This may sound like a weird question to some but is there anywhere or anyone that collects, catalogs or is knowledgeable with regards to anime vhs, specifically the covers?
Sorta in the realm of the laserdisc database that catalogs them, or just in general.

To the right of the 9200 yen marker is "rental" - you can tell by these >>2732 the rental only has it beside its price.

That means "without taxes", you can see some of the other tapes list the price both without and without them. From what I gather from the written text in >>2733, it's saying that both sale and rental are allowed, but only within domestic use.

Thanks for your input.
I get the feeling 20 years ago i wouldve said or known rentals sometimes had alternate covers and cassette images but its been atleast that long since i had to even think about that.
I couldnt find anything trying to look up the catalog numbers, with laserdiscs people already went thru all the trouble of figuring that out for others looking for more info.

Self explanatory. What have you been watching, /ar/? Pic related is from the 1988 adaption of Starship Troopers. I've also been watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden and Armored Trooper VOTOMS, both of which are very good.

I finished watching Space Battleship Yamato and started Mazinger Z last night. Someone in another thread posted an image with a bunch of stuff categorised by genre and I decided to just go across the whole thing filling in the gaps in my retro anime knowledge.
SPY was pretty good! I'm not sure how I feel about Mazinger Z yet, it feels like it might be a little bit too kiddy, bit I'll stick with it for a few more episodes.

 No.2720

>>2719
Good luck, I didn't manage Mazinger Z and ended up dropping it.

 No.2724

>>2720
Thanks. I watched a few more episodes and I think that it's going to be my morning show for a while, just a couple of episodes of monster of the week stuff before watching something with more plot that I can focus on in the evening. I do like the art style of Mazinger Z though. The line art feels very rough in a way that I enjoy.

 No.2729

>>2720
I have ended up dropping it too after all. I might come back for the odd episode here and there when I'm feeling a little bit mindless, but not enough actually happens in this show to warrant watching 90 episodes of it. I got through 10 which I feel is enough to get the idea.

 No.2730

>>2729
My case was similar, I believe I watched 7 or so, then I sampled a few episodes through the whole set and found them to be too indistinct and lacking in any development at all.

There was one guy on nyaa a few years back who made two lists of 10 movies and OVAs from the 80s as sort of a "starter pack" for retro anime.
https://nyaa.si/view/1289794
https://nyaa.si/view/1267525
I've been wondering what a similar list would look like for other decades, specifically the 90's and 2000s. For the nineties I was thinking
>Cyber City Odeo 808 (90)
>Roujin Z (91)
>Shōjo Tsubaki (92)
>Porco Rosso (92)
>Ninja Scroll (93)
>Street Fighter (94)
>Memories (95)
>Perfect Blue (97)
>Ghost in the Shell (97)
>Princess Monoke (97)
>End of Evangelion (97)
>Tekken (98)
>Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade (99)
There would be 20 entries in total, ideally with at least one from each year.

I really enjoyed cyber city oedo, I'm glad to see it mentioned. For your consideration as well:

Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie (99)
Angel Cop (89 - 94)
Gunsmith Cats (95)

One of my suggestions is an extension of a TV show, another starts in the decade prior.. but this thread made me realize almost all of my favorites start in the 80s or the early 2000s!

>>2531
I will also second lodoss, there isnt a lot of quality fantasy nowadays. Its all "I'm stuck in a video game but I'm actually a god/refrigerator!?" and everything works like a video game. Even including western media and live action, fantasy as a genre doesn't seem to get much of significant quality. Most of the material in the genre that I enjoyed was written, either as a novel or as a manga. Scifi and cyberpunk stuff gets all the love, it seems.

 No.2536

File: 1709121004184.jpg (68.83 KB, 606x457, tenchi.jpg)

I would suggest adding Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki OVA 1 and 2 for '92 and '94 respectively.

 No.2722

I'm not sure if it's good to have two Ghibli movies on the list, Mononoke would be enough. If there were to be a second one, I'd at least go with Omoide Poroporo, a non-Miyazaki one. And if there will be two Oshii, Patlabor 2 might be more relevant than Jin-Roh. Also for movies that are dependent on series, like Evangelion and Sakura, I don't think they fit on the idea, since you'd have to watch the series before. I'm also unsure about the reach and relevance of some of the entries, such as Tekken, Shojo Tsubaki and Roujin Z (even more so considering Memories is already there). Here are some of my suggestions of OVAs that havern't been mentioned yet:

Otaku no Video (91)
Burn Up (91)
Video Girl Ai (92)
Aa! Megami-Sama! (93)
Taiho Shichau zo (94)
El-Hazard (95)
Gundam Dai 08 MS Shoutai (96)
Rurouni Kenshin (99)
Sakura Taisen (99)

>>2531
I think a "starter pack" isn't supposed to be obscure, it's a list of the most basic and influential, that might give a taste of what was being done at the time and serve as foundation for people to go look after what they might be interested.

