janky even for the time period it was made in, the plot was hastily thrown together and just peters off, and the fanservice wasn’t even that good either. I thought it would be fun but it ended up being tedious.

This movie sucked ass. I'm coming from the perspective of being a big fan of the manga, and I was already wary when it was announced and KyoAni would be handling it. But man, they really butchered it and it was super disappointing. All of the edges got sanded off in favor of making it a marketable, sanitized romance with some drama. I know the scope of a movie has to be different, so I can accept the side characters being ignored and mischaracterized, but it was still frustrating to see them shifted in favor of a tone that the manga never really had. What they did to the art style was also a shame. Just an utter disappointment in every way. It's not like the manga is incredibly bold and subversive, but I liked that the general relationship between the leads came before the romance, and I liked that the exploration of othering and discrimination was a huge element of that relationship and the story. Then the movie doesn't really deal with that beyond making it feel like a simple, trite conflict in their shared pasts rather than the massive problem that affects both of their lives. It turned something nuanced into slop.

>after years of hearing how great they were I was just left disappointed with the whole thing
>I've heard good things about IBO and Turn A so I'll probably give those a shot one day
>I've watched tons of shows that I didn't vibe with for ages so this felt no different but it just never did for me.
To me, this is where the main problem may stem from, without taking any blame off the quality of the shows themselves. Gundam fans really like Gundam, and it'll alter your expectations if you've been constantly exposed to their opinions of how much they love the franchise. IBO and Turn A in particular are some of the most polarizing ones in regards to quality, content, and how viewers vibe with them, and judging by what you say you want to see from Gundam, IBO might be right up your alley.

I've watched plenty of Gundam entries, and even I was disappointed when I realized most of them were kind of mediocre, but I still found something to like about them. I asked you about watching the 0079 movies because in the first movie the newtype concept is introduced early, whereas in the TV series it comes way later and feels like a last minute addition to the story. These small changes often impact the perception of what Amuro is as a character and what newtypes are in the grand scheme of things. I even felt the same as you did when Amuro was revealed as a newtype and was killing off everyone left and right towards the end of the show. What are the stakes now? Isn't he just going to win every fight? But then, he receives his greatest loss yet, one that helps build his character for the rest of the sequels.
0079, Z, ZZ to some extent, CCA, Victory, Turn A, G reco and Hathaway's Flash are all authored by Tomino, and you can expect something a bit different in each one. (Some people really get into them and the ideas that he expresses, some are more into Tomino himself rather than the anime he makes)

WiP, Wing, 00, IBO, and even 0083 could be called underdog stories by some people, but at the end of the day only you can say if it's worth watching or not.
The only Gundam series that I'd advice you to stay away from are Wing, Destiny, Origin, WfM and Narrative.

For Dragon Ball Z I've been checking out Dragon Ball Z Jartcut, that tries to remove as much filler as possible. So far I've only watched the Saiyan saga, I'd say it's pretty alright although I admit that some padding during the training for the saiyans would have been good, as it is it feels very fast (mostly an issue in the manga too).
From what I heard they were going to update it when the Seed Of Might Color Correction is released, using it as base.

Yeah, that one isn't hard to find because it got super overproduced. I haven't really considered nabbing it for my collection just because I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon. Right now I'm just waiting for a Saga of Son Goku DVD to pop up (and a "Red Ribbon Army Saga" DVD since those have vanished into the ether).

What I'm more excited to start collecting are the later DVD Box Sets- love how clean a lot of these sets were where you get Volume 1 of a "saga" and then fill it up with the other volumes. GT especially has four slick box sets that are probably the best thing about the show.

Welcome to something new… a PoFV tournament! July 19th at 12PM EST.

