CITY HUNTER

City Hunter is the greatest anime of all time. Unknown to both waps and normies, it is only for patricians. It also has the greatest soundtrack of any anime.

WAMC April Series - Kodocha

Welcome to something new for /cel/ - the WAMC (Wapanese Anime/Manga Club). This will be a monthly series of threads focused around specific /cel/ works, with the idea that people would actually read/watch them and get a better understanding of the medium. (These will almost always be stuff that I haven't personally read/seen)

April's series is Kodocha - Miho Obana's high energy yet heartful series. I've only seen clips of this, so it'll be nice to actually sit down and give it a proper watch. The manga doesn't seem overly long which is nice.

Feel free to reply with any thoughts you have about this series!

Overrated and underrated 90s Shows

Cowboy Bebop is boring. Outlaw Star has cute girls, Taoist magic, and intergalactic space temples and better action scenes. Yet we we're deprived of a sequel! Why do people even like Cowboy Bebop so much? Its not even that good! Well okay that's just annoyingly contrarian, its a good show just not as great at the hype train makes it out to be.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is also overrated. The battle scenes are absurd. How can one man command so many vessels? It makes no sense. The average admiral can't even command one battle group properly but in LOTGH they can command hundreds of ships at once? No communications breakdown? Its like playing a crappy Paradox strategy game, having billion units, and realizing your brain doesn't have the mental processing power to manage them all but somehow they can do it. The story is Star Wars level Evil Nazi Coded Empire vs Space America. Its like choosing between slitting your throat or jumping into a fire.

Serial Experiments Lain is a great show but why isn't there more love for Texhnolyze?

Evengelion is good but overrated. Everybody knows this already. People are just mad at how popular it is.

Best /cel/ Movies/OVAS of the 1990's.

There was one guy on nyaa a few years back who made two lists of 10 movies and OVAs from the 80s as sort of a "starter pack" for retro anime.
https://nyaa.si/view/1289794
https://nyaa.si/view/1267525
I've been wondering what a similar list would look like for other decades, specifically the 90's and 2000s. For the nineties I was thinking
>Cyber City Odeo 808 (90)
>Roujin Z (91)
>Shōjo Tsubaki (92)
>Porco Rosso (92)
>Ninja Scroll (93)
>Street Fighter (94)
>Memories (95)
>Perfect Blue (97)
>Ghost in the Shell (97)
>Princess Monoke (97)
>End of Evangelion (97)
>Tekken (98)
>Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade (99)
There would be 20 entries in total, ideally with at least one from each year.

Macross is fucking stupid

Are we really supposed to believe that hardened soldiers are going to defy their superior officers, whom they've been conditioned to fear all their lives, to defect to an enemy they've been conditioned to hate all their lives, just for the sake of some shitty pop songs? That would be like the Norks or Talibans defecting to the United States in mass because of Taylor Swift. And why would anyone in that situation even give a shit about gay idol drama anyway? They're supposed to be fighting for their lives, stranded in the outer solar system millions of the nearest supply base, and yet they have not only the available resources but also the audience for this garbage?

Or that the chief archivist whose supposedly spent his entire life studying combat footage, wouldn't notice that a goddamn martial arts movie was clearly faked? Actually zentradi in general seem pretty dim, the infiltration team is able to speak perfect Japanese with no effort, but somehow remain clueless about every other aspect of Terran culture. They really should have been caught right away, especially since they acted like total buffoons and Hayase actually saw them in the miclone chambers.

The way they handle romance was also pretty dumb. At most civilian workplaces its frowned upon for officers to engage in relationships, let alone in the military. And then there's the whole romance between Max and Milia. "I tried to kill you an hour ago, let's get married!"Yeah, right.

How is this garbage considered a classic in any way? My eight year old sister could come up with a better mecha show.

Anime with religious themes

Sup /cel/ I'm wondering if anyone knows any anime with religious themes? I don't mean anything that pushes a specific religion (although I'm not against watching that either) but anything that has a religious theme or deals with metaphysics, the occult, techno-religious imagery but not in a shallow fantasy way. e.g. where you'll have mages and priestesses but its pretty trivial and not explored with any depth or has no aesthetic relevance. Obviously, there's stuff like Evangelion, Bible Black, Osamu Tezuka's Buddha manga or garbage like Death Note. I'm also looking for stuff that relates to Japanese tradition such as the life of priests, shrine maidens, exorcists etc. It can be horror or hentai too.