 No.2725

>>2345

I just noticed you have 4 suggestions from 1997 but none from 1996.
Sonic movie and Black Jack movie both came out that year.
Might want to round out that list a bit.

 No.2726

>>2722
I mistook the Sakura Taisen OVAs here, the one I think is worth a consideration is the first one, Ōka Kenran, from 1997. Others that might also fit are the X/1999 movie and the Tetsuwan Birdy OVA, both from 1996.

Are we really supposed to believe that hardened soldiers are going to defy their superior officers, whom they've been conditioned to fear all their lives, to defect to an enemy they've been conditioned to hate all their lives, just for the sake of some shitty pop songs? That would be like the Norks or Talibans defecting to the United States in mass because of Taylor Swift. And why would anyone in that situation even give a shit about gay idol drama anyway? They're supposed to be fighting for their lives, stranded in the outer solar system millions of the nearest supply base, and yet they have not only the available resources but also the audience for this garbage?

Or that the chief archivist whose supposedly spent his entire life studying combat footage, wouldn't notice that a goddamn martial arts movie was clearly faked? Actually zentradi in general seem pretty dim, the infiltration team is able to speak perfect Japanese with no effort, but somehow remain clueless about every other aspect of Terran culture. They really should have been caught right away, especially since they acted like total buffoons and Hayase actually saw them in the miclone chambers.

The way they handle romance was also pretty dumb. At most civilian workplaces its frowned upon for officers to engage in relationships, let alone in the military. And then there's the whole romance between Max and Milia. "I tried to kill you an hour ago, let's get married!"Yeah, right.

How is this garbage considered a classic in any way? My eight year old sister could come up with a better mecha show.

The Misa Romance (before the terrible coda episodes) is the second best thing SDF Macross has going for it.
Nothing too contrived. Nice and naturalistic. A counterpoint to some of the idolshit you're crying about. Maturity is wanting to fuck your coworkers, not you idol.

Echoing this. Reinhard is space Napoleon and the Reich is the Old Regime.
Reinhard / Kircheis are also a classic Alexander / Hephaestion dynamic.

 No.1107

>>1106
Correct.
You can even pull the Alexander comparison further with how he mysteriously dies at a young age shortly after consolidating his empire, and his admirals mirroring the Diadochi (though Reinhard at least managed to get an heir so I can only assume it didn't all fall apart after the conclusion).

 No.1108

the way I see it, rudolf and reinhard represent both sides of idealist figures like hitler held. One side is textbook socialist or dictatorship that leans towards ideologies that fall under that term like fascism and use brute means like state-enforced eugenic policies that're egoist-like and come off as masquerading ethno-nationalism while the other is more amenable and meritocratic as opposed to fully nepotistic and such. The other side still has pride for it's nation but less hyper-traditionalist and more through a genuine altruistic love for it's countrymen even if policies or decisions are still expedient in some occasions (westerland massacre lol). Sort of the same contrast between wen-li's minarchist views juxtaposed with the bourgeoisie vs proletariat-oriented side of democracy. It's like a thematic hitler-like aristocracy vs a fdr-like democrstic-republic but yeah reinhard is clearly bonapartist. There are instances where he's pushed into coming off as a braunschweig-like machiavellianistic narcissist (too exaggerated I know) like vermillion and the reuenthal rebellion.

 No.2694

>>1103
Reinhard's explicitly meant to be more like Alexander and Napoleon. They take some of the cool things from Fascism but then put it into an explicitly non-Fascist context, a monarchist empire in the style of 19th century Prussia, and have Reinhard be against the Hitler figure, to make them acceptable to modern people.

