I just beat it and I want to share some of my thoughts.

It is very good HOWEVER it is my opinion that they absolutely should've ditched the multiplayer aspect completely for two reasons

1. It took away resources from making more sp content
2. The message system partly antithetical to figuring things out for yourself. A mimic chest? There's a warning for that.

Everyone should play the game through offline first and use online mode for later playthroughs.

The online was what made the game such a unique and memorable experience. I still remember my first time getting invaded, and my first time beating an invader. No PvE content (or dedicated PvP content) has ever left such an impression on me.

Then play it offline? The multiplayer aspect makes the whole souls series unique in many different ways.

>Took away resources for making more sp content

Honestly, it probably didn't. Beyond covenants and the whole other world defense thing I really don't know what other multiplayer aspects that were new from Demon's Souls. They could've easily ported the whole thing, fixed it up so it worked in the game and left it there but they added more stuff to it which was nice. I doubt the time they spent on it could've saved the last half of that game.

Besides, the multiplayer aspect was a factor as to why these games were great, endless replayability with the PvP stuff and invasions give humanity a risk otherwise it'd be a benefit constantly, I still remember getting invaded in DS1 to this very day and it's a very memorable experience.

>The message system partly antithetical to figuring things out for yourself. A mimic chest? There's a warning for that.

The messages could be lying or in some cases they won't appear until you do the action that the game wants you to do. Probably more an internet/loading issue than anything else but it's happened to me many times. Also, there's a limit to how much you can actually tell someone. If there's somebody you shouldn't attack ahead but they're squished between several enemies, you won't have enough messages to warn you about it beyond "Friend ahead". In a similar vein, seeing pools of blood in a new area makes you double take and think "hold on, something is here" and you're more careful. If that wasn't there, you'd just walk in and die to whatever the fuck killed everyone else. It'd be cheap for the sake of being cheap, at least with the messages/blood system you have a CHANCE to survive an encounter.

It's also part of the co-op aspect of the game. People want to help you as much as they want to hinder you, and messages that are helpful get rated and you get healed from that rating. It's a system that is pretty good for assisting everyone else. It's not just about being a lone warrior in this game, there's so much here trying to help you beat it and make the world less difficult.

Like, would you be happy dying 10x over to cheap shit a message would've pointed out to you? I can remember countless times a message stopped my death and many others where I died to something and returned to see a few messages warning me of what just happened, or even worse falling for the "Try jumping" or "Try attacking" that some messages claimed to do.

I like the message system, but it's more useful in Elden Ring where the world is fucking huge. It's also nice seeing messages from other players encouraging you to persist and kick that bosses ass.

I remember defeating the last Tree Sentinel in Elden Ring and hated him so much because he'd split in two and made the fight obnoxiously difficult and once I beat him the first message I saw while facing the tree was "rot, Erdtree" and it never felt more fitting.

I found messages pretty much completely useless in Elden Ring since there were just too many memes. The game really suffered for its popularity in that one regard. The previous games had their share of jokes and misleading messages but I don't know that even a single message I saw in all of Elden Ring was actually helpful. Way too many messages placed right on top of things you need to interact with too. I never felt like it might be beneficial to play offline just to get rid of the messages in any of the other games.

I remember reading somewhere that Japanese players kept hanging around the small keeps and forts at night assuming something cool would happen due to all the "Fort, Night" messages.

True, but there were still some useful messages around the place. You'd eventually find "try finger but hole" and "fort night" but occasionally you'd get some decent ones.

I remember seeing "grass" all the time as well since "kusa" means LOL in Japanese IIRC.
