i recently got really into beat 'em ups thanks to streets of rage 4. so far i played through the whole capcom and konami catalogue and some smaller indie ones (mostly modern ones) and i have to say, 1989s Crime Fighters left the biggest impression on me and a really fucking bitter taste in my mouth. Maybe it was just the emulator or ROM i used but holy fuck that game is not fun.

What you have to consider is that these games were designed for arcade cabinets and were hastily ported to consoles as home systems became more popular. These games were designed to make the player insert as many coins as possible and to make matter worse they were designed with a joystick in mind so their console ports have the shittiest button mapping known to mankind.still there are quiet a lot of gems in the pile , my fave being the golden axe series.

golden axe is still on my list, i played knights of the round and one of the two DnD ones and didnt quite enjoy it as much, the setting is a huge factor in these kind of games for me. tho there are three with a different setting that i really liked tenchi wo kurau 2, metamorphic force and battle circuit.
>they were designed with a joystick in mind
i know exactly what you mean, its such a pain to pull of or even discover moves when they require some esoteric movement of the stick, it took till my 5th or 6th playthrough of violent storm to learn that you have a ground sweep. i refuse to look up a move list till i have beaten the game at leat 10 times

Golden axe is pretty much a medieval/viking themed streets of rage.also if i remember correctly some of the early tekken games had a beat em up mode, tekken 3 definitely had one.The psx had quiet a lot of good beat em ups.as a kid my go to beat em up on the psx was crisis beat.we used to play couch co-op with my brother and friends every weekend and beatemp ups were always on the menu.sadly some of those kids have died over the years so only the memories remain.

Golden Axe plays more like Double Dragon with a bomb button than Dungeons and Dragons did. The DnD games leaned a little too much into the items and gear imo it's kind of distracting

Havent played double dragon is it any good?

Kinda funny that beat em ups are all but dead but the fightan genre streives

Fighting games have a more competitive nature as compared to beat em ups which are mostly co operative.also beat em ups arent autist magnets for some reason?

They are not really dead, just not mainstream. Look up openBOR and the community around it. Besides that there are modern indie titels like river girls or the take down, final revenge etc. there are a hole lotta games besides the classics.

i played golden axe over the past few days on multiple different emulator to see the difference and get a better feel for the game. I really like the Background art, its gorgeous and the way the special attack system is implemented is quite nice and surprisingly generous. i was really surprised about the invulnerability durig grapple attacks. The game itself is surprisingly short even for an arcade brawler and the coin grabbing parts are really noticeable, also the AI is fucking retarded as soon as a rideable is on screen but all in all the mount system is a nice idea as an alternativ to the usual temporary weapons.

>sadly some of those kids have died over the years so only the memories remain.

i know that feeling to well, i still have the saves i played with them. i wont touch them but it would really sting if i would lose them

When i was a kid,There was this rundown arcade near thw park that had golden axe, mortal kombat,a game that i think was metal slug, outrun and a bike game i dont remember the name of. We would go there every weekend and being poor little shits we would give all our coins to the best player and just watch him play hoping to find some secret stage or character.I remember mortal kombat 2(or 3) had a lot of secrets.

Most of the kids i spoke of died due to a heroin epidemic that hit my town during the early 2010s.We moved away from that neighbourhood over two decades ago but i recently went back to see if the arcade building was still there and they had built a highway in its place.as in a full 8 lane highway.the old neighbourhood wasnt the same either, all the locals have moved away and were replaced with immigrants from the countryside, meth dealers and methheads all over the place, dirty grimey streets filled with stray dogs, people speaking a language i couldnt understand etc. There was another arcade near our old house but some restaurant had turned it into a warehouse.I came across an old shopkeeper and i asked him about my friends, most moved away, some died, others had simply vanished.Thats when i realized that the world i knew no longer exists.

I play old games because i want to go back to a better time, when things werent so complicated.