I wonder whats really in the black bible. I've only seen the original OVA but I just started playing the original eroge and you get some insight into it but its like this strange remix of Christianity where Jesus uses magic and you can recite the lord's prayer to unleash sex spells on unsuspecting girls. Its funny because from what I've read that prayer is specifically used to ward off evil and protect against black magic. It makes me wonder about the sect that created this grimoire and what else might be in there or what their beliefs were. Maybe they weren't witches and are some kind of unorthodox Christian gnostic occult sect? I'll have to watch Origins sometime.

I wonder if there is a fan made version of the book out there that you can actually read? I might make a fake prop version of it for a craft project when I get the time but it looks kinda generic tbh

 No.2659[Reply]

Sup /cel/ I'm wondering if anyone knows any anime with religious themes? I don't mean anything that pushes a specific religion (although I'm not against watching that either) but anything that has a religious theme or deals with metaphysics, the occult, techno-religious imagery but not in a shallow fantasy way. e.g. where you'll have mages and priestesses but its pretty trivial and not explored with any depth or has no aesthetic relevance. Obviously, there's stuff like Evangelion, Bible Black, Osamu Tezuka's Buddha manga or garbage like Death Note. I'm also looking for stuff that relates to Japanese tradition such as the life of priests, shrine maidens, exorcists etc. It can be horror or hentai too.

Ghost Hunt is pretty fun. An ordinary schoolgirl gets inadvertently involved with a dark, brooding stranger. They fight ghosts with the help of a Catholic Priest, a buddhist Monk, a Shinto Priestess and a spirit medium. It has a cute semi-romance between the two leads and it's really satisfying to see the support characters using different techniques based on their various religions during the fights.

A favourite of mine is Digital Devil Story: Megami tensei. A high school student gets bullied and decides to write a computer program to summon a demon in order to take revenge. He also meets a girl and they happen to be reincarnations of Izanami and Izanagi and they do some really cool shit. I don't really know what's happening but it's so edgy I love it anyway. I have to read the novel version someday.

Kujakuou has a mildy distinctive aesthetic based on Vajrayana Buddhsim. The main character was raised by Shingon monks. I can't remember much about the anime but the manga description makes it sound far more interesting than I remember it being.
>Kujaku is a Buddhist monk who specialize in exorcism, devil hunting. He is a member of Ura-Kouya, a secret organization in Japan that specialize in demon hunting. In the first 3 volumes, Ogino wrote independent short stories about Kujaku's demon hunting. But in volume 4, it evolves into an epic saga against a secret evil organization lead by The Teachers of Eight Leaves. The goal of The Teachers of Eight Leaves is to revive Peacock King and Snake King, and allow them to fight each other to give birth to the ultimate Dark Buddha.
Looks like they tried to fit 17 volumes worth of material into 5 OVA episodes and it suffered for it. This is another that I'm interested in reading someday.

I have very entry-level taste in Japanimation, and I'm only really interested in horror mango. Really, my interest in both is pretty limited. I was looking to delve deeper into the work of Kazuo Umezu to see what interests me besides The Drifting Classroom and remember there being a YouTube video that went over his career, but now I can't find it. Maybe it's a good thing, since I'm running out of space for books. I guess I'll continue reading Junji Ito in the meantime.

No, I enjoy garbage, just like I enjoy badly made and ill-conceived movies. As long as they had earnest effort put into them, and are wrong in the right ways.

 No.2685

Thinking about it, there's stuff I love that'd be considered challenging, obscure and unique and also entry level anime I grew up with. It's a mixture of all kinds of stuff I have personal experiences and enjoyment with. It's really all over the place. Lately as I've gotten older I've moved more towards more challenging historically important stuff, so It's bound to get more interesting at least..

The 17th of this month marked 13 years since the passing of the legendary Osamu Dezaki.

Have any of you been watching his anime lately? I started the Treasure Island anime a few days ago and I'm really enjoying it so far. Though obviously more aimed towards kids, his expert directing as well as the impressive animation and background art make it a really great watch.

>More to point I feel like doing it the way they did actually gives it more it's own sense of legitimacy and identity rather than just making it like the old one but with a new coat of paint.
Yeah, that's true. Honestly I do think I compare this to the original too much when I should really think of it as it's own thing. While I did find their characters to be different from what we have before and thus a bad thing, I guess it's actually a good thing in the end since they are their own unique characters over being "Kei 2" and "Yuri 2".

>Plus with a lot of the story being about them needing to live up the legacy of their name does sort of paint it as having respect for the original but also wanting to be unique.
Yeah, I felt that too. I do wish it was confirmed to be the original Dirty Pair but imagining them being in their 30s or something would be quite odd (plus one would be dead and the other out for revenge).