Favourite /ar/ anime.

What's your absolute favourite /ar/ anime, and why?

For me, it's Irresponsible Captain Tylor. I remember watching the first episode back in 2017 and finding it to be somewhat uneventful, and it wasn't until the fourth episode where the crescendo made me laugh for a solid ten seconds that I fell in love with it.

I found the anime to be incredibly hilarious and it had that charm of not knowing how the characters were going to get out of an impossible situation and then seeing them get out of it flawlessly. I do think it suffers from a few slow moments, some out of character moments for Tylor and a very lackluster, confusing final fight. I wanted to see Tylor and the crew get out of impossible battle situations and he's only in four in the entire anime, I get not wanting to make an anime that's all about winning impossible situations but I just wish there was more.

The crew are fantastic as well, great characters all round. The Mad Max style soldiers who are so stupidly dressed for their jobs, the android spy sent to kill Tylor who everyone falls in love with and even Yamamoto and Yuriko who are pretty normal by comparison are still great for being straight men to Tylor's idiotic ideas and escapades. As for the enemy alien army, there aren't that many but I did find the two main ones Azalyn and Dom to be pretty fun, although I did find Azalyn's obsession over Tylor a bit of a meh plot point since it doesn't really go anywhere.

This was probably the first anime where I saw my favourite trope of "underestimated lucky idiot" being put into full effect and I noticed that I LOVE that kind of trope. I saw it a few times in things like Ace Attorney and Index, but never pieced it together until this show. Worst part is, I've never seen another anime really do it again, although Golden Boy was close.

Surprisingly, I've never seen the OVA's despite this being my favourite anime. For some reason I just never had the drive to do it despite having no reason not to. I'll have to figure out a good time to watch them. I also kind of want to read the entire Japanese wikipedia page for Tylor since it seems to have the ENTIRE light novel up there but only in Japanese which I learnt from a quick google translate skim has Tylor be a 30 year old pedophile who is also sent back in time to WW2 to command the Yamato in one of the novels which sounds hilarious.

Dezaki

Thread dedicated to the great Osamu Dezaki.

Starting his career notably as an animator for Astro Boy, Dezaki made his claim after directing the Ashita no Joe anime. In it he defined much of what would become his signature style, which he would continue to develop throughout his future works. Many aspects of his style became defining tropes of anime. For example, his famous freeze frame technique, known as a postcard memory (pics related) has become a staple of anime. If you want more examples of tropes he started I recommend watching Ashita no Joe.

IPs he has directed include: Golgo 13, Black Jack, Space Cobra, Lupin III, Aim for the Ace, Moomin, The Roses of Versailles, and more. Without Dezaki the golden age of anime, that this board relates to, would not have existed as it did.

Old Japanese Web Pages

Education resource thread

This is a thread to provide resources for anons to educate themselves on the history, production process, and common critical language of anime and manga (I am less educated on manga personally, so my recommendations will be anime focused).

Here is a useful article that is a great overview on anime as an artform, how it got to be the way it is, and what distinguishes it from cartoons: https://www.tofugu.com/japan/anime-vs-cartoons/

The Dragonball fandom has an excellent series of articles about the production process of your average television anime (both the retro and digital workflows are explained), as well as a map of all of the staff and what they do:
https://www.kanzenshuu.com/animation-production/process/
https://www.kanzenshuu.com/animation-production/positions-and-roles/

Here is another article that helps establish a baseline knowledge for talking about animation quality, or more specifically some pitfalls to avoid when discussing it:
https://www.kanzenshuu.com/animation-production/quality/

For those who want a much more in depth and technical book on an academic study of anime as an artform, there are several books I could recommend, but by far I find this the most useful: https://film7000.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/thomaslamarre-2009-theanimemachine.pdf

Finally if you'd like some insight into the history of the American anime community, this is a great book:
https://u1lib.org/book/5612293/e70b96

Feel free to share your own resources if you have any, the more educated the community, the more we can appreciate what we love!

