Any chance we could get Criterion to remaster a few? They'd have to be culturally significant, and high brow artistic.

Why does /cel/ think of this criminally underrated OVA? It's got some of the greatest character acting I've ever seen in any animated series. And no remaster.

Hey wapchan.
/jp/ is trying to make a touhou visual novel, but they're having issues with coordination.
Someone floated the idea of using an altchan, so I'm here to see if anyone supports this idea.

unfortunately no, we're waiting on models for locations to be finished, some minor coding tweaks if they need to be made, and for the end of the Marisa route to finally arrive along with one other route (either by me with Ran or through someone else, preferably the latter but i'll still get that other route done eventually either way). i have been taking that break so i can work on my own projects for a little while but i would like to get back to writing this soon. especially with how far Marisa's route has come. if i'm the main one being waited on here though then i'll be sure to jump back into this as soon as i'm able.
>>1051
>it may be helpful to make one on kissu as well
i've been thinking about this since you made that post and i think i'd be pretty comfortable with managing a kissu thread as well for those over there that are interested. my only desire would still be to come back once we have some more substantial progress to show is all, wouldn't want to spread what we have too thin in case others still need time. having this be something that exists across multiple /jp/ instances would be neat but could hinder progress if it's done too soon.
>>1194
how have those models been coming along by-the-by? unless you've been focusing on other aspects, i was thinking about sending over another update email but there hasn't really been much to report anyhow so i figured talking here was alright too.

>Art style

Starts off as a very 70s looking series with very skinny females, and unrealistic proportions. Ataru is especially unrecognizeable in early chapters. Rumiko's art style evolves, with more realistic proportions and more curves for the women. Faces are quinticential 80s style.

>Focus

Starts as Shinobu and Ataru are accosted by "Urusei Yatsura" with some inspired by Japanese folklore. Then it's a Lum and Ataru will they or won't they story focused on Tomobiki high school. Introduction of Mendo and Onsen Mark becoming a regular character, and Sakura becoming the school nurse, mark the change. Lum spends less and less time wearing her tiger striped bikini.

She was supposed to be a one-off villainess after all. Urusei Yatsura was supposed to be an episodic series where Ataru and Shinobu struggled with Ataru's curses for ghosts, aliens and his penchant for womanizing. Lum became such a fan favorite that Takahashi re-worked the whole series. This is like fundamental Urusei Yatsura knowledge.

The story and setting got re-written since they didn't have a plan and just responded to what worked and what fans seemed to like. The early premise seems to be Ataru and Shinobu (remember her?) being accosted by Urusei Yatsura on a weekly basis when they just want to get on with their lives and get married. Lum was just going to be a recurring harlot who is trying to break them up because she wrongly thinks that Ataru is engaged to her. Then the story was retooled to be about Lum and Ataru being together with Shinobu as the side character.

Then it was retooled AGAIN to focus mostly on Tomobiki high school - making it the prototypical high school anime. Characters like Sakura, Mendo, or Ryunosuuke have nothing to do with the original premise, but they end up taking a majority of screen time once they're introduced.

Rumiko's later works were more planned out with a more consistent premise because she and her team had more experience in what fans wanted. If they knew how the series would play out, UY would probably be a supernatural series with no aliens centered on the high school and town from the get go. Other than electricity and flying around, the fact Lum is an alien is irrelevant for 75% of later UY stories. Could have easily made her and the Oni come from subspace to begin with.

Wapanese Channel creates /djn/ offshoot: Touhou, Visual Novels, and fanworks

Following the Vanishing Imageboard in Digital Paradise incident in the middle of this month, Wapanese Channel has been a place of refuge and reorganization for many affected. The administrator, figamin, has been making efforts to welcome the new arrivals, and also to help them assimilate to local culture. One large class has been categorized as those users who post primary and fan-made content for shmups, VNs, and other doujin works. At the time of the incident, this discussion was relegated to a board it shared with general computing and gaming, but it was quickly made apparent that one board could not hold both topics comfortably after the increase in site activity. It was this fact that spurred figamin to create a new board, /djn/, specifically for this type of discussion.

The decision has been accepted and even hailed as good by many. Still, it is not without controversy.
Most grievously, after it was announced that the board would allow character threads, several readers contacted me to voice their opinions that it was ridiculous that no Tengu threads had been made.
Furthermore, it has been alleged that figamin is working with a local impoverished shrine maiden in exchange for a cut of the donations she hopes to receive from these new users.

This article, as always, aims to spread awareness, but my work does not end here. Rest assured, I will continue personally monitoring this incident, as well as reaching out to figamin for comment.

>That's because they've already been fed by their t*ngu overlords
Crows are always pining for more food if they can get it safely. If they can't stomach what you give them at once, they will take some bits, leave, hid that food somewhere and then return for more in few minutes.
Once crows recognise you as a food dispenser, something must pique their curiosity enough to distract them before they stop coming. And they will surely be back sometime later.

>You could try setting out a bowl with peanuts or walnuts or something, somewhere that the squirrels don't try to raid.
Depending on the composition of birds in your area, you could also try leaving some bigger chunks of meat (giblets are cheap) just high enough so vermin and stray cats won't spot them immediately. In urban areas crows are one of the few birds that will go after bigger carrion (only other birds that I've saw eating from my spot were magpies) and they tend to notice it quickly. If there is a body of water nearby, then there could be competition from various gulls, though, and it can turn nasty. And in rural areas there are many other birds that will be interested too.

Aya was one of the first Touhou characters I saw after I finally gave in and decided to get into the series. This is probably the first picture I saved of her. It was too cute, too silly, and yet so honest. She barged right into my mind just as you'd expect from her, and right away I knew who she was, which was more than I could say for most of the cast, even in the games I was playing every day. Her occupation was incredibly charming, of course. The idea of a photographer and journalist running a modern newspaper in an otherwise rural Meiji setting, and zipping around at the speed of Tengu to gather or deliver information was just too good, and it allowed her to interact with every single character believably. With Bohemian Archive, she did a lot to make Gensokyo realer and yet more dreamlike at the same time. In that way, how she is a mix of tradition and modernity, and what she reveals to us, she has to be the quintessential Touhou character, only behind the two protagonists, but just barely. And that's not even touching on her personality. She's earnest and forthright—I'm not talking about her articles, but herself: at every turn, in every game, in every manga, with every bullet she fires or dodges, she was Aya. Wholly, unapologetically, with her own mix of intelligent and obliviousness, but she was always Aya.

 No.1277

File: 1747206878445.png (1.44 MB, 1018x1500, 80.png)

She was always easy to love, but it kept getting easier as I played Shoot the Bullet. Each "eureka!" of figuring out a scene, each wave of relief when it was done, the excitement of moving onto the next, and the continual improvement in dodging, it all happened with Aya by my side. And the reward for each scene? A few of her words, another tiny glimpse into Gensokyo, quite literally through her lens, and if I was lucky, her smile, her pure glee at whatever fascinating scene she had happened upon. Loving her was easier than anything I'll ever do again.