>they wanted it to be more classic Pair but by that time Kei's actress had retired and Yuri's wasn't willing to do it "without her partner" Which is nice.
How fitting.

 No.448

Alright, so Flash 2 was better than Flash that's for sure. I found the location of 90s Tokyo to both be odd and interesting. Obviously, Dirty Pair should be set in the "anime space future" of the 80s/90s so plonking them in Tokyo 1995 just comes off as odd, but at the same time I quite liked it because I do enjoy the setting of 90s Tokyo despite it being used a lot in other anime and for Dirty Pair it's actually a new, unique location. Touma was a fun third wheel to throw into the mix, but I do wish he was utilized a bit more since he was just there for the first episode and would've been fun to see him in more dangerous situations and having to adapt to them since he's only really in one in the final episode. His character design reminded me of someone else though and I couldn't put my finger on who or from what I'm remembering his design from. Maybe Yugioh GX's professor.

As for the episodes, I both loved and somewhat disliked them to be honest. I found Flash 2 to be endearing but also very off the mark. An episode where the girls have to stay at a boarding school because there's no where else to live with a "ghost haunts the school" plot, sure that's funny and interesting I guess but that's really not what I think when I think Dirty Pair. Oh, speaking of Dirty Pair they finally said it in the show which was nice. I did enjoy the episodes overall though, even if a side of me was saying "this isn't Dirty Pair". The Touma love episode was great honestly, found it to be quite humourous and enjoyed the slice of life elements quite a bit so that was my favourite of the bunch and the episode with the con artist was great too. I found the final episode to be somewhat lackluster though, I didn't really care for the stakes and honestly forgot what they were even trying to stop and why.

They really love reminding us that Kei is a woman as well, think it's been mentioned around three to four times now. The whole transvestite part was also oddly out of the blue but still quite funny. I get it, Kei's a tomboy (hot tbh) and she hates when people think she's a man but it just seems odd to keep on mentioning it. The original Dirty Pair had around three mentions of it and an episode around the idea that Kei is mistaken for a man and it didn't come off as so "in yourPost too long.  No.449

>>448
Well, Flash 3 was fun. I say that for all of Dirty Pair but I really did just find myself chuckling or smiling at whatever stupid plot the girls have found themselves in this episode. Didn't really care for the OP and ED this time around, really liked 1 and 2's though.

Alright, the first episode was surprisingly good. I like concepts like this and this episode was surprisingly good at keeping everything suspenseful. Once again though, here's a very KEI CENTERED EPISODE which again reinforces her as the main character in my eyes. Did find it funny seeing her change a diaper then get embarrassed over the lil baby penis (pure tbh) and ending it with having to "breastfeed" the baby to avoid capture which is both dumb and somewhat smart for a person in her extreme situation. That second episode though....what an interesting one, Monica was a CCS reference, right? The entire episode was stupid but I didn't really hate it or anything, just laughed at how odd it was. The dub (which I decided to do for this episode) also made the insults a lot more funny too. That third episode was a lot of fun too, always enjoy sports anime and having a generic "HARD WORK AND GUTS" coach is quite fun, I do wish we saw some actual Volleyball instead of the training part, that episode also felt very "Flash" since I couldn't imagine the originals doing an episode like this. I liked the 4th episode as well, the kid was quite unique, can't think of another character that tried to copy a girl as a robot and love the robotic version when the real one was there the entire time, was quite humourous to see actually and I didn't expect Yuri to wear the original costume in this episode, what a nice surprise. Also, very nice to have a Yuri centered episode as well, feels like we're always with Kei. I wonder if the kid was meant to represent the fans in some way, felt like a message to them to not focus on a fake girl you've made pure in your head (Yuri) and instead go out and find a real girl. As for the final episode, it reminded me slightly of the last episode of Bubblegum Crisis which was nice, plus having a chief centered episode was nice. Always enjoy when there's some aspect like a child hostage the good guys need to deal with, although I do wish there was a bit more action.

Overall, I'd rate Flash as inferior Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

 No.450

I actually get a few of the episodes of Flash 2 and 3 mixed up order wise but I did enjoy them both. The volley ball episode being a prominent stand out, for a few reasons, but there's some good ones in there. It's a bit of a shame we didn't get anymore because I feel like they were really starting to develop their stride as they went on. Maybe see a movie or something.