Rules are a modified form of the tournament standard:
1. All tournament sets will be played in a Bo3 (best of 3) format. This means that the first to win 2 full games in a set will be the winner.
2. The games are played on the Lunatic difficulty. (This is mainly to speed up sets)
3. The winner of a game in a full Bo3 has to stay on their character pick while the opponent who just lost has the option to choose who they want.
4. The map Misty Lake is recommended but not mandatory.
5. All participants must be able to host a game on Adonis2 with either Radmin, Hamachi or port-forward. Please prepare beforehand to make sure you can host, ask on the thread for a test partner.
6. Pausing mid-tournament set is not allowed but can be overlooked if it there was a good reason for doing so.
7. Replay auto save must be enabled in Adonis. After a match, zip the replay files into a single archive and send them in the cytube channel as soon as possible. These will be used for the stream, and shared as a tournament archive. Also make sure to edit your name in the Adonis2.ini file while you're enabling replay saving.

Sign up at https://challonge.com/tournaments/signup/Pni1FYVwy1 or drop your name below.

Streaming will be at https://stream.wapchan.org/r/touhoutourney

After you get the game, enter DDDSSSSQRR on the results page to unlock all characters if you haven't already. For setting up netplay and PoFV tips, visit https://maribelhearn.com/pofv

Never really got the feeling that Criterion cares that much about animation in general.

>>3568
Arguably Oshii's masterpiece. It's visually engaging and experimental in a good way. One of the interesting things about animation as a medium is that the creators are free to take it in any direction they want. Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai! gives you a stage play where the camera/viewer can be placed anywhere, and no special effect is out of reach. Plus, on top of that it's genuinely really funny. Tie it all together with animation from some of the best animators of the time (hashimoto, ohira, iso, ect.), and you have one fantastic OVA.

 No.3573

>>3572
>Never really got the feeling that Criterion cares that much about animation in general.

That is correct. They're kind of snobby and high brow and seem to think that animation is beneath them, or not part of their purview. They did release that Akira Laserdisc in the 90s, but that was before Akira had any good home releases that weren't just cropped VHS tapes.

You could make the case that there's a lot of overlooked and ignored Soviet, European, and Japanese, animation and some need restoration and care. They would have be high brow to fit the Criterion brand though.

I definely think we need a criterion for anime though.

 No.3576

>>3573
>I definitely think we need a criterion for anime though.
It would be nice. Feels like studios have rather random output with HD masters for their older anime. You might get one that's very well done and then another not long after that seemingly uses an older, worse mastering process. If Criterion were to remaster an anime you'd need something artsy, important, and I suppose something with no HD transfer or one done very poorly. The hardest part would be to decide which anime are the most culturally significant or important. For me, the one that leaps to mind instantly is the End of Evangelion. The TV show had an over all fantastic HD transfer sans episode 16, but the movie's transfer looks like an abortion. I feel that lots of films made during the transition to CG effects and digipaint suffer from this. While not entirely pre 2000s, Satoshi Kon's films are all perfect candidates. I did see that Perfect Blue was supposedly getting a new and better remaster, but the previews I saw did not impress me.

Alright, time to embarrass myself, starting with the greatest game ever played, just for posterity. I don't have anything deep to say about this one, but it's a really cool game and a hell of a good example for aggressive chess, so at least maybe some Wapanese will see it for the first time here. If this post is too big, bulky, or generally shit, just say so and I'll delete it.

Paris, 1858. White: Paul Morphy. Black: Charles II, Duke of Brunswick and Comte Isouard de Vauvenargues playing in consultation with each other.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6
Black goes for the Philidor Defense and already I betray my lack of chess knowledge. There's nothing outright wrong with this opening, so far as I'm aware, but I've never seen it mentioned without it also being said how passive black's position is. There's probably some playable line, but this definitely isn't popular compared to, say, the French.