Even so, I didn't want to admit it. The more I focused on her over anyone or anything else in Touhou, the more I realized just how much she would bother me. All of her traits that make her funny, but only when they're directed at her fellow Gensokyoans, would be turned towards me. She's too outgoing. She would question me, correct me, photograph me. She would be flying around all the time. Her work ethic is too high, and I would always be second to the newspaper at best. She really does have one of the most annoying types of personality conceivable for a man of my own temperament. And yet, and yet… She was exactly what I needed and inside I knew it. When I fell in love with her, I wrote out how and why, and it would be nice if I still had that short file. It grew deeper and deeper until I didn't care anymore, and was absolutely hopeless, writing songs and poems and stories. And now, with any picture I take, or anything I write with an ounce of intent, with use of rhetoric, I can't escape thinking of her.

While Aya isn't my 2wife (though she's certainly up there), you put into better words than I could some of my thoughts on her. Her design, personality, and the bombastic ZUNpets of Wind God Girl, she's a fantastic character, and one that's hard to go wrong with when writing fanfics. Whether she wins, or more likely loses, she's fun to read and watch.

Does she, though? I know some will cite either of the current manga, and probably even examples in older works, but she's unbeatable. Not because of power, or wits, but because of her spirit. There have been few obstacles she can't get over, around, under, or through in some way, and when met with those few that have existed, she simply turns aside. "It can't be helped," and then on to the next scoop. Whatever anyone says, in Gensokyo or here in the outside world, it doesn't matter to her. She can't be beaten, because she doesn't let herself be beaten, and her smile always comes back no matter what. Out of everything, that's her biggest strength and source of freedom.

Oyuki didn't do anything wrong unless you count being cheap. Benten's shenanigans were also all on the level. They don't compare to Ryoko at all.

Ryoko didn't suffer too much, admittedly. I didn't really mind though, she mostly only tortured Mendo and Tobimaro. Tobimaro absolutely didn't deserve it, which made it a lot funnier. And Mendo being the voice of reason was a fun contrast to his usual self.

We know Rumiko has an interest in mythology, and that Lum, Benten, and Oyuki, are clear parllels to real world mythological figures. Ran is the odd-one out and for 40 years fans have tried to figure out which specific mythological creature Ran actually is.

She has some kind of life-drain kiss so she's a Succubus? Is that the European variety or a Japanese one? No one's ever been able to pin her down exactly.

It's entirely possible Rumiko didn't think of anything specific so it's a red-herring.

I like that one too. It works well with Aya's speed so you hook around the rim of danmaku while waiting for your camera to charge. It's simple but effective.
My personal favorite is Kokkuri-san's contract in how both it looks, plays, and how fitting its theme is for Ran's character. It starts slow to get you used to the gimmick, but slowly ramps up as Ran plays the part of Kokkuri-san moving the coin planchette you're forced to sit inside of. Fitting the nature of the game it's a timeout spellcard that gets harder and dangerous, the danmaku increases and the space to dodge it shrinks, until suddenly the game's over and Kokkuri-san leaves.

I like Necro-fantasy a bit more than Necrofantasia even if I also like the latter a lot. Necro-fantasy feels "noble" if I were to describe it whereas Necrofantasia feels like you're fighting a horrifying being which fits given that Yukari could potentially be practically unbeatable in concept.

I don't attribute Necro Fantasy to Ran much anymore. It's a remix of Necrofantasia which sits firmly in the Yukari park, but as you said it's "noble" which still fits her. In that regard you could apply Necro Fantasy as something like a prelude. The last boss before the secret boss that messes with your expectations.
Charming Domination on the otherhand fits her to a tee, and it's her theme in UDoALG which cements it. That I think is the quintessential Ran theme.

I'm going to paraphrase what HE said in multiple streams in the past few months so no one accuses me of "defending him" but he said he has always considered it pretty tedious and slow to look up for hours for the right stock pictures for the backgrounds and later combining them and shopping them. So I'm sure we're all familiar with that episode of uy where the school gets a new hard ass teacher who instantly starts crushing on lum (can't remember episode number). anyway, sensei gets called a lolicon for being into lum-chan. but lum isn't what we'd think of a loli. she's married, full sized, and has big tits even if she's the same age as ataru which is still kinda old for a loli. So I went and looked around at the loli hentai that was being made in the mid 80s and so far its what you'd expect. but its not like i'm the lolimaster or something and know what i'm talking about... r-right fed-chan? so did the word's meaning change? did the whole flat chested bratty midget thing come later? afaik lolicon means like "pedophile" in modern Japanese. gotta be a loli history guide somewhere. You can think of early UY as a nexus that many, many, film makers, writers, and animators, were part of who then went on to other things.

Kanako's films were part of the "pink film" genre of erotic softcore films and ran under the Nikkatsu Roman Porno line. So it's telling that right after UY, he's directing erotic films that are quasi pornographic.

If you take a listen to what she is actually saying, the localizers were actually having some fun. Shinobu is being referred to as a Zashiki-Warashi, as she was sometimes compared to early on in the series. This is a yokai that resembles a child and is commonly shown with a similar haircut as Shinobu.

"Ep. 9, Story 17: "Princess Kurama, Sleeping Beauty"

First Impression: Kurama's first impression of Shinobu is not at all flattering. Kurama calls Shinobu "Zashikiwarashi," which are household guardian spirits in the Toohoku ("Northeast") region of Japan, which is the area of Honshuu (the largest of the four main islands of Japan) north of Kantoo, and is known for being cold and covered in snow a lot of the time. These spirits typically have the appearance of a plain, immature, round-faced, rosy-cheeked girl with a bob haircut, which happens to describe Shinobu very nicely at this point in the series.

…"

https://archive.animeigo.com/liner/out-print/urusei-yatsura-tv-series.html

Animeigo is the source of these subtitles as far as I can tell and these are their liner notes. They're also why some fans think Ten is named Jariten.

Rumiko added Ryu-chan instead of starting a new comic because she was bored of UY. Ryu actually fits the new setting and theme of the series which is revolving around the whacky hijinks at Tomobiki high school. Benten is more of a left-over from the original design where the comic would revolve around alien-yokai that show up and harass Ataru because he's unlucky.

Sorry if I replied so late, but I agree with your statements. But I will form a quick counterargument that some people would make about your opinion on the backgrounds of the reboot.

Many would probably say that having high quality backgrounds won't matter because of how fast the reboot's pace is. On top of that, some people may say that you're nitpicking every last detail of the original so you can give it a much lower rating.

Now I don't really believe in that counterargument but I decided to write it out for you so can debate it.

As for standalone viewing I can agree that this episode is not very good.
I also did rewatch the original's first episode just for reference and I can see how it does things way better the reboot. Like it being actually funny (mostly part 2 of the episode).

Overall thou I can understand your arguments on why my ratings for the original are null. I just wanted to give the reboot a shot.

She's a crow-goblin and human hybrid, rather than a pure blooded native crow goblin. It's relevant since her race are these tiny little crows (even the women). This means her samurai dad stuck his penis into one of these little crow ladies, and out popped Kurama. This might be why they had trouble finding a mate for her.

Tip: Patchouli's lasers don't hit you if you stand perfectly in center, the laser hitbox vanishes before it visually does. The fire projectiles also have a smaller hitbox on the sides and the way patchy shoots them always leaves big gaps between them, pay more attention to the smaller yellow projectiles there. Lastly, as I always recommend for EoSD, don't be afraid of bombing. The spellcards are RNG when it comes to density and speed due to the leftover PC-98 hidden rank system and some projectiles (especially Sakuya's knives) have a wonky hitbox that can hit you from a longer distance than you think.

