I just finished watching it yesterday. It's somewhat slow, but the journey of the main characters was interesting to sit through and Johan is a magnificent villain. The ending was also kind of a surprise but satisfying

Yeah, it's really good. It's been a while since I watched it but I remember enjoying it throughout even if it had some weird moments (Johan pretending to be his sister and seducing that detective, for one). I didn't really get the ending, or Johan's motivation when I watched it initially and read a few posts/watched a few videos about the ending which really helped me understand it. How did you perceive it, OP?

My favourite character was Grimmer just for how he was in his scenes, it always felt like whenever he was on screen you'd hear this theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq_nK6KwK_A and it fit him so well, a man who was forcing a sentimental smile because he truly had no emotions, in a way he was kind of like the opposite of Johan and the idea of the Nihilism in general. His sadness/happiness over being able to grieve over his dead son at the end really got to me, I couldn't even imagine how something like that could feel.

For some reason, I was under the impression Monster was basically an anime about making a second Hitler (a second Monster) due to a few scenes I saw before watching it so by the time the first half of the pretty much had me thinking about it for a while (even with those neo-nazi's he meets with in the earlier episodes) so it was interesting to see that I was wrong and it went in a different way entirely.

I was shocked to learn the anime is pretty much a 1:1 scene by scene of the manga as well and the dub was also surprisingly good, and I really like both the sub and dub of Monster. Have you read the follow up novel "Another Monster" which kinda explains all the unanswered questions that Monster had and I think even explains where Johan goes at the end?

As I said, it WAS slow, but the cast of characters kept me going. I thought Johan's motivation was that of causing chaos wherever he went, but it all made sense once it was explained he was erasing his existence. As for the ending, there were only two possibilities: either Johan reformed or he started a new killing spree. I was inclined to believe the former interpretation

>My favourite character was Grimmer
Grimmer was truly a bro. He dying after fighting as himself instead of Steiner was a great ending for him

>I was under the impression Monster was basically an anime about making a second Hitler
I was a little under that impression as well but with all the parallels of Johan being the Antichrist I expected someone wanting to use him to kill people indiscriminately

>Have you read the follow up novel "Another Monster" which kinda explains all the unanswered questions that Monster had and I think even explains where Johan goes at the end?
No, but I've seen some discussion about it online so I know Johan's fate

By the way, if there was a piece of dialogue that remained with me after watching Monster, it's definitely pic related where Grimmer confronts Bonaparta

Yep, it's a slow burn but very worth it. I was surprised I was able to keep up with it despite not being a fan of longer shows, I'm guessing the dub helped in some regard.

>I thought Johan's motivation was that of causing chaos wherever he went, but it all made sense once it was explained he was erasing his existence.
Yeah, as I said in my other post I originally thought it was about another Hitler but I after that I thought that it was just that Johan was a force of chaos and Tenma noticed this and since he saved him he decided it was up to him to stop him, which Johan gladly accepted since if Tenma doesn't stop him he'd continue doing this. It wasn't until I read up on it that I actually understood the ending, my own stupidity at seeing the bigger picture I guess.

>I was a little under that impression as well but with all the parallels of Johan being the Antichrist I expected someone wanting to use him to kill people indiscriminately
For me, it was the scenes I saw, the neonazis and the whole German/East European feeling it had.

If you're okay with watching some videos on Monster, I remember finding these in 2020 and was a fun distraction for a while to watch. If not, that's cool thought I'd share regardless:

Watched it a couple of years ago and it's one of my favorites.
It does feel slow but it all pays off.
Lunge is a masterful character, there was always something alluring about him, this computer of a man that dedicates himself completely to his cause.
The ost is incredible, the op and the eds add to the theme of the story and set the mood for each episode.
Its been a while since ive watched it and i hope i will get to rewatch it soon.

Sorry anon, I haven't read the novel. I just know of it from an article I read that pretty much broke the whole thing down so I know what happened.