List of Mandatory Classic Movies

Kanashimi No Belladonna (1973) is a masterpiece of tragic/erotic/psychedelic animation directed by Eiichi Yamamoto. Jeanne is a peasant who gets raped by a noble and becomes a witch; based on/inspired by La Sorcière by Jules Michelet, a treatise in the history of witchcraft. Noted for its experimental artstyle, bizarre visuals and its connection to Western classical art works like Klimt and the cubist movement, it's a unique piece of art with a moving narrative and breathtaking moments on screen.

HxH 1999

Not sure if it needs a thread but it's not like we're overflowing with discussion here ;), still I recently started watching the original HxH anime from 1999. I have never actually watched/read any of HxH and all I know of it was that it's permanently on hiatus, that cat girl (or boy?) that everyone posts a lot and the designs of the MC's. I decided to give it a shot for no real reason and so far I've been enjoying it.

I've watched YYH last year and enjoyed that as well. I found Season 1 of YYH to be good, 2 to be great the first half of 3 to be fantastic and then it kinda falls off after Sensui is introduced which was a shame, but it's nice to know that Togashi hasn't lost it with HxH.

I will say the first couple of episodes were...fine, I'm still not entirely sure what the plot is. Sure, Gon is trying to find his father and that's the goal but the whole idea of Hunters just seem odd. The fact Gon and that other hunter in the first episode were seen hunting animals and Gon wants to become a hunter kind of makes you think Hunter's are animal hunters, but then they add several characters who don't really fit that niche at all which makes the term "Hunter" kind of confusing. I guess it's more like a catchall term for someone who is exceptional and reliable in everything and thus the guy you go to for troubles, like an official bounty hunter or mercenary.

Character wise, I enjoy them a lot. What surprises me the most about this show was that I expected Gon to be the main part of the whole show and everyone else to sort of be secondary characters who don't really interact with one another since it's about Gon and his story, but it's actually pretty cool to see Leorio and Kurapika be together a lot and see their histories and helping each other out and such. I also like how Gon and Killua have a really normal friendship. They basically act like kids their age would act if they were friends. Which is very surprising since I thought Killua would be very stoic and not want to be friends with Gon but he opened up pretty damn quickly to him. Hell their dynamic feels like the other way around. Killua should be the MC and Gon is the friend who helps him out of his shell, but it's not like that at all.

I'm currently on episode 27 and the final part of the Hunter exam. I found the first section (running) to be a bit lackluster and the second section (cooking) to be worse, but it REALLY picked up by the third section (trick tower) which I wished was longer and had them dealing with more psychological aspects over just fights, plus that 50 hour wait in the room could've been a really fun filler episode. The fourth section (battleship) was also REALLY good, a tough situation and a time limit where everyone had to work together felt really engaging to watch, especially with how it ended. The fifth section (badge hunting) was also quite engaging, giving Gon the task of grabbing Hisoka's badge was great even if we spent around two episodes watching him train and stalk him. A shame Ponzu didn't stick around, I liked her.

I still have no idea what this series is even going to be about, sure Gon finding his dad, Kurapika getting revenge(?), Leorio becoming a doctor and Killua having...fun? I'm sure Hisoka is going to throw multiple wrenches in their plans but otherwise it's quite refreshing to not really know where this is going (although I have been spoiled on how Gon's arc ends).

Anyhow, it probably didn't need a thread but I wanted to throw my thoughts out onto the board. Will probably update it in a few days when I'm nearing the end. Watching 4 episodes a day is fun when the show is actually quite good, as opposed to trudging my way through it like I did for other longer shows.

Shuffle

I've been watching this 2005 VN adaptation classic. Outside of the gimmick of the three dimensions coming together, which gives us some demon and god girls, it plays the harem tropes really straight, it probably invented some of them, but it manages to land it all well enough and not feel tired. That's something I've noticed about trend setting shows, even if a ton of shows copy them later the originals still manage to feel fresh. Sometimes the female characters in these shows can come off as way too big of doormats or cute/silly to the point of being awkward to me, especially in Key adaptations, but this manages to not take things too far in that regard. Not sure who best girl is yet.