Most "retro anime fans" start with the OVA boom of the mid 80s, which I have soft spot for of course, and if they get a little spicy they might go for the early 80s or even 78/79.

Yeah, I'd love to watch more stuff from the 60s, but no one's willing to sub it. I made my anime club watch the first (the only one subbed) episode of Star of the Giants and they seemed to enjoy it. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to sub all 182 of the anime that invented filler, but man, there's a lot of weird, experimental shit in there. I'd like to watch at least some of it.

The first episode especially has a lot of creative mixing live-action and animation, like in this scene (sorry, don't know how to make a video of it)

Yeah, honestly, the fact that it killed the franchise is what got me to put it on fifth place, I originally had it as fourth and went "what do I even remember about this movie" and remembered my own personal bias of "being bland is worse than being bad". I don't care for movie 3 more than movie 6, but I don't /actively/ dislike either of them and I remember parts of movie 3, so that's why I placed it at a higher rank.

Lum the Forever's script is very messy, but the story is mostly straight forward and you can think of it as "Lum meets an Old One".

The tree holds the seal on a yokai that drains the lifeforce (seemingly the most important figure in town) to feed itself. By killing the tree, they unknowingly unleash this being and continues to grow until an Oni princess was able to calm it and a new tree planted to contain it. Only that it led to her eventual death.

The story in the present is a repeat of the cycle, and
Lum fufills the role of village elder and the Oni princess, so she gets her life force drained and is going to calm the being leading to her death. The being is initially an egg, then a fetus, and it seems very child like and wants a mother figure, only being child like it doesn't know limits and seems to kill its mother figure.

Have you played Demon's Souls (2009)? It's another HP Lovecraft inspired story, where a vastly powerful being can shape reality, but it's child like and it needs a mother to lull it to sleep to calm its vast power.

The being wants Lum to itself, so it tries to erase people's memories of Lum. Then after lum is drained, it starts sapping on Ten. The tree grows powerful enough that it starts producing a fog that when breathed in connects the dreaming person to the tree's power and manifests their dreams as reality.

Mendo figures this out and starts a war of the Zaibatsus to force everyone to wish that things went back to normal and to destroy the manifested dream worlds in the cross fire. It's hare brained but kinda works?

Ataru simply wishes for normalcy as well and jogs like Lum used to job. When he falls asleep and connects with the being he wishes for Lum back. The fetus like being finally understands, that Lum belongs to Ataru and the rest of the world, and relinquishes her and goes back to sleep. Presumably another tree will be planted on it to seal it.

As I said the script? Messy with pacing issues and the story is hard to follow. It likely got re-writes for more action (hense the ending war) when it should have stayed a spooky mystery story. The overall story might have worked better as an original story. If it was called "Legend of the Oni Princess" the film would likely be much better received and liked.

For plus sides: some amazing scenes, score, and animation sequences. Mendo's date with Shinobu and his dream sequence are highlights of the film.

The symbolism is pretty obvious: Urusei Yatsura anime is over so move on. The first thing the being manifests is Lum on a tv screen, and the last image we see is Lum on a tv screen that fades away. The series was over, and the film is meant to be the send-off to it and a message to the fanbase. The fantastical being birthed by felling the tree is representitive of the Urusei Yatsura fanbase, and their obsession with lum is unhealthy. Go out into the real world and find a real woman and let Lum go. For message, Evangelion has a similar meta message for anime otaku.

 No.2109

This is unsourced from imdb, so take it with a grain of salt, but it does make sense. The next film is a direct almost 1:1 adaption of the comic, and then the next film was made much, much, later. To confirm or deny this, you'd have to check anime magazines from around this time, and most certainly someone at some point would have commented on it. The promotional interviews for Final Chapter would be the most likely spot where this would come up.

Sadly there's very little scanning of proper anime magazines from the 80s. There's thousands upon thousands of them so I don't blame them.

Self explanatory. For me it would be three late 80s Studio Comet produced TV shows all with Hirosho Kanazawa as character designer and heavily involved as an animation director. I believe all three are manga adaptations, and they all have the similar kind of pudgy faced caricatured character designs that are really unique. High School Kimengumi, Tsuide ni Tonchinkan and Meimon! Daisan Yakyuubu. The latter two I watched raw, with Tsuide ( screenshots shown here) being a well executed slapstick comedy, albeit a bit repetitive. Meimon is an incredibly well done sports drama with storyboards that feel somewhat reminiscent of Dezaki, as it was his student, Hiroshi Fukutomi who directed it. The animation quality was outstandingly good and consistent, full of subtle weighty convincing motion during the baseball games. Kimengumi has its movie subbed and I enjoyed it, but the series has yet to be picked up.

Here's the thread this board was missing. Let's talk about Made in Abyss.

 No.814

I remember when /a/ would do story time whenver a new manga chapter was released. Those were fun and interesting threads. I feel like editor-kun was able to keep the author's autism in check when the series wasn't as popular as it is now. And as a consequence, the whole story suffers from it. The organization using the orphanage system to raise child soldiers and then deploying them as cannon fodder was always in the background of this setting, but hinting darkness and outright showing abuse and gore are completely different hings. I think the anime has too much shock that it becomes less shocking. Shocking things are more impactful when you are wrapped up in the mc's naivety and positive attitude. You could forget the bad stuff while reading the manga, because chapters were months apart. But that isnt how anime releases work, so you just get bombarded with negative imagery with little chance to cooldown or recover.

>I think the anime has too much shock that it becomes less shocking
I disagree. I watched the anime (including dotds) before i read the manga and i found it to be quite tame in comparison to what''s actually shown in the manga. At some point in the manga during the ganja squad story there's a literal sex scene involving Pakkoyan and Vueko that's absent in the anime and a lot of the "shocking" stuff is cut.

Oshii used Mendo as a vector for his militerism fetish while the comic merely had him have some glasses wearing bodyguards. Did he go too far? The show makes Mendo a tad bit more menacing than perhaps Rumiko had intended. The two-parter where they're used by Mendo to try to thwart Atru from getting Lum back makes Mendo a bit of a Bond villain.

The Mendo Army: Good or bad? It was a nice excuse to see various bits of German hardware from the Wehrmacht or Bundeswehr from MP40s, Leopard 1A5. It basically vanishes after Oshii leaves.

This is just whining about the endings, since Inaba is tied into it and likely created to head off any chance of Shinbu and Ataru thinking of marriage in Boy Meets Girl.

A better ending might have Lum and Ataru breakup, so Shinobu and Ataru decide to go through with the marriage after all. I would still have Lum and Ataru back together in the end. I'd probably have Shinobu and Mendo paired up.

Inaba breaks up the main dynamic of the cast.

If you can work it into the story and get some nice gags, then fine. I can see a nice story setup where Shinobu keeps cancelling on them, so Ataru and Mendo get suspicious and start stalking her. They then misinterpret what they see, thinking something much more sinister is going on, the boys paranoia reaches a fever pitch, and they strike out to save Shinobu from the clutches of evil, then after hijinks, it turns out she's dating some random and nothing sinister.

Literally anything better than god damn Inaba. I don't think that tool ever once stood up for himself and let Shinobu walk all over him. Ataru and Mendo would have both called out her bullshit.