3. d4 Bg4 4. dxe5 Bxf3
Morphy immediately destroys the center. Black trades on f3 because recapturing the pawn immediately leads to a loss of castling rights. (4… dxe5 5. Qxd8+ Kxd8)

5. Qxf3 dxe5 6. Bc4 Nf6 7. Qb3 Qe7 8. Nc3
Probably the main reason this game is so beloved is because of its simplicity. Morphy first creates a mate threat with Bc4, and when that is blocked, immediately threatens to take black's castling rights with Qb3. Black allows the lesser of two evils, that is, leaves the b7 pawn hanging as there's no way to stop both threats, but Morphy decides to keep developing- another point of brutal simplicity. The line I quickly looked at that goes into an endgame is (8. Qxb7 Qb4+ 9. Qxb4 Bxb4+ 10. Bd2 Nc6 11. Nc3 Rd8). Aside from the sheer hanging blunder that is …Nc6 12. Bb5 (I said I looked quickly), it's similar to the position the engine comes up with, with no apparent way for black to stop the queenside pawn storm.

…c6 9. Bg5 b5 10. Nxb5
All hell now breaks loose.

Here is fine - we can just use this as the chess thread for now even if it's not on the right board (with the restructuring it will probably get moved)

 No.2410

The first game in Alekhine's book. A really cool defense against the Ruy Lopez, sacrificing a rook and activating the bishop pair with 17… d5 and throwing an unstoppable attack at white's king. Goes to show what you get when you trade your most active piece for your opponent's least (not a trade per se but it might as well be with how many moves the knight makes for the rest of the game). There's a lot of variations in the book but I wanted to at least post the main line itself. Black's every move from 18 onward is so strong.
Did the tourney die? Hikari had the most active thread about it and it's been dead for two weeks.

The movie is REALLY cool, but the script is messy and it probably would have worked better without the UY branding. It's quite artistic and cinematic, with a very unusual storyline and messy script so it completely alienates the UY fanbase, and people outside the fandom won't see it simply because they think they need to see the rest of the series, or the series doesn't interest them.

I think if it was called "Legend of the Oni Princess" it would probably have more discussion among mainstream film critics.

Are there any sites out there in the depths of the Japanese web anything like comics.org that list what mangas ran in what magazine for a given issue?
Ones that are more specific and only list a few magazines are fine. Any sort of listings going into the publication history of magazines besides Shounen Jump would be useful.

Naw, I can think of plenty that are well animated most of the time. I haven't seen Trigun but 98-02 had more sketchily animated shows than before just because they started producing so much more so quickly. You go watch late 80s TV anime in comparison and generally things are much better animated.

Sure it's not a masterpiece by any means as far as the animation/production goes. But it's by no means a bad anime series. I have plenty of fond memories watching Trigun late at night on Adult Swim back in the day.

 No.782

I didn't think it was bad at all. Hell it was overall pretty good but it is one of those shows I can't go back to after reading the manga which was way better. The only reason I am offended by Lost Universe is that we got an ugly CG Gaiden instead of the proper adaptation we could have finally got.

But I think you're both being a little inattentive here. Anon doesn't actually mention the '50s or anything around the Astro Boy era, so debunking his point in light of that is kind of useless.
He seems to be zeroing in on the '80s as the 'start' of modern anime since some still present tendencies first appeared in that era, and from there poses the hypothesis that it was inspired by b-movies from the '50s through to the '70s, which would probably mean all that stuff that came after Astro Boy.
It seems like he's saying something like: "The generation of creators who grew up between the 50s and 80s grew up watching sci-fi b-movies and sex comedies and thus took inspiration from them in developing the newer wave of anime starting from the '80s onward, and that influence has lingered on until today"

 No.909

I would broaden it to American pop media in general, given 80s American action films and Bruce Lee defining FotNS plus other male-demo anime, or the cultural juggernaut of Star Wars showing up in everything. Hell, the homage culture Dirty Pair and Trek has is well documented by Trekkies.

