Start with Dominion Tank Police.
This should be the standard response when people are asking for anime recommendations. It covers a wide variety of generas and is both serious and silly at the same time. The sub and dub are both watchable so regardless of which you prefer you can watch it.
If you liked it then you can proceed to other anime from the time, if not maybe the 80s isnt the decade for you.

Currently watching the Patlabor OVAs, and can absolutely recommend them if you're a fan of Mecha/Police action comedy and a fan of Mamoru Oshii

The dub removes a lot of music and doesn't even sub a 20 second part of the scene where it just shows Japanese on a computer screen for some reason. I watched it dubbed and didn't like it as much and the subbed version was just so much better by comparison.

Actually I think the dub REMOVED music from scenes. It's been a while since I last watched it but I remember that stuck out when switching between the sub and dub.

Well...still Dirty Pair. I liked Urashiman a lot, it's a goofy future cop show.

Fist of the North Star is a classic if you can handle some shonen pacing

Maison Ikokku is my favourite Takahashi and is one of the few to have a good ending

Project A-Ko is pretty much the perfect anime