Often overlooked, I think there's a lot of good retro anime based on historical events that get often overlooked. Let's have a thread about them.
I'll start with Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari, adapted from the 1868 novel Little Women about the lives of four sisters during the American Civil War.

These might not seem significant, but if it's not done it's rather noticeable and the absence is why a lot of modern productions (especially American) are very visually bland.

Adventure Time is used as an example, but I could have used endless examples. No negative space, every section seems filled, and nothing stands out visually.

This might be premature and the site will be back up before Wednesday, but I wanted to see if any of the people who read my threads on /a/ would prefer I stick to my schedule and post the first volume of Rinne this Wednesday here or simply delay it until the site is back up. What would Hanyuu do for a cream puff? That delicious delicacy she craves is something she would probably do ANYTHING for. What an amazingly powerful sweet, to be so effective on an alien-god. And yet, it would be so easy to tamper with that cream puff, to make Hanyuu move to your whims. Put in something spicy, and she'll cry. Put in an aphrodisiac, and she'll pounce you before long. But perhaps, if you fill it with something else…
Collecting a large amount of semen can be hard, but it's worthwhile as to your aims. Preparing it all in a large jar, hidden away in your room, is easy, if time consuming. Once you've got what you need, all you need is a syringe, and a cream puff. Hell, if you felt like going faster, you could probably go to Angel Mort and talk to all the otaku customers; they'll be sure to contribute to the nefarious scheme. However, you have later plans that would interfere with this, so you decide not to do that.
You start simple. Every day, you give Hanyuu a completely normal, completely innocent cream puff. This becomes a habit, a thing between the two of you. At lunch time at school, you open up your bento box and pass a cream puff to Hanyuu. She starts looking at you with sad, teary eyes if you take too long after a while, and that's when you know when to move to step two.
Now you start giving her the cum puffs. And miraculously, amazingly, she doesn't notice. What degeneracy must she have gotten up to in her youth? The idea boggles your mind, but furthers your boner. A step three and four are sure to follow after that showing. Each cum puff you serve her makes the next easier, your hands less sweaty, but your mind continues to race. You do this for a few months, in preparation for the next step.
Step three is finding out just how accustomed to the taste she is. You prepare a handmade cum puff, without any cream within it. You pass it to her, sweating bullets, screaming in your mind that this was a bad idea. She takes it with a smile and a hau~, puts it in her mouth, takes a bite, and swallows. The sound of her throat moving, the sign that this dirty goddess is eating YOUR semen, is both hot and scary as fuck.
…She takes another bite. She doesn't notice. You have successfully accustomed Hanyuu to the taste of cum instead of cream in her cream puffs. Excellent.
And now for step four. You get her a drink of milk to start the club day off right. Needless to say, it isn't milk. As she guzzles it down, youPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

I liked Nurse Angel Ririka a lot too and it's a shame it was apparently cut short. I'm interested in if the manga has any additional content (like the Tokimeki Tonight manga vs the anime) but based on the length, probably not.

The manga of Hime-chan no Ribbon is one of my favorite magical girl things. The anime is good too but doesn't have a good conclusion imo.

In response to >>1262 I'll make a brief post about why colors were so damned good in cel animation versus modern productions.

1. Paint

They're quite literally using real world paints on plastic cels to photograph so the colors are much better quality and more realistic.

2. Film stock

They were shot on 16mm or 35mm film, and film stock had strived for decade for rich strong colors and strong contrasts. Most television anime was shot in 16mm film, and 35mm used for theatrical films or television OPs.

Then they shifted to digital formats, and with them digital color spaces and palettes. More washed out, lacking contrast, overly bright, like there's a haze or some kind of bright light out. This is also an issue for live action productions.

Clamp had the resources from 11 successful manga projects and had done 3 other ovas before launching card captor sakura with almost 10+ years of industry connections. And considering they were also a group of relatively attractive women in a field dominated by lonely men… maybe they just made pretty girl faces at everyone to get good deals for their first big anime :o

Another aspect was that the 90s was the last good decade for the japanese economy. And Clamp made a ton of money during the 'good' times of the japanese economy and was able to dump an absurd amount of it into ccs. Not only that, but there were lots of experienced animation studios competing against one another due to the good economy being able to afford multiple studios existing so they were able to get 'more' for their money. Keep in mind, these were purely japanese studios with japanese employees whose profession was to make japanese anime.

Then japan slowly spiraled into a forever recession and lots of the older experienced studios shut down or consolidated. Companies started switching to digital cg to save money, and started outsourcing to south korea and china. It became harder and harder to get real japanese artists to work on real japanese anime and those that did remained in the field would often complain about long hours, low pay, and horrible deadlines which resulted in lower quality products.

1997 was actually a bad year for Japan's economy. 1992 saw the economic bubble of the late 80s burst, and had already started causing a slow decline, and then 1997 saw the Asian financial market crash, which damaged Japan's economy even more. Even the mainstream Japanese music industry, which saw a boom when people could no longer afford houses and other big picture stuff, so would spend more on consumer goods, saw its peak right at 1998 when Sakura began to air.

NHK, Kodansha, and Sogo Vision funded Cardcaptor Sakura, not Clamp themselves. As a Kodansha manga serialized in Nakayoshi they would probably be the primary rights holders, and would be giving Clamp some royalties from any money made off of the franchise. Not that Clamp didn't have any say over how the anime went, but it's not like it was their project.

>Keep in mind, these were purely japanese studios with japanese employees whose profession was to make japanese anime.

Massive outsourcing to Asia for lower level jobs like inbetweening was already extremely common by then, Gundam Wing for example would start with layouts and rough key animation from a Japanese Studio (Dove) and then all the animation would be finished up over in Asia by their overseas subsidiaries.

>Then japan slowly spiraled into a forever recession and lots of the older experienced studios shut down or consolidated.

Like who? Sunrise, Toei, Tatsunoko, Pierrot, Deen, Ashi Pro, Madhouse, Gainax, Production IG, AIC, OLM etc, all the big established studios of the 90s persisted into the 2000s. It was more marginal studios like E&G that died out in the early 2000s.

The answer to why Cardcaptor Sakura looks as good as it does, is likely just because Madhouse gave it a good schedule and good staff. They also did X 1999 a few years earlier, which looks phenomenal as well.

A little off topic but kinda wanted to clarify a few things.
>Last good decade
The economy is still pretty high all things considered, not exactly bubble era tier but still in the top 5 GDP surprisingly.
>Outsourcing to other countries
That’s has been done since the 60s, the golden bat anime for instance had some work done in korea which is also why it had a following there but couldn’t say it was Japanese. Also sunrise did some stuff as well, not as much but then all those Korean bootleg knockoffs begin to make much more sense as to where they got the character designs from lol

Very simple to participate - just upload a replay (results screenshot is optional). Make sure the replay is the only file you upload or it won't be attached (will try and fix this soon) Be nice. Don't cheat.
I've played this game a few times over the past few years, but have finally started to try and get decent enough to 1CC (still only on easy with max lives and bombs). I'm sure at least a few of you can beat this with higher difficulties.
Top players will be immortalized on a soon to be added static page.
If someone feels like making OC (not reposting existing stuff) they might get on that page too. Get shooting!

