Or do other kinds of art, but today I'm sculpting.

My sister's birthday is coming up, and I'd like to make a lil kitsune for her garden. I tried doing a more realistic one, but realism is hard so the new goal is cute and silly. As you can see, I have a big pile of clay and have already prepared its tapered sausage body.

Heads are hard. It's funny how just a little reshaping makes it go from a duck, to a crocodile, to a shoe, just about anything but a fox. So I'll just stick it on for now and try to get it closer in a little bit. It's also funny how it's hard to find good references for this because every picture is either a foxgirl or a furry.
Also, 5 out of 9 tails have been rolled into balls, ready to shape. It's going to be interesting trying to fit all of those on.

Alright, I figured out how to manage all those tails. My first idea was to assemble them all together at once and then stick them on, but that was way too much to handle. Next I tried one at a time, but it was too cramped. Three at a time works, and they're much smaller now. I just have to finish assembling, clean up the tight spots, and then it's off to the oven.

This is a really fun thread. I don't sculpt but I'll keep my eye on this place.

are you going to paint it?

Probably just flat white with some yellow highlights, maybe a face. The main thing I want to do is a bunch of thin layers of lacquer until the surface is smooth, because the clay has a lot of fingerprints and imperfections, then cover it with paint.

I baked it as directed and it was still soft when it came out, so I threw it back in for another 30 minutes and will leave it in the oven overnight with the pilot light to keep it warm. If that fails (likely), I'll get some actual quality air-drying clay. I hope it works, but by now I've made like two or three prototypes before this one, so I'm getting used to it.

You should make a fox family

Why would you want a kitsune in your garden? Those things are scary, mischievous, and possess humans.

What kinds of sculpting material are you using?

No, kitsune are helpful! They bring good luck, and I might even get a foxgirlfriend out of it! Also, I just used Sculpey. It's the mcdonalds of clay and pretty much anything else would have been better, but it's what I wound up with.

It's in the garden, hiding in the mint. There's a few cracks and it isn't the best version of the tails, but she liked it and we were discussing what color to paint it and how. Since I still have a bunch of clay left, I might make a tengu for myself sometime.

Do you believe in kitsune?