The art is generally pretty to look at. This era of anime design kind of resembles some of the appeal of those simple early 80s TV designs you would see in comedy shows like Sasuga Sarutobi or Urusei Yatsura, likely incredibly fun for the animators to draw and well suited for expressive motion in their simplicity. Which isn't quite lived up to here, unfortunately. The drawings are strong, and the motion is fine, but I would have hoped for more in the way of stand out charismatic character acting or something a bit more interesting in the odd action scenes that come up. There was a really nice rotation in episode 6 that caught my eye, but I think a bit more on the animation front would have elevated the show.

The storyboards are strong most of the time .Naoyuki Kuzuya impressed me the most with his boards on episode 5, he had been active since the late 80s, and the veteran touches are very visible, lots of nice deep staging and good angles. The show also has a signature style of cut ins that are color coded for specific girls, which is a touch I always love, either in a restrained manner like this or the kind of wild stuff directors like Tomino do.

I don't know if there are any Shuffle fans here, but who is best girl? Is the show going to surprise me? (though don't spoil it). Any other similar mid 00 Harems at a similar level of quality that don't get spoken of enough. I know this one was popular back in the day, but it seems to have faded into obscurity since then.

Royal Space Force Theatrical Showings

So earlier today I was looking up if there was any news on Uru in Blue (hah, no), and found an article from August which mentioned that not only was Royal Space Force getting a 4K 35mm scan released on bluray soon, but that it would also have a theatrical re-release to coincide with this. I looked it up and the bluray is coming out on the 4th of November, but I can't find any more recent sources giving a date or locations for any screenings.

Anyone have any more info? I'd really love to see this masterpiece on the big screen and I don't want to miss what's likely my only chance.

So I know the 20th Century in general is the gud shit, but I argue that the '90s, (or rather, from about 1988 onwards), was the absolute best, in terms of animation quality and good draftmanship, as well as actual directing, creating atmosphere and unique imagery. All those little special effects were great too-The glistening, the glowing, the blurry scenes, heat waves etc.

The 70s and 80s were good, but to me it felt sort of like the animators and director and writers etc were still establishing themselves. The 90s is when they found their feet and took off running in practically every aspect.

I think this era ended in around 2003,and I'm not sure why, maybe digital was just hard to get used to-- but I read somewhere that in the late '90s and early '00s there was a sort of "anime brain drain"-- that is, a lot of older greats left the industry, and the new young talent had a lack of mentorship.Of course there was also increased appeal to otaku and probably some budget issues.

Rose Of Versailles

I've been watching this anime.
So far it's a simple but well done story.
Due it's age it lacks in animation sequences, but it more than makes up for it with Dezaki's great directing.
And the artstyle is really charming.

Retro Anime that you want to see subbed.

Self explanatory. For me it would be three late 80s Studio Comet produced TV shows all with Hirosho Kanazawa as character designer and heavily involved as an animation director. I believe all three are manga adaptations, and they all have the similar kind of pudgy faced caricatured character designs that are really unique. High School Kimengumi, Tsuide ni Tonchinkan and Meimon! Daisan Yakyuubu. The latter two I watched raw, with Tsuide ( screenshots shown here) being a well executed slapstick comedy, albeit a bit repetitive. Meimon is an incredibly well done sports drama with storyboards that feel somewhat reminiscent of Dezaki, as it was his student, Hiroshi Fukutomi who directed it. The animation quality was outstandingly good and consistent, full of subtle weighty convincing motion during the baseball games. Kimengumi has its movie subbed and I enjoyed it, but the series has yet to be picked up.

Helping anons remember anime

Feel free to delete if this thread is too specific but I think it might be nice to have a thread where anons help each other identify anime that they only hazily remember but still want to watch.

I say this might be nice because I'm currently having this very issue. It's a one or two episode Girls with Guns OVA from the 90s, not Gunsmith Cats but sort of like it, maybe a bit more scifi? It had "Uta" in the name. It didn't seem super well known but it looked right up my alley, I jist forgot to write the name down. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Anime OPs

Hit a huge milestone in my quest to watch every anime opening ever. I finished the 20th Century!