 No.910

I can kind of agree with what you're saying
but still meh. Most of these comparisons hes talking about don't work very well. It's obvious this guy only watches ecchi shit because he treats all of anime like it's only ecchi. He mentions sex comedies, yet explicit sex in anime hasn't been around since the 80s and even the explicit ones were stuff like Wicked City, not comedies. Nowadays the only anime comparable to what hes talking about is ecchi where the most you get is implications and some boobs if youre lucky. Even shonen doesn't go beyond some innuendos or panty shots at most. And I'd say the majority of modern service (that isn't ecchi) is more comparable to stuff before the 80s. I can remember panty shots in 70s stuff like Lupin, Galaxy Express, Gundam, and Ashita no Joe to name some. Anime has always had that light, gratuitous side that isn't ecchi or sex comedy stuff. If anything, the 80s was just a phase of that side and modern ecchi may be inspired by that, but definitely not anime as a whole, which has always been gratuitous (Tezuka was into animal girls ffs). Then there's the examples he provides to support his claims. First, Kimagure Orange Road. Well even that doesn't match because Madoka (the character hes talking about) is a huge anomaly as an anime love interest. She is nothing like your typical modern day anime love interest and so to say shes proof of the connection is negligent because she doesn't even match the typical anime love interest. His second example is how much cyberpunk anime is based off of Streets of Fire. Again, anime has been doing scifi since before B movies (Astro Boy for example). As well as this, cyberpunk anime doesn't exist anymore nor many remnants of it, that could just as easily be remnants of the pre 80s scifi boom. But even in the 80s his claims don't hold very well. You could use pretty much any Western scifi movie as a comparison to 80s anime and, in this case, there exist much better comparisons that don't fit the B movie criteria. For example, Mad Max 2, Blade Runner, 2001 Space Odyssey, etc.. Is it more likely that cyberpunk was inspired by Blade Runner (1981) or Streets of Fire (1984)? Well if you cherrypick Megazone 23 and Bubblegum Crisis as the whole of 80s anime (which he does) it's known that Streets of Fire inspired these two, but even these Post too long. I'm not so good at sorting thru and putting down my own opinions here, but I think The Notenki Memoirs by Yasuhiro Takeda is a good book to read, for insight: He was a founding member of Gainax and grew up in the era under discussion. Here's an excerpt:

"When I was a kid, I don’t think I was quite the geek I am now.As far back as I can remember, television was always a part of home life. The same goes for comic magazines like Shonen Magazine and Shonen Sunday, which made their debut in this world long before I did. Since much of the anime and manga of my formative years leaned toward sci-fi themes and settings, that genre became (and remains) my favorite. I was drawn in by the strange and powerful lure of futuristic stories—the future seemed so sublime, and filled me with longing. For a kid in those days, this kind of thinking was par the course. But there were plenty of fun things to do besides watching TV and reading comics, and I certainly didn’t spend my entire childhood wrapped up in anime and manga. In fact, there was really only one difference between other kids of that era and myself—I liked reading novels. I’ve already forgotten what sparked that interest, but it was in the fourth grade or so when I became an avid reader. While other kids were running around the schoolyard, I was running back and forth to the library. (I don’t think it was a time when you bought the books you liked—if you wanted to read one, you just went to the library.) I was hooked on sci-fi and mystery. Of course, the stories I read were adapted for gradeschoolers, and I simply devoured them. To name a few, there were titles like Lupin and Sherlock Holmes, and authors like Arthur C. Clarke3 and Robert A. Heinlein4—sci-fi novelists from the mid-’60s, whose works were considered required reading. That’s not to say I didn’t read other works. I explored almost every aisle of the library… with the result that I became a library assistant by the time I was in the fifth grade, simply because I could stay there for hours on end. All I ever wanted was just a little more time to read. Looking back on it now, my only regret is that I never sought out anyone to share in my little world."

Interesting to note that he namedrops Robert Heinlein as 'required reading', so maybe the Heyuri guy isn't so far off as he seems. But I'd have to read the whole book to really get it.

In response to >>1262 I'll make a brief post about why colors were so damned good in cel animation versus modern productions.

1. Paint

They're quite literally using real world paints on plastic cels to photograph so the colors are much better quality and more realistic.

