I've been thinking about the rules the Haibane are supposed to live by. What do all these rules share? They are all things you either must do or are not supposed to do with your body. We generally don't think about our bodies that much but its pretty clear that even simple ways of sitting, standing, and walking are learned and become a habit to the point we don't even think about them. Many societies have developed sophisticated techniques of the body e.g. yoga, Taoist sex practices, Buddhist vinaya or even mundane things like boxing, wrestling etc. but for us this has become a faded concept, besides sport. We're generally told that (as long as we don't break the law) it doesn't matter what we do with our bodies, we can be good people despite how we dress, eat, who we sleep with. Techniques of the body aren't aimless. They are meant to achieve something e.g. escape from the cycle of rebirth or becoming a champion athlete. I wonder what the purpose is for the Haibane? It can't just be the day of flight. I guess its also an attitude to life? An emotional state?

Part of me wants to try living by Haibane rules to see what it does to you. I can't exactly work for free and not handle money and the walls rule doesn't apply so maybe its a bit of a pointless exercise? There are abandoned buildings nearby and I can go to thrift stores for clothes, but obviously the walls thing doesn't apply and there's no way I can just work for free and not handle any money so maybe its a pointless exercise?

This is too much for somebody who's never studied philosophy. I can't wrap my mind around it at all, unfortunately.

 No.524

What I do wonder about though is the story of the girl who tried her best to repair the clock. She clicked me the most of all.

 No.525

Haibane Renmei isn't that deep really. Its just a nice show.

 No.526

Nice? It's probably in top 10 if not in top 5 anime in its atmospheric niche. The only other I can name without thinking is Mushishi, though I am certain I saw at least one or two more that would qualify. Probably Girls' Last Tour among them..? My memory is a mess.

I didn't mean to be dismissive. Its one of the best things I've ever seen.

What's the consensus on the steins;gate anime? I played the visual novel on ps vita many years ago and really enjoyed it but I'm not sure I have it in me to do the whole VN again. Is the anime a worthy adaptation?
Also are there any shows that capture the same vibe as the novel that you'd recommend? Are the other games in this series good?

 No.402

I can't tell you what the consensus was since for the life of me I've never actually talked about Steins;Gate before, but the anime is worth watching if you played the VN before. It is a VN adaptation so it won't match up to the VN 100% like every other adaptation, but it is still watchable on its own. Biggest problems I had with it were with the pacing of the anime over the VN, but if you want to watch the anime give it a shot.

If it has been a while since you read it the anime should be a good way to see it again. I'd count it as a great adaptation.
As for the rest you should play the 0 VN and then pretend it never got an anime. I'd count the VN as nearly as good as the original and the anime as among the worst adaptations I've seen and I'm generally not that harsh on them. I didn't even think the Urasekai adaptation was that bad.

 No.404

I never played the VN but as someone who doesn't often rewatch anime, I always make sure to watch it again at least once a year. One of my favorites for sure

 No.405

It's good, especially if you have a familiarity with the story already, but it does its own thing obviously so don't go into it expecting a 1:1 adaption. The creators of the anime took creative liberties to adapt it their way and I think it's a good watch.

 No.516

anime isnt nearly as good in my opinion
the VN just hits harder

I'm sure you've all heard the news - Osaka (Ayumu Kasuga) is going to be in the next Yotsuba&! chapter after an over two decade absence. Since Kiyohiko Azuma's works are so fundamental to western imageboard culture, I proclaim this "Osaka Week"!
Users are encouraged to post Osaka anywhere and everywhere!
Also, I'll be running a Azumanga Daioh marathon this Saturday starting at 12PM EST, including a bunch of (sfw) doujin Azumanga games!

I thought it was awful coincidental that the most relevant character to the Western fandom (particularly those who frequent anime centric websites) would be the one who had the cameo. I would have expected Sakaki or Chiyo, since they were the most prominent characters in the actual series. (They may have already had cameos; I've never read Yotsuba&!) I wonder if the Japanese see Osaka the way many of us see her and that inspired the decision. Or maybe the mangaka sees her as we do! It's all speculation.
>>504
Thank you for the Osaka week, Figamin.

Taking a shot in the dark here to see if anybody might be able to lead me in the right direction.
Im trying to find complete raw in any video format of the original broadcast version of the Hellsing TV anime. If you are not familiar with what that is the show originally had many scenes redone for what i guess was more "consistentcy" after it aired and for home release. This isnt about what is better just interested in something complete to watch.
I found a few random episodes here and there but not the whole show complete or unsubbed/dubbed.
Obviously some sub groups back in the day had them for their uploads but those groups are all dead and gone, nyaa doesnt seem to have it and all the resources i use to look for older stuff has dried up.

For some reason now the reply counter hangs at 100% and never fully posts while im here. I see they are going thru when i come back to check later but not while im browsing the site. I was posting fine before the site update.

So, after mucho searching and trials i can say that these broadcast episodes were not on any of the earliest NTSC region 1 DVD releases.
Ive seen a few claims these were on DVD but not one person actually backing those claims up.
The earliest DVD release i can find dates for are the Rescripts VHSs and DVDs which came out a week or so after the show ended its original broadcast(release date for Rescript 1 is 1/25/2002), the earliest DVD releases america got was in june of 2002 and they arent on any of those.
I dont know the dates other distributors for other countries got(selecta-vision, madman, ect.) but i doubt they were earlier than the Rescripts.

And to think that bacl in the day this was considered the bare minimum in order to achieve publisher status, today's anime are all cookie cutter Isekai shit "i reincarnated into…" made with the only goal of being escapist slop, today's anime industry needs to fail so much that it gets kicked out of mainstream status and only there we will be able to see something worthy.

Okitsura: Fell in Love with an Okinawan Girl, but I Just Wish I Knew What She's Saying
The first episode had great animation, was a lot of fun, and had some nice Okinawan cultural tidbits! Check it out and post cute Okinawans!
(Would a thread for the currently airing season be a good idea?)

Hunter x Hunter is the poster child for what is wrong with the publisher sphere, I understand that there are problems but at this point wouldn't it better if He left the work to his assistant and limit Himself to a management role rather than a drawing one? It would be the best solution for everyone.

I started watching this the other day. I was curious if it was just nostalgia for a lame girls' show, or if it was any good.
I'm enjoying it. I'm the simple sort of person that just wants to know what's next, so the monster of the week format is fine with me.
Sakura is cute. The cards are cool. Tomoyo isn't that interesting to me, but she's extremely similar to Kozue from the 2003 VN "Snow Sakura". It isn't surprising, but it was just kind of neat to see what might be the source of inspiration for the character.

This may not fit on the board, but is the 2018 sequel any good? I've just finished the entire series + the movies and liked it, although I'm skeptical a modern sequel to an /ar/ anime would be any good
