Welcome to something new for /cel/ - the WAMC (Wapanese Anime/Manga Club). This will be a monthly series of threads focused around specific /cel/ works, with the idea that people would actually read/watch them and get a better understanding of the medium. hi all,Classic Dragon Ball
https://yewtu.be/watch?v=GJ3aTmlLkv8Overrated and underrated 90s Shows
Cowboy Bebop is boring. Outlaw Star has cute girls, Taoist magic, and intergalactic space temples and better action scenes. Yet we we're deprived of a sequel! Why do people even like Cowboy Bebop so much? Its not even that good! Well okay that's just annoyingly contrarian, its a good show just not as great at the hype train makes it out to be.Classic anime music
Let's have a thread for pre-2000s anime music that you enjoy a lot.Is Hajime no Ippo a rip off?

There was one guy on nyaa a few years back who made two lists of 10 movies and OVAs from the 80s as sort of a "starter pack" for retro anime.Macross is fucking stupid
Are we really supposed to believe that hardened soldiers are going to defy their superior officers, whom they've been conditioned to fear all their lives, to defect to an enemy they've been conditioned to hate all their lives, just for the sake of some shitty pop songs? That would be like the Norks or Talibans defecting to the United States in mass because of Taylor Swift. And why would anyone in that situation even give a shit about gay idol drama anyway? They're supposed to be fighting for their lives, stranded in the outer solar system millions of the nearest supply base, and yet they have not only the available resources but also the audience for this garbage?Anime with religious themes
Sup /cel/ I'm wondering if anyone knows any anime with religious themes? I don't mean anything that pushes a specific religion (although I'm not against watching that either) but anything that has a religious theme or deals with metaphysics, the occult, techno-religious imagery but not in a shallow fantasy way. e.g. where you'll have mages and priestesses but its pretty trivial and not explored with any depth or has no aesthetic relevance. Obviously, there's stuff like Evangelion, Bible Black, Osamu Tezuka's Buddha manga or garbage like Death Note. I'm also looking for stuff that relates to Japanese tradition such as the life of priests, shrine maidens, exorcists etc. It can be horror or hentai too.Osamu Dezaki thread
The 17th of this month marked 13 years since the passing of the legendary Osamu Dezaki.Favourite /ar/ anime.
What's your absolute favourite /ar/ anime, and why?60s-early 70s shoujo
Morbid curiosity told me to look at this era of shoujo anime, so I started with Sasurai no Taiyou; it's not terrible even if hammier than I expected after a diet of 2000s stuff. I tried to sketch some of the character expressions in a sketchbook but it didn't come out great. Any other shoujo recommendations from this era I should check out?Dezaki

It's time to play the retro otaku famous sport, finding old Japanese web pages! Now these days, various search engines have been filtering these pages, making them harder to find, but if you know a thing or two about old anime/doujin circles, this shouldn't be a challenge for /ar/.Leiji Matsumoto thread
No Matsumoto thread? Sad.Education resource thread
This is a thread to provide resources for anons to educate themselves on the history, production process, and common critical language of anime and manga (I am less educated on manga personally, so my recommendations will be anime focused).List of Mandatory Classic Movies
Kanashimi No Belladonna (1973) is a masterpiece of tragic/erotic/psychedelic animation directed by Eiichi Yamamoto. Jeanne is a peasant who gets raped by a noble and becomes a witch; based on/inspired by La Sorcière by Jules Michelet, a treatise in the history of witchcraft. Noted for its experimental artstyle, bizarre visuals and its connection to Western classical art works like Klimt and the cubist movement, it's a unique piece of art with a moving narrative and breathtaking moments on screen.HxH 1999
Not sure if it needs a thread but it's not like we're overflowing with discussion here ;), still I recently started watching the original HxH anime from 1999. I have never actually watched/read any of HxH and all I know of it was that it's permanently on hiatus, that cat girl (or boy?) that everyone posts a lot and the designs of the MC's. I decided to give it a shot for no real reason and so far I've been enjoying it.Shuffle
I've been watching this 2005 VN adaptation classic. Outside of the gimmick of the three dimensions coming together, which gives us some demon and god girls, it plays the harem tropes really straight, it probably invented some of them, but it manages to land it all well enough and not feel tired. That's something I've noticed about trend setting shows, even if a ton of shows copy them later the originals still manage to feel fresh. Sometimes the female characters in these shows can come off as way too big of doormats or cute/silly to the point of being awkward to me, especially in Key adaptations, but this manages to not take things too far in that regard. Not sure who best girl is yet.Royal Space Force Theatrical Showings
So earlier today I was looking up if there was any news on Uru in Blue (hah, no), and found an article from August which mentioned that not only was Royal Space Force getting a 4K 35mm scan released on bluray soon, but that it would also have a theatrical re-release to coincide with this. I looked it up and the bluray is coming out on the 4th of November, but I can't find any more recent sources giving a date or locations for any screenings.Ideas thread
This is just to collect ideas from the community.Retro Anime that you want to see subbed.
Self explanatory. For me it would be three late 80s Studio Comet produced TV shows all with Hirosho Kanazawa as character designer and heavily involved as an animation director. I believe all three are manga adaptations, and they all have the similar kind of pudgy faced caricatured character designs that are really unique. High School Kimengumi, Tsuide ni Tonchinkan and Meimon! Daisan Yakyuubu. The latter two I watched raw, with Tsuide ( screenshots shown here) being a well executed slapstick comedy, albeit a bit repetitive. Meimon is an incredibly well done sports drama with storyboards that feel somewhat reminiscent of Dezaki, as it was his student, Hiroshi Fukutomi who directed it. The animation quality was outstandingly good and consistent, full of subtle weighty convincing motion during the baseball games. Kimengumi has its movie subbed and I enjoyed it, but the series has yet to be picked up.Helping anons remember anime

It's just weird to me, like, if you look at any anime prior to 1990 you will see a clear difference in art style. The anime of the time is less jagged and more rounded and bubbly as opposed to modern anime which isn't. I'm just curious as to why that is. When exactly did this shift away from the softer less pointed animation begin and why?wapTV - coming soon!

Please, someone help me understand the appeal of this movie. I love the idea of it and the artwork is really nice, but the pacing is just... there's no reason for the movie to be as long and as slow as it is. I'm not against films having a slower, more meditative or dreamlike pace, but Railroad drags everything out for as long as possible, well past the point of interest.old otaku documentaries/news coverage

Often overlooked, I think there's a lot of good retro anime based on historical events that get often overlooked. Let's have a thread about them./av/ - Alternate Versions
Many classic anime have been re-released, re-scanned, re-mastered, and re-edited countless times. This is a thread where you can post about differences between versions of any anime, from shitty upscales and botched crops, to alternate scenes, animation, and extended cuts. Try to avoid spoilers, so that if someone checks the thread for the “definitive” version of whatever they’re trying to watch they don’t get spoiled. The first wapchan watch p/ar/ty suggestion thread!
To keep discussion on here fresh and to get a broader perspective on retro anime, I'll be hosting monthly watch p/ar/ties on cytube. I'm planning on this first one being held on the 29nd at 15:00 UTC, which hopefully works for most wapnons, and will run from 4-6 hours in total. This thread is for submitting suggestions for the stream. Less well known or obscure suggestions would be appreciated as I know there are a lot of works people want to discuss but few have actually seen.Anime Night with friends
