This board has been requested for ages. Now with the site move complete, it makes sense to try it out (especially since /kind/ and /media/ have become soft modern anime boards). Post 2010 only, and global rules apply.

That's why slow boards are so good. Kids stay on nashi and don't get on your nerves.

You better post something good then, or then that pride would be meaningless.

 No.394

Hello,
I'm thinking of folding this board into /digi/ for now, since the "strictly 2000s" community seems to be really niche at the moment. If there are no objections this will be done tonight.

I feel like this board has always been under the radar compared to the other boards on here. Any of you have ideas on how to increase activity?

 No.313

Honestly, I forget it exists. I usually use the overboard and pick and choose which thread to post in. Sometimes I post 2000s stuff on cel without really thinking about it.

>>309
This might be a good idea, and to stop people talking about currently airing thing you could push that to a single thread if they wanted it. So the board is mostly pre-2000s, scatterings of 2000s threads and one thread of 2010s onwards

Starting threads about anime made in this time period would help. Most people are reactionary and you wont get much activity waiting for others to get the ball rolling and show interest.

>>309

Then you just have /a/ which already exists and you will have the same problem you started with.

Maybe change the font to something that not complete pain to look at? Seriously I can't read anything here for more than 2 minutes.

Or, Kiyohiko Azuma & Keiichi Arawi - mangakas who the best SoL/CGDCT stories. Unlike a lot of modern, seasonal anime - these two shows are timeless and can be enjoyed by anyone, anywhere. I've tried to watch other SoL anime, some I've enjoyed momentarily, while others I completely forgot I had watched after a while. But there's something very special about Azumanga and Nichijou that have stayed with me. I think it's the relatability of the characters, the comfortable, comedic nature of the shows, as well as the "cuteness" of it all. What I've found most important is that the girls in both shows feel real - they're not written as tropes with flat personalities. I'd love to know if anyone else has similar thoughts or has some good CGDCT/SoL shows that have gone unnoticed.

 No.326

>>324
I've noticed that about Nichijou too, that everyone generally behaves in a fairly grounded, human way - aside from the parts where reactions etc. are intentionally exaggerated for comic effect (goat suplex, every time anything explodes). It's especially noticeable when you contrast it to something like, I don't know, GJ-bu maybe, where the characters' personalities are so rooted in archetypes you pretty much need a fair bit of existing familiarity with the SoL genre to understand them.

Never actually watched Azumanga yet, it's on the to-watch list but I'm worried it'll be a bit Seinfeld Syndrome if all the CGDCT shows that followed it nicked the good ideas from it and did them to death.

What do you think of Arawi's other manga, CITY? From what I've read so far (first 4 volumes) it seems on par with Nichijou quality-wise. It starts off feeling quite slice of life-y and episodic but gradually all the chapters kind of interlink into an actual story progression.

I'm rewatching some episodes right now and it still absolutely holds up. I would say you should definitely check it out. The characters are really what makes the show - Tomo being a genki girl feels more authentic because she reminds of girls I went to high school with who were high-energy and full of laughs. Other characters like Sakaki and Yomi actually have some real depth to them on an emotional level that doesn't feel cheap or tacked on like in poorly-written SoL anime.

I actually haven't read CITY, so I'm going to have to check it out. I love his art style and how simplified his forms are while still being unique. His art is very fun to look at and helps the story and comedy a lot unlike a lot mainstream anime that just copy-paste the same, conventional moé art style.

what do you guys think about hobbyani? its a genre that refers to manga based on some kind of hobby (usually toys and video games) thats often marketed to children-think digimon and medabots

this sort of stuff exploded in the 2000s, but i dont see kids watching this stuff anymore. honestly a shame because theres a lot of love put into this stuff, even if the stories arent the most mature or profound.

I watched pokemon a lot as a kid. I used to sit in front oft he TV with my binder of pokemon cards, whose organizational structure changed every week or so, and flip to find whatever card corresponded with the pokemon on screen. My favorite is butterfree. Is that in the genre?