2. Film stock

They were shot on 16mm or 35mm film, and film stock had strived for decade for rich strong colors and strong contrasts. Most television anime was shot in 16mm film, and 35mm used for theatrical films or television OPs.

Then they shifted to digital formats, and with them digital color spaces and palettes. More washed out, lacking contrast, overly bright, like there's a haze or some kind of bright light out. This is also an issue for live action productions.

1997 was actually a bad year for Japan's economy. 1992 saw the economic bubble of the late 80s burst, and had already started causing a slow decline, and then 1997 saw the Asian financial market crash, which damaged Japan's economy even more. Even the mainstream Japanese music industry, which saw a boom when people could no longer afford houses and other big picture stuff, so would spend more on consumer goods, saw its peak right at 1998 when Sakura began to air.

NHK, Kodansha, and Sogo Vision funded Cardcaptor Sakura, not Clamp themselves. As a Kodansha manga serialized in Nakayoshi they would probably be the primary rights holders, and would be giving Clamp some royalties from any money made off of the franchise. Not that Clamp didn't have any say over how the anime went, but it's not like it was their project.

>Keep in mind, these were purely japanese studios with japanese employees whose profession was to make japanese anime.

Massive outsourcing to Asia for lower level jobs like inbetweening was already extremely common by then, Gundam Wing for example would start with layouts and rough key animation from a Japanese Studio (Dove) and then all the animation would be finished up over in Asia by their overseas subsidiaries.

>Then japan slowly spiraled into a forever recession and lots of the older experienced studios shut down or consolidated.

Like who? Sunrise, Toei, Tatsunoko, Pierrot, Deen, Ashi Pro, Madhouse, Gainax, Production IG, AIC, OLM etc, all the big established studios of the 90s persisted into the 2000s. It was more marginal studios like E&G that died out in the early 2000s.

The answer to why Cardcaptor Sakura looks as good as it does, is likely just because Madhouse gave it a good schedule and good staff. They also did X 1999 a few years earlier, which looks phenomenal as well.

Looks like Clamp actually did contribute costume designs and screenplays for the anime. Still, I'm not finding any evidence of them being on the production committee for it.

The economy is still pretty high all things considered, not exactly bubble era tier but still in the top 5 GDP surprisingly.
>Outsourcing to other countries
That’s has been done since the 60s, the golden bat anime for instance had some work done in korea which is also why it had a following there but couldn’t say it was Japanese. Also sunrise did some stuff as well, not as much but then all those Korean bootleg knockoffs begin to make much more sense as to where they got the character designs from lol

I remember it being pretty good, only disappointment was the Vanilla Ice fight getting truncated, but otherwise I can appreciate it for being an alternate take on the original story. In a way it makes it feel more similar to parts 1 & 2 (which are my personal favorites), with it's brisker pace and a focus on fights that drive the story forward. OST is pretty awesome too.

She has some kind of life-drain kiss so she's a Succubus? Is that the European variety or a Japanese one? No one's ever been able to pin her down exactly.

It's entirely possible Rumiko didn't think of anything specific so it's a red-herring.

It's nice to have a situation where the most popular one is the best as well.
For Sketchbook I recall it being decent but all the cat parts being shit. For GA for reasons I can't recall it's one of my least favourite Kirara anime. I really don't know what it did wrong to make me consider it Aldnoah tier but aside from remembering a surrealist episode being decent I don't remember anything else so have to defer to a list I made 6 years ago.

For extra art girl anime if I count New Game and Stella no Mahou they'd only be behind Hidamari. If I include mangaka and potters a few extra series would join them.

You know how in slayers, there is a multiverse composed of 4 worlds, slayers being one of those worlds and Lost Universe being one of the other? Tenchi muyo is like that but cranked up to 11. Every show is basically it's own dimension/seperate universe that is being manipulated by the three goddess's that created reality (3 of the girls from the show).