It's a little bit of everything. Aside from the gameplay, music, art (despite people poking fun at it), cute girls, and being in the right place at the right time on 2000s internet, I think it grew because the world is as open-ended as it is. There isn't a cool plot or any defining climax, and at the end of every incident everything goes back to the status quo, but that's why it's so appealing. Gensokyo is a world, not like those made by modern worldbuilders who over-detail everything from the start without any purpose and think they're going to be the next Tolkien, but like Wind in the Willows: a place you can daydream of, between old and new, between fantasy and reality, and as whimsical as can be. What you see in the games and writings is just a portrait, a brief snapshot of that world, but the rest is on the other side. Artists and writers and even completely unskilled fans latched onto that so they could explore it.
Seeing picrel this morning helped me put it into words. They're on some whimsical errand in their old-fashioned motor car, and you can imagine what happens before, during, and after. At the end, everything turns out fine. I daydream a lot, so this is all a personal view, but I think Touhou is something stronger than fantasy: it's a fairy tale. That's what makes it different and special.

If you want to see a small part of how it grew, here's an oekaki board that goes back to before PCB was released. It's fun seeing people make art for characters as they come out. https://coolier.net/oekaki/191.htm

To keep it on-topic after all that, I'm working on my first lunatic no-bomb run and Remilia is a big jerk.

Hoo boy, The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil… My first contact with the actual Touhou experience back in December of 2021, when I had finally to take the dive. The first 1CCs came on January of 2022, on Normal; between April and July, I achieved all Hard 1CCs and Extra clears in that game. EoSD was fun to play.

This is absolutely not a scoring-focused run, but it is still my highest-scoring regular run through the game. Have some Hard ReimuB.

You posted this on /a/, didn't you? I respect the grind. Here's a recipe I found on the Tabasco website that seems worth exploring.

Santa Fe Western Omelet Tacos

Ingredients:
>TABASCO® Green Jalapeño Sauce (3 tablespoons)
>Vegetable oil for deep-frying
>5 (8-inch) corn tortillas, cut in half
>15 large eggs
>1/4 cup half-and-half
>10 tablespoons olive oil, divided
>1 cup diced smoked ham
>1 cup diced red bell peppers
>1 cup diced onion
>1 cup diced, seeded tomatoes
>1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
>1/2 cup sliced green onions

Preparation:
>Heat vegetable oil to 375°F in a deep fryer or skillet; add tortillas a few at a time and fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and keep warm.

>Combine eggs, half-and-half, and TABASCO® Green Sauce in a large bowl and beat until combined.

>Heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in an 8-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add 2 tablespoons each of ham, bell pepper, onion, and tomatoes and cook 1 minute; stir in 1/2 cup egg mixture. Cook until set, then flip.

>Sprinkle omelet with 2 tablespoons cheese and fold in half. Place one fried tortilla half on a plate and top with omelet; place another tortilla half on top. Repeat process with remaining ingredients. Serve omelets with sour cream and guacamole and sprinkle with green onions.

So who would you rather date? Say you had a meeting with the truck and got isekai'd into a Rumic 2D paradise. Now you have a choice between these two ladies.

>EXHIBIT A. Lum
Perks? She's an alien princess of a mighty and powerful space empire. That's a big step up from your shitty earth bound existence. Not only are you never short of funds but she has a personal army and a UFO to boot. The downside is she will use these things against you if you upset her. She's not entirely used to earth customs, which can be an advantage and a disadvantage depending on your taste. she' also hawt as hell and not afraid to flaunt it. The downside is she appears to be some sort of sexual sadist who shows love by frying her darling with volts of electric. Her ability to fly and access to a UFO mean you'll never escape her. But I guess that's fine if your into masochism.

>EXHIBIT B. Shinobu
Cute, petite, and none of the alien stuff that make Lum so weird. She's not as good looking as either, a bit pasty and thin compared to Lum with breasts that'd make a lolicon drool. Cute over sexy. But Shinobu is confident, upstanding, intelligent, and usually clam. This makes her fairly reliable in serious situations that require the use of common sense and a functional human brain. Her earthly human family should be somewhat easier to deal with than Lum's. By far her worst drawback is her explosive temper and ability to throw around furniture like a pro wrestler. So much as glance at another girl and you'll risk a steel chair to the head.

So which will it be? Who do you choose? Is there someone else feeling left out?

Personally, I'd marry Lum for the political connections and make Shinobu my concubine, unless the Oni tolerate polygamy then she'll be our sweet co-wife as God intended.

The original series premise is normal couple Shinobu and Ataru being accosted by "Urusei Yatsura" (obnoxious aliens), which then shifted to having Lum being more prominent but still as a foil for the couple. So the early stakes are how Ataru can reuinite with Shinobu. That's why the first OP is so heavy in focusing on this.

After that however, the series is retooled with Lum as the main heroine. Shinobu is now clearly not dating Ataru, but she's still in the series, often as one of the four main characters (with the addition of Mendo). Rumiko clearly doesn't want to ditch her, but she also doesn't know what to do with her.

Meanwhile if the anime for the first two seasons wants to fill time, they often give Shinobu or Mendo something to do. Shinobu has a lot of scenes where she's still scheming or seething at Lum, which is mostly gone in the manga.

So it's still weird to see the early series still play this up, and to see Shinobu even showing any damn interest in Ataru at all. She's still willing to make up with Ataru and is glad he's showing interest in her.

Later Shinobu is just another girl for Ataru to be leecherous towards, and then punish him with violence. There's almost no hints that they were going to get engaged.

Also as written originally: the space babes are exotic and sexually provocative, while the Japanese Shinobu is chaste and demure. There is meant to be a big contrast between the two, while later the line is much more blurred. Shinobu gets more outfits and fan service and Lum becomes quite chaste and innocent herself.

Is it me or does the online lain fandom miss the entire point of the show? I'm pretty sure the message isn't that Lain is a cyber goddess or pushing some kind of tech gnosticism or accelerationist pseudo-philosophy.

The general themes seem to be on Japanese family breakdown, lonliness and atomization, and technology causing a hyperreal breakdown of the world. There's also the conspiracy history of the internet being invented by aliens but also theological stuff about the soul and religion too, which I'm guessing is just added on as a way to create artificial depth.

No. Lain isn't making a metaphysical claim about the nature of reality. Its really more of a sociological point. In the past, we drew a line between reality and the representational world of print media and when computers became a thing we drew a line between irl and cyberspace. But now everyone's connected and always using the internet, stuff happens online and moves into the meatspace so the line bertween irl and cyberspace has become really blurry. The vast amount of unfiltered information makes it hard to know what's true or false so we end up confused and misled. You see this happen to Lain. She gets wrapped up with a hacker group online run by Masami, but it just turns out that Masami is trying to get revenge on his former employer and he seems to be luring teens into suicide for the fun of it. The narrator tells us Masami is dead but how do you know that's true? He sounds like an authority figure, you know those voice overs in documentaries, but it could easily be fake. Maybe Masami is dead and one of his flunkies is using his persona over the wired?

The tone of SEL is very negative. You see a kid playing a computer game not realizing his mom is dead, the power lines and machines are always dark and scary looking, Lain's entire family is dysfunctional. Her father is addicted to his computer, her mother is cold and distant, her sister is living a double life having sex with older men, and Lain starts acting cruel towards Arisu for the thrill of it. There's hamfisted alien imagery that symbolizes how tech is like an invader colonizing our lives and conspiracies about human experiments. The show is mourning the loss of a more traditional Japan so its not accelarationist.

