Other hobbies of mine are typing on keyboards, trying to be ambidextrous, playing with animals, cooking, driving, listening to music, doing things that are healthy for me. There's probably more but I'm just saying things I enjoy doing at this point anyway.

>>1292>I wouldn't even know where to start with it.Easy, this anon got himself a dieffenbachia plant as new roommate/pet plant. Those plants are hard to kill by accident. Or go for succulents, they come in many awesome colors sizes and shapes... but a dieffenbachia will grow on you fast!
Maybe a Aglaonema is another option, one like Leon the professional had in the movie. Both are very forgiving plant friends.
Have a nice day everyone!

tea kettles are neat little devices. i'm going to see if i can build something like one!

No.1397
>>1379How would you make your own tea kettle? Sounds interesting.
>but which of the three do you prefer?Go is the most fun, of course. You have a lot of freedom on the board and it's easier to recover from a mistake. Chess is just frustrating but I've been playing too long to stop.
That reminds me that I really need to finish Hikaru no Go some day.
>and isn't shogi basically japanese chess? It's very similar! Shogi and chess both come from the same game (chaturanga), but shogi doesn't have as powerful pieces so the games tend to start out slower and there's no real endgame like chess, just competing checkmating attacks. Interestingly, some shogi players also play chess at a very high level. Yoshiharu Habu, one of the greatest living shogi players, is also around 2400 elo in chess.

I like messing around with music. I'm aiming to learn a bunch of instruments well enough to sample my playing and build some tracks out of it. Virtuosity isn't my end goal or anything. More like being proficient enough to get the job done. So far I've mainly been learning guitar/bass and keyboard. I tried learning the flute, but I have pretty serious asthma that makes it difficult to play. I intend to get back to it anyway at some point and hope I can overcome that problem. I also plan on getting a nesting drum kit soon.

>>1371i just mend some clothes atm T_T, working takes all my energy to try to sew like a doll clothe by hand! also a sewing machine is quite expensive at the moment.
No.1471
>>1405I've wanted to try and mend some of my own clothes but couldn't figure out how. Looking online was useless because search engines are useless nowadays, and I can't figure out how I'm supposed to get the cloth to overlap without it fraying. I have to stretch it in order to get it in a sewable position so there's no way I could ever hem it.
No.1474
>>1399May I suggest trying the harmonica? It's sometimes used by doctors to help respiratory therapy patients. It could help strenghten your breathing muscles and help you with the flute (I don't know, I'm not a doctor).
https://www.webmd.com/lung/copd/features/harmonica-and-copdAnother option is to use a smaller flute such as a tin whistle or a small ocarina, because it requires less air.

>>1399Do you have any background in music or music theory? I recommend focusing on theory along with keyboard first, then branching out.
No.1590
>>1474I actually a travel didgeridoo I bought to try and strengthen my lungs as well as a fife that feels superseded by the flute. I gave up trying the didgeridoo after a short time because it felt uncomfortable and almost painful to practice and didn't feel inspired by the sound of it.
I'll have to keep what you said about the harmonica in mind, although I can't say it's an instrument I really like the sound of. Thanks for letting me know about that.
>>1589Not really. I started making music by screwing around with a DAW step sequencer for rhythms, then moved onto using a piano roll to come up with chords and melodies. I would download MIDI files and then examine them to give me an idea of how to make music by imitation. It was after years of that that I got the idea of getting a MIDI keyboard, and that definitely was the right decision. I ended up doing part of a course on keyboard playing that has helped a lot so far. When it comes to actually learning music theory in a more academic sense, I've always struggled with it since it just sounds like gobbledygook to me. I feel like I do better picking up theory by just taking pieces apart and trying to replicate them.

No.1592
>>1590>a travel didgeridooI'd heard about travel guitars but never travel didgeridoos! I had a didgeridoo but I could never get the hang of the circular breathing thing.
Regarding the harmonica, I unfortunately don't know any other wind instrument that would work similarly (both ways - blowing and drawing air in) with a different sound. Maybe the Sheng? It has a softer sound to me, and blowing in is probably a good lung workout.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkkA5yWrvww>I feel like I do better picking up theory by just taking pieces apart and trying to replicate them. Not him, but that's how I learn what I know in music. I can't sight-read sheet music, but I learned a lot by studying Celtic music and learning tunes by heart, especially when it comes to melodic phrases.

>>1590>I feel like I do better picking up theory by just taking pieces apart and trying to replicate them.As long as you understand what you are doing, for example playing chords versus notes, or what scales are, you're more than fine! I didn't really mean that you should become a music scholar (those people do literally just speak gobbledygook), just enough to get by. Based on what you said, sounds like you're on the right path!

>I can't sight-read sheet musicI don't think that's really that big of a deal, although it depends on what kind of music you're dealing with. Historically your average folk musician probably had little knowledge of musical notation.
>>1608>As long as you understand what you are doing, for example playing chords versus notes, or what scales are, you're more than fine!Yeah, I know that at least.
>I didn't really mean that you should become a music scholar (those people do literally just speak gobbledygook)It would still be helpful to at least be able to understand the gobbledygook.

creative writing, as a start. i've always dreamed of writing a visual novel, so i churned out about a 100k word first draft which outlines the setting, start to finish. this one took a while but it was a fun exercise in expanding into a hobby i hadn't done before. it gave me a deeper appreciation for how hard character writing really is, and keeping character dialogue in tone.
programming as a hobby, to get more exposure than what i do for work. mostly tinkering in unity as it's a far different world from the integration world that i otherwise live in. it's fun to see all the different applications and working with more robust languages than js/py.
lastly, i enjoy making things. both 3d printing and with eva foam. i want to launch back into cosplay after having setbacks from covid and such. i want to refine my skills further and make very complex pieces with lightning, etc.
last is probably more boring DIY stuff that i'd like to do more of. but this is on pause until i buy a house, hopefully tentatively next year. small things like making a shed, having a woodworking space, having a garden, that kind of thing.
if i had infinite time there's so many more hobbies i would branch out into, but ultimately i have to prioritize what i do.

>>2143I'm learning harmonica. Probably one of the cheapest instruments. The starter Harmonica I got cost only 15 dollars. And though it's not very nice it sounds just fine. But you only get one key per harmonica, so you need at least eight to be able to play along to any song. And by that point you can also get different tunings, or get into playing with an effects pedal. Still, simple acoustic harminca is probably one of the cheapest instruments to get into, and I even found a free beginners course online desinged to teach how to imrpov from zero starting skill.

The project ran into some issues, so I haven't worked on it in a long while, but it can still be worked on more if some hurdles are cleared
I felt it became a bit too much of a squirtgun simulator, so the squirtguns might have to be nerfed, I also had some difficulties continuing with making the graphics for it
