Can there be a live action east-asian media board? I happen to love Japanese tv and film, but I seem to be the exception. Most fans of anime-manga, overlap with other Japanese media such as doujins, video games, and so forth, but not so much live action.

For myself, I actually don't like "japanese media' or culture per se, it's a kind of style and aesthetic that appears in some Japanese media but also elsewhere.

I'd include some anime but they would have to be full features or OVAs instead of whole series, unless they are short. I guess the hardest part is simply getting enough people to come along. And I don't want it to be yet another anime stream that runs the kind of anime you could see anywhere else.

There's almost no place to talk about old live action japanese films. You can see here someone made a rather thoughtful well articulated post on /tv/, and it got a whopping 2 responses before dropping off the map. Probably less than 10 people have ever read this post.

I also utterly adore trashy Japanese cinema as well as what might be considered more serious art. I love it all. It's the same kind of impulses for animation.

>Vichan has reached its end of life. many of us have lost interest in the project, and the current direction of the internet has not been good for imageboards, whether its ID verification laws, big social media companies killing competition, or Google being hostile towards smaller sites. There are other imageboard engines out there but even if you use them, these are still issues you will need to think about if you start an imageboard or UGC website. You can still install or fork vichan, but do so at your own risk.

It's true that this year I focused less on wapchan, which is something I outlined in >>3414. In truth, the redesign being shot down so fast back in Feburary >>3482 made me take a bit of a break since 39chan really did need a lot of work, and since the new year I joined a doujin circle, the staff of https://fuwanovel.moe/ , and went to five cons, on top of a VN script port project that's ongoing. However, I have been meaning to refocus this site back on retro anime (which is something I haven't been watching as much of lately so I'd like to resume as well), and will setup regular streams in the near future. Also probably the VN book club will return.

Something else to note is that wapchan is run almost entirely by me, there's only two other active jannies. So when I'm not around things move slower. If more people want to join the staff and help keep things active that would be appreciated

no? There are no plans to shut wapchan down (wapchan and 39chan will remain separate), and my continued involvement in 39chan was largely the result of us getting along very well. They've actually helped out wapchan directly in multiple ways.

If you have suggestions for characters/topics for the regular and /sp/ captchas, I can add them. But this captcha is what is keeping the site from all the CSAM spam it used to get, so I can't just disable it.

/sp/ is a difficult one because not everybody would recognize the same characters/topics. I guess if you leave some standard wapchan captcha characters there it would be fine. Its just frustrating to post there only to get endless questions about F1 cars and drivers. How about some beloved /lum/ related characters in sports gear?

Also for /lit/ you should have "what is the name of this book?" questions with the title clearly being shown in the captcha image.

I would vote against the captcha on /sp/ getting otaku media characters again, some regular posters on that board are not familiar with any of these characters.
What would maybe help is to add some really well known sports people to the captcha, like Ronaldo/Messi/Lebron/tiger woods ect.
Not sure if that would make it too easy to solve for spammers though.

Huh? We do accept Tor viewing. There are moderators that exclusively use the site through Tor. That is, if you don't manage to hit an IP previously used by a spammer, which is possible 😣. We are hooked to a Tor blocklist service for posting through, as most of the non-illegal but malicious spam came from Tor nodes and dealing with illegal spam is annoying enough 😔. If you can get a proxy with a fixed IP and still find yourself blocked, let us know on Matrix / e-mail the owner with the IP to be whitelisted.

The two month bar seemed standard and was confirmed to be doable, yet it should only act as a motivator (you can definitely keep working on it afterwards, we are okay with you pushing updates), not a deterrent. The goal is to put a foot forward, not a whole truck.

We are okay with late entries, yet we wouldn't want to drag it out for too long, we are already planning new stuff, and don't have unlimited resources.

With all the new users we've gotten recently, it's about time we put out the call for new banners!

Banners should be either 300x100 (3:1) or 300x225 (4:3). I'll also be adding a secondary set of "wide" banners in the same style you may have seen on some other imageboards (468x60), that will be displayed in the same area as the red announcement text.

Additionally, we could use more 88x31 buttons (geocities size), if anyone's good at making those.

SOME NOTES:

Banners/buttons can be sitewide or board specific, but any that highlight aspects of the site culture would be appreciated (we really need some VN inspired banners for instance). If you run/use a net friend site you are free to post wide banners about that site provided they are in good faith.

For editing, I've traditionally used GIMP, but you could even try and design them on the oekaki board!

Sometimes I've found it easier to work at 2-4x the size of the final banners. If you want to do this you can send me it at full size and I can display it at the intended resolution.

If you have the chops for animated banners (gif/webp), that would be greatly appreciated!