For the Oshii whining in some Lum circles, you'd think he didn't direct some of the best Lum action in the entire show.

The movie is REALLY cool, but the script is messy and it probably would have worked better without the UY branding. It's quite artistic and cinematic, with a very unusual storyline and messy script so it completely alienates the UY fanbase, and people outside the fandom won't see it simply because they think they need to see the rest of the series, or the series doesn't interest them.

I think if it was called "Legend of the Oni Princess" it would probably have more discussion among mainstream film critics.

Taking a shot in the dark here to see if anybody might be able to lead me in the right direction.
Im trying to find complete raw in any video format of the original broadcast version of the Hellsing TV anime. If you are not familiar with what that is the show originally had many scenes redone for what i guess was more "consistentcy" after it aired and for home release. This isnt about what is better just interested in something complete to watch.
I found a few random episodes here and there but not the whole show complete or unsubbed/dubbed.
Obviously some sub groups back in the day had them for their uploads but those groups are all dead and gone, nyaa doesnt seem to have it and all the resources i use to look for older stuff has dried up.

I don't know if this is much help. But there's this Youtuber called Johnny Joestar who worked on making remasters of some of Ishii's unreleased tracks for Hellsing (i.e. Golden Ball Heaven) and he even collaborated with Ishii to make some original tracks.
Anyhow a while back he did a comparison video of the old broadcast footage and the final version. And in a followup video he mentioned that the broadcast footage was on Japanese DVDs before the "Rescript" versions. And that a youtuber named Shockwave984
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3nvXEz2MXA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0X7bCwE9aE
However, unfortunately, some people in the comments mention that this DVD doesn't actually contain broadcast footage, and it only appears this way due to the fact that the promotional art of the DVD uses screencaps from the broadcast footage.
So unfortunately, the broadcast footage might be lost media. I definitely remember seeing the old footage used in some AMVs and it's how Johnny Joestar got a lot of his footage, but I don't know if we'll ever find the full uncut versions of every episode. You might have better luck with the Lost Media Wiki.

 No.802

>>801

Thanks for the reply.
As you can see in >>502 for the rescript releases they came out right after the series ended its initial broadcast run. This is the earliest release out of all the domestic and foreign releases of Hellsing TV.
However, they definately dont contain the broadcast version.
All the broadcast episodes i found on Veoh by dead fansubbers right before it died so if there was any more there its gone now.
Such a shame really.

 No.804

>>802
Then yeah, unfortunately it would seem that you'd have better luck going to the Lost Media Wiki and asking there given how good their track record is at finding stuff like this. There is a chance someone might have the episodes in their hard drive somewhere, I think it's the best/last shot for now.
Part of me wants to say that there's a chance that some obscure Hellsing fansite has it. But at the same time, I think Hellsing's popularity in the west only really got traction after the Rescript DVD already released, so that's the only thing that makes me think otherwise. But still worth a shot. Plus given we have documentation like AMVs and comparison images ( >>372 )
and whatnot, I think there's definitely SOME chance someone still has all the broadcast era episodes. I know it's pretty redundant to mention, but I think these are the only possible leads I can think of.
The other last (but unlikely) possibility is some of the foreign fansubs. Since I am fluent in Italian, I could also try looking into some Italian sites regarding the Knights fansub group mentioned before, but I doubt I'll find much. But I'll also try and see if I can find anything there, even if I think it'll probably be a dead-end.

 No.805

>>804

When i looked into it i believe soldats was the only group that fansubbed all 13 episodes. The eastern european groups i found episodes of had soldats on them so they subbed over their rips.
I believe knights only did the first one and stopped.

Nevermind, after digging around some more, I found even older 2hu fan content. First pic was made 8 days before the release of EoSD promoting its launch. You can check out this archived japanese fan page here: https://web.archive.org/web/20020803184126/http://nightlights.atarashi.com/zun/
This website also featured arrangements of the PC-98 game soundtracks, a really rare PC-98 era Touhou fan site.

There's also the second picture which I found at an archived Japanese imageboard thread dating back to August 24, 2002, if anyone is curious about it as well, you can read it here: https://web.archive.org/web/20021005182251fw_/http://merkmal-2nd.hp.infoseek.co.jp/allroom.html

Not really art related but on a sidenote, I also found an archive of this fan website that featured a MIDI arrangement of Shinki's theme song that was released in 2000 but made in 1999 https://web.archive.org/web/20001030145224/http://www2.plala.or.jp:80/joter/midi.htm

Current /cel/ has too much nostalgia wank. Too little quality show discussion. Manga is also 100x bigger and more varied and has better quality controls than retro anime to boot! Posting is very stale for what should be the core of the site. It should be about new discoveries, new 16mm scans, preservation projects, new laserdisc scans! Let's use this thread to highlight projects in the retro anime scene. I'll start:

A fansub of an anime short included in a V-Jump Festival '95 Video VHS tape, themed around Dragon Quest and starring Slime was released a few weeks ago.

A LOT of manga chapters never got adapted, as the anime ended about 2/3 of the way through the show, so there was only a trickle of important stories that got adapted into OVA or films. A lot of hte anime adaptions are also wildly different from the manga counterparts that they might as well be original episodes.

I think that my favorite Anime soundtrack is probably Akira's. I love the prog, traditional, and ambient fusion that the soundtrack has. Geinoh Yamashirogumi's entire discography is fantastic as well. Akira's soundtrack essentially has two sibling albums as well. Ecophony Rinne and Ecophony Gaia. Rinne is my favorite ambient album. If anyone enjoyed Akira's soundtrack I highly recommend listening to these if you haven't done so already.

Rinne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yvm2PUgP9_s
Gaia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS1wkJqU3G0

My second favorite is probably Turn A Gundam's soundtrack. I believe that it is by far Kanno's best. The soundtrack is nostalgic and refreshing. The mix of British folk sounds and wide open Coplandesque feeling pieces perfectly fit the show's Amerian setting.

This is a long one text post, so head's up:

Looking for a Mystery and-or Horror Anime that was on a T.V Anime Block (maybe be SyFy channel?*, or even Starz)

See, I watched on a anime on a TV block back around… I'd like to say around the 2010's, probably the mid-2010's at best guess.

I remember watching it around Halloween time as it appeared on either the Syfy channel or the Starz channel that was promoting "Mature"/"Adult" anime (blood, guts, nudity, etc) on either a limited anime focused block (to test the water or something) or of a pre-existing one 'just changed for the holiday season.

I've been trying to find this anime for years with no luck, but I do remember a few good chucks of the first episode that may help identify it; though again, it has been a good few years since 'so my memory is hazy on full details, and may have mixed or confused other details over the years .

The initial premise of the anime, if I recall correctly, was set in a high school where a fresh female teacher got a assigned to a new school 'specifically a class of trouble makers/perverts. Her colleague showing her the ropes is a buxom, blonde haired, sultry sexy type; with a red open long-sleeved blouse (or dress shirt) black mini-skirt[*?], garter sock stocking and heels.she has a very laid back attitude, with an aloof personality. given the school she works in is pretty bad (I think)

the new teacher is a glasses wearing, black haired 'braid (either a single braid ponytail, or braided twin-tails) a green jersey & matching sweatpants; which given to her by said colleague as protection, since as soon as she walking into the class a pair of male students are laying on the ground to take an up-skirt photo of her, which fails thanks to the track-suit given to her.her personality is quiet and a bit squirrel-ish, being a new teacher and all; the typical naive 'innocent heroine protagonist.