So each show tends to have its own theme and is a different genre. The most dnd/slayers like fantasy tenchi muyo would probably be "Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar" also known as "Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari" which is about tenchi's nephew being sent to a fantasy world called geminar where he has to pilot fantasy knight mecha and fight with abunch of fantasy races. But its closer to escaflowne than slayers. Either way, thats a 2000s show. In the 90s one, I think universe is the best. But its more like lost universe than slayers, it's modern fantasy scifi with a jp twist.

I know this is three years ago but this is such an insane opinion I have to say something. Nadesico does the subversive mecha telling otaku to go outside thing better than Eva and Excel Saga is an exemplar of deranged Y2K otaku comedy. Neither of them are harems, neither of them are close to harems.

Slayers was memorable to a strain of 90s wapanesemer because it was fucking funny. Pomp and pomposity aren't the only things worthwhile with older works.

It's time to play the retro otaku famous sport, finding old Japanese web pages! Now these days, various search engines have been filtering these pages, making them harder to find, but if you know a thing or two about old anime/doujin circles, this shouldn't be a challenge for /ar/.
Do pixelly oekaki scribbles make you blush? Does finding dithered old .MAG anime CGs make you cum? Then take note of these examples to find these types of images on your local search engine
>"index of" ~[insert generic japanese nickname here]
>"index of" ~[insert old PC model here]
>CG [insert 90s anime or 90s anime character name], "ne.jp", 1998.03.05 (this date is just an example, any date between the early 90s-early 00s will give you results)
Voila! You've done it. Now contribute to the thread with your various findings. Happy hunting, /ar/.

If they haven't bothered with a modern DVD/BD release, it's probably obscure. Though there's a slow steady trickle of new BD releases of old series.

Did anyone give a shit about Kentauros no Densetsu? It's not offensive, but it's not very good either and the art and animation are ho-hum. This is very typical of these obscure OVA/Film from this era. One thing I do appreciate though, is that the subject matter seems way more varied. Oh yeah, manga about bikers and turn that into an animated film about bikers. Would anything like this get made at all? I strongly get the vibe that this was meant to be a live action film from the way the script is written and how it's directed. Probably couldn't secure funding, so a cheap animated film was made.

>Most pre-1945 anime is lost forever
At least one can assume that the percentage of anime lost is very small compared to the amount of anime permanently archived, by virtue of how hard it is to just produce anime, and thus the limited quantity of anime that could be lost in the first place.
Manga? Manga is fucked.
To give you an idea, when in 1977 Kodansha started the massive Tezuka Complete Series, or the Tezuka Black Label, it was estimated that Tezuka had penned over 700 manga; the Complete Collection has 400 titles, meaning that about half of what Tezuka himself wrote is lost.
The Black Label took 20 years to print every manga they could find and some Tezuka remade from scratch (for example, the original printing of Shin Takarajima is lost, the one published by Kodansha was remade by Tezuka in 1984) and that's the best Kodansha could do.
It's not an exaggeration to think that there are more lost manga than known manga

 No.3705

The rise of listing sites and torrents have eliminated obscurity. That said, there is a LOT of obscure cel anime out there, and it's probably not possible to watch it all in a lifetime.
There are a lot of long comedy and shoujo TV series that are so generic and bland nobody's touched them, and you'd have to be insane to sit through them. On the OVA/movie side, there are a lot of crappy delinquent, romance, and seinen action OVAs with middling animation, one-note characters, and reused, watered-down stories – none of the insane stories, great animation, cool robots, and violence people think OVAs generally have. You will find some obscure historical movies and OVAs, which tend to be good, and many of which haven't been ripped or subbed. But that's it.

Yeah, honestly, the fact that it killed the franchise is what got me to put it on fifth place, I originally had it as fourth and went "what do I even remember about this movie" and remembered my own personal bias of "being bland is worse than being bad". I don't care for movie 3 more than movie 6, but I don't /actively/ dislike either of them and I remember parts of movie 3, so that's why I placed it at a higher rank.

Lum the Forever's script is very messy, but the story is mostly straight forward and you can think of it as "Lum meets an Old One".