 No.279

>>276
great stuff, i have fond memories of watching kids battling with their beyblades during summer camp.

i don't know how they're marketing hobbyani in japan but here in the west i haven't really seen any advertisements for toys or reruns for a couple years now (outside of pokemon).

i think the adult audience has remained over the years and they continue to purchase merchandise, watch the classics and check out the newer shows, but the genre doesn't seem to get a lot of new blood thanks to limited marketing towards kids.

>>277
pokemon is definitely hobbyani

 No.288

Some time ago Bakugan seemed quite popular, and then Yo-kai Watch. I don't know exactly nowadays because I've been kinda isolated.

 No.311

Unfortunately the more Japan's population ages the less you will get proper kids anime, its mostly reboots for older fans now. Plus kids grow up with Ipads now, so cards, tops, etc are kind of out.

That's false for several reasons. Digital toys are not new to Japan, a lot of hobbyani are based off digital games, and analog games have been increasing in sales.

Does Hellsing Ultimate count? It was released from 2006 to 2012. Or can we only talk about the episodes which were released before 2010?

You should alwas talk about Hellsing ultimate, THE ONLY GOOD HELLSING!

The art style is very 2000s I'd say it's fine.

The tv show had an aesthetic that the ovas failed to capture imo.
2 things that always bothered me about ultimate were the unnaturally glowing teeth everyone has(sometimes its like they are holding a lightbulb in their mouths) and the plastic looking blood.
Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

 No.237[Reply]

For how good it was, the two Ef: series are almost never talked about today. Or maybe it was because I watched it 10 years ago, but it is a shame that’s it’s passed over for other anime at the time

 No.240

Does it suffer from the usual problems VN adaptations tend to suffer from?

 No.248

File: 1697226878637.jpg (132.59 KB, 704x396, pretentiousart.jpg)

>>240
Yes, definitely, and this seems to be a controversial opinion because the ef adaptation is very highly rated basically everywhere. Note that I only watched the first season, and that was also a long time ago.

I played the VN first and it's one of the best VNs I've ever played. If you haven't played it, there are 5 separate arcs (the VN is linear with one heroine, but the arcs have different protagonists) split up into two games. The first season of the adaptation adapts the first three arcs, which are the first game and the first arc of the second game, which is strange considering these arcs are meant to be sequential and yet in the anime they happen simultaneously.

The game gets progressively more depressing as the arcs go on, culminating in the final arc. Therefore, the first two arcs aren't really that depressing, the main thing I liked about it is the love triangle being portrayed very realistically. Unfortunately, like most VN adaptations, the slow-paced style of the VN turns into ADHD like rapid speed with multiple arcs being shown in one episode shoving a 30 hour game and the first third of another 30 hour game into a single cour. And yet, shaft STILL has the time to have five minutes of absolutely nothing happening except text appearing on the screen for no reason other than to portray the heroine of the first arc as having crippling dependency issues, which she doesn't in the VN. The drama is ramped up to a million, making the "realistic love triangle" into yet another example of a love triangle where the characters are insane and do extremely inhumane things to each other for no apparent reason.

It's a real shame, because I love ALL of shaft's other shows of this era, and yet ef seems to stick out like a sore thumb as the only shaft show that I really truly hate. The only real positive about it is that it looks gorgeous and the symbolism, but that's expected of the studio.

>Thanks for this anon. I'm not the guy you're replying to but I have been meaning to get into this series for years now but was indecisive since I didn't know whether to get into the anime or the visual novel. The anime looks beautiful and the animation is also pretty good, but I'll stick with the visual novel because of those caveats that you had mentioned. Again, thanks a lot!

Anime iyashikei anime fans here?

I liked Aria: the animation a lot.
It really embodies the 2000s style of animation.

 No.219

Binchou-tan is a really cute iyashikei anime from the 00s with short episodes, I have rewatched it many times. I downloaded the raws of the manga from Perfect Dark a long time ago but it doesn't have furigana so I couldn't read the moonrunes.

 No.224

Aria and YKK are two of my favorite series

I ended up picking this up because of your post. I can't believe I put off watching this for so long; what a soothing anime. It's fun to hear a very young Hana Kanazawa too.
