/lum/ will never die - for all of its faults, I appreciate that at least it was given a chance, and while it's probably going to be forgotten about in the next decade, it was nice to see something new in 30 years.

nu-lum killed all creativity. I don't think it'll really be remembered other then it becoming an (oh yeah, that happened) thing within the community.

The only way /lum/ dies is if it's fans stop being creative which /lum/ is slowly dying from. A lack of creativity and will.

we just gotta find some time to actually spend here and make things; it's just that we're also a super niche community about a 45 year old series

which to be fair, i am actually doing that because the uy fanbase shouldn't be allowed to die, i'm just really slow about it because irl shit

 No.510

so i decided to adapt uyas into shorts for my shitty recap series (because it's easier to get people on yt shorts to look at uyas because pretty colours) and i added in tons of brainrot for all the zoomer kids: https://youtube.com/shorts/_GM23jumyVc

I don't hate your work btw, I've made worse shittier content in the past myself that I came to resent. I just don't think you should make shorts. They're the lowest of the low content one can make. Respect yourself and don't make that stuff.

oh yeah no the shorts are basically a "i have a joke but the concept isn't big enough for an episode", trying to take advantage of whatever marketing bullshit exists might not be worth the time, or maybe it is; only one good way to find out. actual episodes are being worked on, just irl shit getting in the way, pic not related.

>that episode that takes place in Hawaii

Weird episode, it doesn't really feel like the U.S. apart from shoehorning in a damn American blondie. It's funny but I would've loved to see what the gang would've done in downtown Honolulu with all the goofy cultural differences happening around them. It just feels like we're still in Japan in that episode.

 No.534

i think the guy's issue is with the show itself more than it is with lum

 No.535

>>534
This, but at the same time, I also don't like nu-l*m's look. It just looks wrong. For a show trying to be accurate to the manga, it sure failed in the art department. In fact the new show has a very clown vomit look to it. I just don't like it, nor is the show funny. It just sucks ass. It doesn't try to fix the issues with early Urusei Yatsura chapters, it just makes them worse somehow.

I guess if you're really into the whole Ataru x Lum thing, you'll like this show more. But in my honest opinion, Urusei Yatsura is more then just Lum and Ataru's shitty relationship. The 81' anime grabbed all the flaws of the manga and fixed them to make an amazing, interesting, and experimental show.

Oshii, whether you like him or not, created a really good and fun show to watch, despite his flaws as a creator. He gave a new and interesting way to adapt a manga into an anime. In my honest opinion, he created the best Urusei Yatsura content there is to see. Nothing comes close to Oshii's Urusei Yatsura. The best Urusei Yatsura episodes were directed by Oshii. And you can't deny that he created fucking masterpieces using the characters of Urusei Yatsura.

The new anime has nothing going for it nor does it have anything ANYTHING, to say. It's just slop, even if the creators of the new anime are putting their heart and soul into it, they've failed to get onto Oshii's level of direction. The new anime will in fact, be forgotten to the sands of time. It just doesn't have anything new. It doesn't have a new perspective. It's just the manga in video form. You're better off reading the manga. You would probably find it funnier.

 No.536

>>535
I can deny it all I want. I agree the manga is better than the new anime, but that's because the manga is fucking great. Oshi's military fetish and complete deliberate refusal to understand the characters he was working with will always prevent me from considering his work to be the pinnacle of UY, despite some decent expansion on some gags.

 No.537

>>535
>The best Urusei Yatsura episodes were directed by Oshii

You know what, I would argue against this personally, but that's because Oshii directed way fewer episodes than people think. Now Junji Nishimura, he's got the real good shit.

> The new anime has nothing going for it nor does it have anything ANYTHING, to say

Yeah, they had to play it really safe with it, and sadly UYAS is mid, even though I personally like it.

>>536
> complete deliberate refusal to understand the characters he was working with

Stormtrooper here, I 100% do the exact same thing and I completely understand why Oshii did the exact same thing. The characters are way more one-dimensional than they could be, should be, and diving deeper into them is basically low-hanging fanfiction fruit. Except he made a movie doing that readapting one episode of the anime. Agree with his execution or not, the guy was definitely onto something.

seconded on the "clown vomit" look. yes, rumiko did use more vibrant and varied colors than the old anime did, but the new anime is like a shitty acid trip where it's all just bright and flickering for no fucking reason. the few manga chapters that actually were in color look beautiful - if they captured this look in the new series people would be praising it.

 No.539

>>535
> it's all just bright and flickering for no fucking reason.

I don't really see that and it matches the color covers well. I get the art in the manga had more white backgrounds.

 No.540

>>537
>Oshii directed way fewer episodes than people think

Didn't he direct like 107 episodes? I think he mostly did all of Early Urusei Yatsura Before Only You.

>The characters are way more one-dimensional than they could be, should be

This, UY is fucking GAG manga, most of the characters in the manga itself are mostly used as props. I'm honestly glad the 81' anime fleshed out the world of UY instead of making it as dull and boring as possible by taking a safe route and going by the manga 1 to 1. Honestly it seems like the manga itself just doesn't translate as well to video then it does to paper. Which is why the timing in the nu-anime is all weird and off.

>>538
Rumiko's colors doesn't look bad, in fact really nice to look at. It seems like the nu-anime decided to ramp up the contrast and turn it into a god forsaken eye sore.

 No.541

Yeah, fleshed out like making Mendo into a nazi, Lum into an innocent little girl and Ataru into a pedophile.

 No.542

>>538
Zoomers sure liked jojo because of vibrant colours, they might have liked UYAS because of it too (IF IT WASN'T SO GODDAMN MID)

>>540
Check the Wikipedia, someone actually went through all the credits. Oshii did a lot of good episodes, but his actual full on director credit is only like 40 of them.

>>541
Nah, Mendou is an afficionado that really likes the whole aesthetic. He's the first Wehraboo. I'm not saying Mendou's in the right here at all, but he's not a literal nazi. Lum ended up naive in the manga as well, although I'd say she became way more so with Deen, and Ataru only asked out a child one time and that was meant to be a gag like "how fucking low is this guy really going" (and I'm like 90% sure that was a Deen episode).

 No.543

>>542
>but his actual full on director credit is only like 40 of them

Despite the low episode count, he managed to make several great episodes that managed to get on the top ten best of the series, which is pretty impressive if you ask me. The worst episodes in the series were never made by Oshii.

We don't know what the pipeline actually was though. Its common for series directors to heavily edit the storyboards of episodes or change up scripts, request certain staff for certain episodes, etc, without taking extra credit for it.

>>545
Surprising if that's the case (been too long since I watched any) since the episode scripts he wrote for Patlabor TV were great.