Her colleague steps in the class with her, where said students take an up-skirt photo of her instead 'which doesn't phase her, she teases the new teacher a bit & scolds the students while she introduces her to the class.

GTO artstyle and the "maggots that eat people and turn them into zombies" sounds like Tokko, which was broadcast on Syfy. But I don't think it has any characters or scenes like you describe in a high school, even if that scenario with the teachers sounds like something Fujisawa would write.

Not sure if it needs a thread but it's not like we're overflowing with discussion here ;), still I recently started watching the original HxH anime from 1999. I have never actually watched/read any of HxH and all I know of it was that it's permanently on hiatus, that cat girl (or boy?) that everyone posts a lot and the designs of the MC's. I decided to give it a shot for no real reason and so far I've been enjoying it.

I've watched YYH last year and enjoyed that as well. I found Season 1 of YYH to be good, 2 to be great the first half of 3 to be fantastic and then it kinda falls off after Sensui is introduced which was a shame, but it's nice to know that Togashi hasn't lost it with HxH.

I will say the first couple of episodes were...fine, I'm still not entirely sure what the plot is. Sure, Gon is trying to find his father and that's the goal but the whole idea of Hunters just seem odd. The fact Gon and that other hunter in the first episode were seen hunting animals and Gon wants to become a hunter kind of makes you think Hunter's are animal hunters, but then they add several characters who don't really fit that niche at all which makes the term "Hunter" kind of confusing. I guess it's more like a catchall term for someone who is exceptional and reliable in everything and thus the guy you go to for troubles, like an official bounty hunter or mercenary.

Character wise, I enjoy them a lot. What surprises me the most about this show was that I expected Gon to be the main part of the whole show and everyone else to sort of be secondary characters who don't really interact with one another since it's about Gon and his story, but it's actually pretty cool to see Leorio and Kurapika be together a lot and see their histories and helping each other out and such. I also like how Gon and Killua have a really normal friendship. They basically act like kids their age would act if they were friends. Which is very surprising since I thought Killua would be very stoic and not want to be friends with Gon but he opened up pretty damn quickly to him. Hell their dynamic feels like the other way around. Killua should be the MC and Gon is the friend who helps him out of his shell, but it's not like that at all.

I'm currently on episode 27 and the final part of the Hunter exam. I found the first section (running) to be a bit lacklusterPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Shameless shilling is shameless, but I have been operating an episode-by-episode 1999 Hunter x Hunter for a few months. Essentially I just slowly talk about each episode, what they do differently, and how they might contribute to 1999's overall alternative take on the material.

I've made a few interesting discoveries while doing this- primarily in contrasting how Gon and Killua get characterized here in comparison to the manga, but also getting way more information on the alt ending that even more dedicated Japanese fans didn't know (entirely thanks to making a thread about it at the right time on 4/a/).

Nen is complicated to understand in both versions. But at least in 1999 you don't see a bunch of badly made censorship. Although the main reason why 1999's better is just the great amount of love put into every episode. Is a great ride from start to finish.

Its been years since I watched HxH 99. I've been meaning to do a rewatch one of these days since its a genuinely good show, adaptation, and directed by the great Kazuhiro Furuhashi.

Gonna reply to the points I find interesting so bear with me lol.
>who don't really fit that niche at all which makes the term "Hunter" kind of confusing
That is part of what maks HxH great. The title of "hunter" can mean anything and so allows Togashi to explore a variety of genres and settings. Hunters aren't constraint by expectations like other archetypes are like pirates or ninjas.
>and thus the guy you go to for troubles, like an official bounty hunter or mercenary.
That is one of many types of Hunters, yeah. In fact, I believe Togashi was partially inspired by the video game series Arc the Lad when it came to the conception of the manga since ideas and characters like Hunters, mode of transport and even Gon's father all look lifted straight out of Arc the Lad.
>What surprises me the most about this show was that I expected Gon to be the main part of the whole show
Yep, that is another great quality of HxH. The world isn't centered around the protagonist. Characters can and will interact heavily with each other and have a significant influence on the plot with or without Gon. He is only one kid after all. I also view Gon more like vehicle to see the world and characters from his perspective since I often find the seconary characters to be more interesting and better written. Not that its a bad thing, Gon is a very good shonen protagonist all things considered.
>and not want to be friends with Gon but he opened up pretty damn quickly to him.
The 1999 show actually somewhat changes their interaction. In the manga, it was Killua who introduces himself to Gon and seeks friendship since that is whole character early on, wanting to bond with others. Meanehile 1999 changes it to having Gon introducing himself to Killua. Its not really "bad" but I do prefer how the manga does it since lets Killua be more proactive.
>The fourth section (battleship) was also REALLY good,
Its basically an anime exclusive filler arc but a damn good one, especially since it gives the later phase more tension.

Does "Obscure Cel Anime" even exist anymore? I feel like I've seen everything.

 No.3419

There's thousands upon thousands of tv specials, films, OVA, etc from 1970-2001. Unless you are very specifically obsessively collecting these rips and watching all of them then, no, it's not possible. There were so many thousands of OVA especially and most of them are forgotten about.

A lot never even got DVD releases since they are from companies that went under, or are obscure enough no one has cared enough.

Do you follow Lonelychaser, Kineko, Oprhan and others? Pretty much all of those are new to me.

I thought I knew the OVA era, but I had only seen the dozens of most notable. Truth is, most of these are pretty forgettable or cliche as well so you are not missing much. The big famous series all got DVD/BD releases, so everything else is the shit even Japan doesn't care about.

 No.3420

Idk, what's your reference frame for "obscure"? Because to the wider anime fandom, all but a few dozen titles from before 2000 are hella obscure. Uchuu Senkan Yamato ranks at #4304 most popular on MAL with 30K members, only a third of those listing it as completed. Most modern anime fans didn't know what Urusei Yatsura was before the remake.
If you're into cel anime, those are the most obvious shows in the world of course. But when was the last time you heard something about Skyers 5, Wakakusa no Charlotte, Rainbowman, Moeru Onii-san or Teki wa Kaizoku? There are a few hundred people outside of Japan who care about these titles. They're obscure, a niche within a niche within a niche. This is also reflected in how many titles remain untranslated. Having been available for decades but not having an English translation isn't exactly a sign of popularity.
And then there's the stuff that isn't even in the databases of course. People are still digging up new stuff with some regularity, be it educational anime, virtually unknown OVAs, weird local stuff, whatever. Oh, and the anime that's just lost. Most pre-1945 anime is lost forever, so those early cel works (a lot of the very early films are from before cels became standard) are forever obscured.

So yeah, most of cel anime is obscure. And even if you're in the know, there's still more obscure titles to dig into.

 No.3421

>>3420
If they haven't bothered with a modern DVD/BD release, it's probably obscure. Though there's a slow steady trickle of new BD releases of old series.

