Those chans are mostly sucky. Sushichan is the only decent one.

Nah, it's shit as well.

What chans don’t suck these days?

Found a site that made me quite exited. It's https://chan.city/index.php?random=si
Seeing that it has been updated not to long ago made me think I finally found a site again that keeps track of imageboards and is being maintained as well. Turns out there are quite a few links there that lead to nothing. Besides this I knew most of that stuff already. Not only that, I even noticed that some boards are missing. Worst of all was the content many of those places have. I knew there was always awful stuff around, low quality content, rude bevaviour, the same boards everywhere, disgusting things and so on. Still, I has been a while since I have felt that resignated.

Imageboards are a sad situation nowadays. The new cancer will say "oh noes, you got old, this is the new default".
But not long ago some boards was actually good. take any imageboard, it had some boards that could actually have good content, nowadays everything is meme-meme-meme-cancer-meme-meme-hurrdurr.

At least wapchan exists.

Imageboards have been in a sad state of affairs for like a two decades now, back when the internet was smaller, less people, and generally little chans spawned up all over the place and either got found and raided, which to be honest, was a good thing, as it generally brought a couple more people round, once the raid settled, you might find some new anons who actually enjoyed the place and the content they posted there.
>oh noes, you got old, this is the new default
Unfortunately, this is the case, whether you like it or not, unless shit cycles and people post as fast as modern social media, you'll always be in the boomer camp.
I started hanging around in chans because it was the only place I knew that I could discuss Lupin III and Tenchi Muyo etc, because it just wasnt in my country at the time, eventually, I migrated to 888chan after some raid and got into chanwars and rvb stuff, then ended upin lainchan because it was quiet and chill, then various chans /x/ boards, mainly for the creepypastas and IRC horror groups.
Now, there's a Youtube video for everything, a channel and faces for every subject, platforms for instant communication everywhere, it's a sea of information and everyone is in speedboats.
Back in the day, before Google was king and you had to use altavista or something for search, you had no speedboat, the currents pulled you and you paddled to find your little islands of communication.
those days are gone, and unless things like constantly updated webrings, or an all encompassing chanlist become the thing, chans will always vanish into obscurity.
Usually because the ppm goes down to 0 and cp bots end up getting the place closed.
I liked the idea of webrings, but feel like they get cliquey, the old overboard was great, i'd have my regulars, but again, they eventually fall off or don't update.
it's the same reason why bbs shit is dead
why forums are dead
even IRC is a shadow of it's old self.
Just enjoy the little victories, the brief moments in time when a good chan, like wapchan, comes along, and even if you don't post a lot, check in every now and then, just to say hello.

Great post anon. I also believe that imageboards have been shit for a long time. The internet has always been very shitty, its just that lots of people really like to look back at it with rose tinted glasses.

I honestly think it's the people who lived back when it was "new".
And by new, i mean, not as commercial and every day as it is now.
the internet you had in your pocket, on your phone, was enough to maybe download some mp3s and ringtones, enough to check the news in reading mode.
it's weird though, I always had a computer, my dad worked for Sun Micro, so we always had internet, even back when it ran through the phone line and it was cheaper after 6pm, we always had it on, so I could go to school, and i'd have movies and music that no one else knew about, because back then, the only shit that other kids knew was what was local, through word of mouth, or what their relatives knew or cared about, or worse, what was shown on TV.
Again, I was always on the net from a young age, so I found music and Anime through the internet, not a single person I knew had any clue what it was until pokemon came around on TV once everyone got cable TV.
That wasn't the "peak time" of the internet, the golden age or whatever, but to me, it was the best time, because I had access to a world that went beyond the local.
I had friends in other countries that I spoke to and played games with every night, we'd all be in IRC and we'd download the same movie and watch it at the same time, multi-streaming wasn't really doable then, that came later, to me, and to others like me, always see that as the best times, the same as chans were.
it was shit, it was slow, it was basic, it was the 4am whirring and clicking of a HDD you heard between songs on winamp, you'd post on your chan, you'd talk with your friends, you'd listen to music.
you had your own world.
that's what people look back on, the fond memories they had of those times, and the fact that everyone nowadays has unlimited access 24/7 information, news, the internet has become as constant in the world as oxygen.
the "magic" of that time is gone, the wild west was won, and the few of us that remember the "good days" was nothing about things being shitty now compared to then, they were just as shitty then too, but it's like the first time you orgasmed, or the times when you had a smoke or a drink when you were young.
it's become common now, it's just another thing, nothing special, lol internet.

Also, man, i am in a ranting mood tonight it seems.
apologies for the walls of text

I have my own fond memories of forums and IRC, though being from a slightly younger generation that's mixed in with steam and minecraft (beta). One day I'm gonna get myself one of those old sparcstations.
Imageboards are what people make of them - it's just that a majority of the time they're not concerned with things like "community" or "culture", at least from an administrative level, so you end up with the same "4chan but edgier" retreads, and even boards that don't follow this philosophy often cohabitate with ones who do. I can't bring people back to the old days - but I can make a fun little site where you can post about stuff and make the CSS look nice and not soulless and have a net radio station for the heck of it. That's what the magic of the internet is, having a little net hangout with a bunch of doo dads.

>That's what the magic of the internet is, having a little net hangout with a bunch of doo dads
Exactly, That's what it's all about.
Even now, it's current year, and i'm listening to the wap-fm radio on winamp, talking to anons on the chans.

Just because the world got a lot more connected, you've got 45 thousand connected devices, and you got a lot more older, it doesn't mean you can't find a little cozy corner to chill at 4am.

The webring Trashchan, Smug, Sleepy, Junku, and some others is on is pretty good. I hear there's been drama, but I've never seen it. I try to post there often, especially on /late/ and /comfy/. I also lurk here pretty regularly, and check in on a couple other places. A post of reasonable quality begets a post of reasonable quality. I don't really want these places to be crazy active, but even if the people who check in once or twice a month and usually just lurk, were engaged and posting once a week, I think most of these little corners of the internet would have a nice pace. So, maybe if I keep posting others will keep posting and maybe things will be alright.

IRC is still very active, many servers but I don't know one that isn't full of trolls.
Except libera and OFTC, but those are specific cases.

every time irc in current times is discussed it's full of people declaring it dead and then someone saying it's active. i think the problem is we don't really know where to start looking for servers (not to mention setting up bouncers and stuff feels like unnecessarily complexity compared to every single other chat protocol now)

>click on zerochan and scroll a bit
>actual cp
yeah imageboards are in a crisis

 No.517

Nah, the real point is:
Some IRC servers with a purpose will always be active with that purpose, and will not be dangerous to expose your IP because there's an active moderation: OFTC and Libera
Then you forget everything I said up there and add rizon, where what you said is true. I wouldn't enter rizon without a proper bouncer, mind other even more obscure IRC servers.

 No.518

>>517
Oh also there's IRCnet and Undernet that are still very active, but I'm not sure about them.

 No.520

Aside from wapchan the only other imageboards I use are lainchan (for tech only) and [s4s] and occasionally lurk other 4chan boards for wallpapers or animal pics and other specifics. I got my start on 4-ch and still prefer textboards and traditional forums tbh. Shame there aren't many left and the ones that are usually as low traffic as this place.

I was exploring gopher, some people maintain there's some hidden gems worth exploring.