The tree holds the seal on a yokai that drains the lifeforce (seemingly the most important figure in town) to feed itself. By killing the tree, they unknowingly unleash this being and continues to grow until an Oni princess was able to calm it and a new tree planted to contain it. Only that it led to her eventual death.

The story in the present is a repeat of the cycle, and
Lum fufills the role of village elder and the Oni princess, so she gets her life force drained and is going to calm the being leading to her death. The being is initially an egg, then a fetus, and it seems very child like and wants a mother figure, only being child like it doesn't know limits and seems to kill its mother figure.

Have you played Demon's Souls (2009)? It's another HP Lovecraft inspired story, where a vastly powerful being can shape reality, but it's child like and it needs a mother to lull it to sleep to calm its vast power.

The being wants Lum to itself, so it tries to erase people's memories of Lum. Then after lum is drained, it starts sapping on Ten. The tree grows powerful enough that it starts producing a fog that when breathed in connects the dreaming person to the tree's power and manifests their dreams as reality.

Mendo figures this out and starts a war of the Zaibatsus to force everyone to wish that things went back to normal and to destroy the manifested dream worlds in the cross fire. It's hare brained but kinda works?

Ataru simply wishes for normalcy as well and jogs like Lum used to job. When he falls asleep and connects with the being he wishes for Lum back. The fetus like being finally understands, that Lum belongs to Ataru and the rest of the world, and relinquishes her and goes back to sleep. Presumably another tree will be planted on it to seal it.

As I said the script? Messy with pacing issues and the story is hard to follow. It likely got re-writes for more action (hense the ending war) when it should have stayed a spooky mystery story. The overall story might have worked better as an original story. If it was called "Legend of the Oni Princess" the film would likely be much better received and liked.

For plus sides: some amazing scenes, score, and animation sequences. Mendo's date with Shinobu and his dream sequence are highlights of the film.

The symbolism is pretty obvious: Urusei Yatsura anime is over so move on. The first thing the being manifests is Lum on a tv screen, and the last image we see is Lum on a tv screen that fades away. The series was over, and the film is meant to be the send-off to it and a message to the fanbase. The fantastical being birthed by felling the tree is representitive of the Urusei Yatsura fanbase, and their obsession with lum is unhealthy. Go out into the real world and find a real woman and let Lum go. For message, Evangelion has a similar meta message for anime otaku.

This is unsourced from imdb, so take it with a grain of salt, but it does make sense. The next film is a direct almost 1:1 adaption of the comic, and then the next film was made much, much, later. To confirm or deny this, you'd have to check anime magazines from around this time, and most certainly someone at some point would have commented on it. The promotional interviews for Final Chapter would be the most likely spot where this would come up.

Sadly there's very little scanning of proper anime magazines from the 80s. There's thousands upon thousands of them so I don't blame them.

I have a pvm I haven't used at all but hopefully will be able to once I get a stand for it. Sadly only does s-video because it was probably just a security monitor, but it looks decent. Also need to install cfw on my ps3 so it can play jap dvds.

No. I'm a retro fan, not a hipster.

No for these reasons:
- I'm not a hipster
- Both VHS player and CRT tvs take too much space
- I don't have a CRT tv anymore
- I don't have favorite anime of mine at VHS anymore
- I prefer watching anime at my 42 inches tv with said anime being at best quality possible

I've got a late-90s/early-00s CRT that I bought from someone on OfferUp for like $8 (it has a crack on the back of it, but works just fine). N64 and PS1 games look about as good as you remembered they did back in the day on it, and I've got a Blu-Ray/DVD player hooked up to an adapter to an adapter. It's not the optimal way to watch newer stuff (Blu-Ray menus are next to impossible to read on that thing), but there's a nostalgic charm I like about it, especially when watching DVDs or VHSs on it. (Watching the Trigun DVDs on it was a magical experience.) I'm sure I sound like a caveman pleb right now to CRTfriends who know what they're doing, but that's what I've got going on in my room
