>>76Yeah, it's really good. It's been a while since I watched it but I remember enjoying it throughout even if it had some weird moments (Johan pretending to be his sister and seducing that detective, for one). I didn't really get the ending, or Johan's motivation when I watched it initially and read a few posts/watched a few videos about the ending which really helped me understand it. How did you perceive it, OP?
My favourite character was Grimmer just for how he was in his scenes, it always felt like whenever he was on screen you'd hear this theme:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq_nK6KwK_A and it fit him so well, a man who was forcing a sentimental smile because he truly had no emotions, in a way he was kind of like the opposite of Johan and the idea of the Nihilism in general. His sadness/happiness over being able to grieve over his dead son at the end really got to me, I couldn't even imagine how something like that could feel.
For some reason, I was under the impression Monster was basically an anime about making a second Hitler (a second Monster) due to a few scenes I saw before watching it so by the time the first half of the pretty much had me thinking about it for a while (even with those neo-nazi's he meets with in the earlier episodes) so it was interesting to see that I was wrong and it went in a different way entirely.
I was shocked to learn the anime is pretty much a 1:1 scene by scene of the manga as well and the dub was also surprisingly good, and I really like both the sub and dub of Monster. Have you read the follow up novel "Another Monster" which kinda explains all the unanswered questions that Monster had and I think even explains where Johan goes at the end?