I started with only caring about TV openings, but realizing that my experience would neglect classics like "Gunbuster" or "Dirty Pair Project Eden" I expanded it to cover all anime. That means I've checked out everything, TV, OVA, Hentai, Specials, OVAs, and Music Videos (Exceptions would be lost anime or anime not listed in the MAL database.)

Along the way, I curated a list of what I consider to be notable anime OPs. I've separated the notably good and the notably bad apart from each other (unremarkable openings are off the list). This list is raw and unorganized (only by year and only at a first impression). I figured you guys might want to see it.

Any suggestions of a better way I could present the data would be appreciated.

What are your favorite retro anime openings?

Nexus clash

Game Link: https://nexusclash.com/clash.php

Have you heard of Nexus Clash? I've been playing it for around a month and it's fun. It's essentially a free to play text browser based PvP MMO that you can play in any browser. Think something like Urban Dead except it's a fantasy game.

It's got a deep class system based on morality (evil, good or neutral) where you can become an angel, a demon or a superhuman based on what alignment you are. Some classes such as lich (a neutral mage class) allows you to build undead armies from players you have killed, while others such as corrupters (evil class) can corrupt players or players minions and pets. There's a plethora of classes such as revenant (basically a creature of the night, have skills that allow you to track players who have killed you or people you know, or eternal soldiers - masters of any sort of human combat be it guns, hand to hand or melee, to archangels - high ranking angels that can command other angels to some degree. (Here is a list of all the classes. https://wiki.nexusclash.com/wiki/Classes )

A big thing is after a few years one side of the game (either evil,Neutral or good) wins the game and the game resets with the winning side helping to structure the new game map.

If you do play, I highly suggest reading a new player guide

Why did older forms of animation die off anyways?

It's just weird to me, like, if you look at any anime prior to 1990 you will see a clear difference in art style. The anime of the time is less jagged and more rounded and bubbly as opposed to modern anime which isn't. I'm just curious as to why that is. When exactly did this shift away from the softer less pointed animation begin and why?

wapTV - coming soon!

Yes, the weekly stream idea is real, and it's going to start up within the week. I am thinking of running the streams biweekly on tuesdays and thursdays (unless other days work better, but i'd like to keep it during the week)
The idea is that each day would have an episode from two series during the same season. Here's what i'm thinking of starting with
>Tuesday: Fall 1982
Space Cobra
Tokimeki Tonight
>Thursday: Spring 1983
Aishite Knight
Miyuki

This would all be taken care of by a bot (finally got one working), so I won't have to micromanage everything. Times are probably going to be 17:00 UTC since thats the time that presumably works for the most people.
(Another idea - doing rebroadcasts at a few common local times during the day such as noon in PST, EST, and CET)

(With an episode a week, these would take many months to get through a whole series, so I may do two episodes of each in a block if people would prefer that)

Night on the Galactic Railroad

Please, someone help me understand the appeal of this movie. I love the idea of it and the artwork is really nice, but the pacing is just... there's no reason for the movie to be as long and as slow as it is. I'm not against films having a slower, more meditative or dreamlike pace, but Railroad drags everything out for as long as possible, well past the point of interest.

I'm really not trying to shit on this film, I understand it means a lot to many people and I respect that. I'm trying to understand and maybe come to appreciate it myself. If anyone who really likes this movie could explain to me why they do, I would really appreciate it.

Historical Anime

Often overlooked, I think there's a lot of good retro anime based on historical events that get often overlooked. Let's have a thread about them.

Many classic anime have been re-released, re-scanned, re-mastered, and re-edited countless times. This is a thread where you can post about differences between versions of any anime, from shitty upscales and botched crops, to alternate scenes, animation, and extended cuts. Try to avoid spoilers, so that if someone checks the thread for the “definitive” version of whatever they’re trying to watch they don’t get spoiled.

The first wapchan watch p/ar/ty suggestion thread!

To keep discussion on here fresh and to get a broader perspective on retro anime, I'll be hosting monthly watch p/ar/ties on cytube. I'm planning on this first one being held on the 29nd at 15:00 UTC, which hopefully works for most wapnons, and will run from 4-6 hours in total. This thread is for submitting suggestions for the stream. Less well known or obscure suggestions would be appreciated as I know there are a lot of works people want to discuss but few have actually seen.