Did anyone give a shit about Kentauros no Densetsu? It's not offensive, but it's not very good either and the art and animation are ho-hum. This is very typical of these obscure OVA/Film from this era. One thing I do appreciate though, is that the subject matter seems way more varied. Oh yeah, manga about bikers and turn that into an animated film about bikers. Would anything like this get made at all? I strongly get the vibe that this was meant to be a live action film from the way the script is written and how it's directed. Probably couldn't secure funding, so a cheap animated film was made.

What the fuck are you talking about? Shows dealing with cyberpunk aesthetics and postmodernist malaise are by necessity going to be in conversation with Western ways of doing things. Their source material is overwhelmingly Western.

There was no conspiracy to shit up the cozy wap schema you have of Japan; the Y2K era had a strain of creators who were critical of the modern condition all around the world.

I strongly doubt it. Especially since there was a lot of dark stuff in the 80s with hyper violent OVAs that was reviled by a lot of westerners, especially internet critics of the 2000s. Hell look at Genocyber which was peak nihilism and postmodern critique. The same guy that did Genocyber went on to do the plot of FMA 2003 which was more nihilistic than the source material.
I think it's less to do with western influence and more a sub-sect of that Japanese generation at the time that grew disillusioned, I am not that good at Japanese Cold War history, but part of me thinks it has to do with all the wacky shit that was going on in the 60s-70s with those extreme leftist groups that were taking over schools and causing literal sieges (I think there was even one that was a literal self-hating anti-Japanese group?).
Also post-modern critique in Japan is nothing really new. So I don't really believe that either. It just so happens it more easily appeals to western tastes because westerners are a lot more cynical.

>>730
I wouldn't be so harsh, he heard it from another anon so I strongly doubt it's his own beliefs. But I can see why it would be easy to jump to that conclusion if you only looked at it superficially. If you look deeper it doesn't really add up that much honestly.

>It's as if Gonzo wanted to atone for how much they butchered Hellsing by taking a similar IP
Nah take that back. Hellsing 2001 was great.
I get it wasn't faithful, but I just found out more interesting than Hirano's original version (I like the tone, characters, writing, style and music more). Hirano's original manga felt too rushed since Hirano was just too lazy to actually write the damn story, which is part of the reason why the anime was mostly original instead of faithful.
I wish Hirano had more of an attitude like Arakawa when it came to unfaithful adaptations, I would've liked Hellsing 2001 to run for a bit longer before then having Ultimate come out much later so Hirano could've taken more time to actually finish the manga instead of rushing it in such a weird way. But nah, Hirano threw a hissy fit about 2001 and probably got any continuation shit-canned.

I can understand finding the Sketchbook manga insufferable. It's largely anti-humor, but I like it because of that. The Hidarmari Sketch manga should be ending soon in terms of chapter count but it's been 9 months since the last chapter so that slows things down a lot.

It's nice to have a situation where the most popular one is the best as well.
For Sketchbook I recall it being decent but all the cat parts being shit. For GA for reasons I can't recall it's one of my least favourite Kirara anime. I really don't know what it did wrong to make me consider it Aldnoah tier but aside from remembering a surrealist episode being decent I don't remember anything else so have to defer to a list I made 6 years ago.

For extra art girl anime if I count New Game and Stella no Mahou they'd only be behind Hidamari. If I include mangaka and potters a few extra series would join them.

Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the first volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping the one short story by Rumiko Takahashi and Mitsuru Ikegami that came out around this time called "My Sweet Sunday". Today, the scans I have of the one shot are the official VIZ ones.

End! All's well that ends well. I like this story, though I feel there could've been a bit more to it. It does touch upon how difficult it is to give advice and help people but it also shows that it is easy to misunderstand other people's situations. As such, I can't help but want a bit more from it. But life doesn't have an easy moral, I guess. Let me know what you thought of this one.

As mentioned before, I'll be back next WEDNESDAY with Volume 4 of Rin-ne.

Kanashimi No Belladonna (1973) is a masterpiece of tragic/erotic/psychedelic animation directed by Eiichi Yamamoto. Jeanne is a peasant who gets raped by a noble and becomes a witch; based on/inspired by La Sorcière by Jules Michelet, a treatise in the history of witchcraft. Noted for its experimental artstyle, bizarre visuals and its connection to Western classical art works like Klimt and the cubist movement, it's a unique piece of art with a moving narrative and breathtaking moments on screen.

>City Hunter 3's OP has her doing shit I'd LOVE to see her do in the show
Yeah, that great intro really set up something that never happened. Kind of odd how different it is from the other intros, with its narrative.

Although I don't agree that Kaori should've been using her hammer in actual fights. It belongs to the comedic sections of City Hunter, which are sharply, and loveably, divided from the serious ones. I think I can vaguely remember her trying to use it once and immediately gets dommed by a criminal, as a kind of meta joke about the hammer not actually being real. It also fits in with the hyper-masculinised men and hyper-feminised women of the 80s aesthetic. Kaori is the frail, innocent woman that needs to be saved by the strong, heroic man. In commercial American tv and film from the era this may have been vulgar and shallow, but it works in City Hunter.

>the less said about the amount of children/teens that fall for him the better. While those were some pretty funny jokes of desperately trying to not seem like a pedo, it felt like it happened WAYYYYY too often.

I think the same reason City Hunter could happily include gay people and transvestites was the same reason it could show Ryo lusting after teenage girls. It is completely without an agenda and is simply motivated by Hojo's objectivity and desire to create an entertaining world. Sometimes he uses the ridiculously masculine traits of transvestites for comic relief, another times he uses the passableness of a transvestite for comedic relief. I didn't see anything wrong with the many teen romance subplots; it is typical of Japanese culture and Ryo always ends up running away from them anyway.

 No.3378

>>3377
Yeah that's fair about Kaori. I was just trying to spitball some ideas here to make her more than what she is. She's a terrible shot with a gun from what I recall and the few times she does try and do things by herself other people have to help her and it's a real shame she can't have some moments to shine. Even a bit of luck could take her a long way with a few clients and that's pretty much all I wanted for her where she can handle herself but obviously gets overwhelmed and requires Ryo's help in the end especially near the end of the series.

As for the lolicon angle, I actually quite enjoyed those jokes. They were always pretty funny since everyone can understand *not* wanting to seem like a pedo and it's made even worse by the fact it's always the kids/teens initiating it and Ryo desperately trying to remedy the situation.

I also did find the use of gay and trans people to be surprising as well. Ryo frequents gay bars, dresses as a woman in a few episodes and jokingly convinces other people Kaori is a man much to her displeasure. It feels both progressive and mocking but I honestly liked that aspect of it. You never really knew what kind of angle each episode would take and it was always pretty funny.

I think it's interesting to see how much less annoying the audience reaction was for Star Wars. At first when I saw the Star Wars one I thought "wow, even back then the audience couldn't shut the hell up" but then I remembered watching Avengers Endgame in theaters and how the audience burst out with applause every time they saw someone enter the frame. I think that the SW one is a lot more appropriate seeing as the only parts worth putting in the video were actually important points and they stopped pretty much right when they needed to. It's not excessive so I don't think it's wrong for them to enjoy themselves. As opposed to the Avengers audience where all they needed was for Robert Downey Jr to walk on screen and they'd have a fucking meltdown. I guess that's what the movie was meant for so I shouldn't blame them, since they're only cattle responding as they're trained to, but it's still annoying.
