Nah, the real point is:
Some IRC servers with a purpose will always be active with that purpose, and will not be dangerous to expose your IP because there's an active moderation: OFTC and Libera
Then you forget everything I said up there and add rizon, where what you said is true. I wouldn't enter rizon without a proper bouncer, mind other even more obscure IRC servers.

Oh also there's IRCnet and Undernet that are still very active, but I'm not sure about them.

Aside from wapchan the only other imageboards I use are lainchan (for tech only) and [s4s] and occasionally lurk other 4chan boards for wallpapers or animal pics and other specifics. I got my start on 4-ch and still prefer textboards and traditional forums tbh. Shame there aren't many left and the ones that are usually as low traffic as this place.

How exactly did imageboard raids work back in the day?. I'm not a newfren by any means, been on 4chan for decades, but I've never seen any "hey let's go raid this random altchan" threads ever. I've seen Twitch raids, kids websites (club penguin, habbo, etc), and promos like the Mountain Dew thing but never altchans. I thought the imageboard raid stuff was started by a certain website we will not speak of.

Anyone wanna talk about any retro vidya they're currently playing?

Currently going through Tales of Destiny on the PS1. I finished Tales of Phantasia (PS1 fan translation) back in March and really enjoyed it (except for the awful encounter rate) and thought I'd start on the next game in the series. Tales of Destiny has been an interesting experience because the encounter rate feels worse and the gameplay also feels like a step down (it's an earlier engine than Phantasia) which makes it a horrible chore to play sometimes but the characters and story are really good.

I like the idea of "Swordians" in the world and find the characters to be quite endearing with some interesting backstories behind them. Learning of the histories and twists of Rutee, Mary and Leon really surprised me. It's a real shame this version didn't translate any of the skits that the characters had in Phantasia (since this is an official translation as opposed to the fan, so they probably had time constraints) since it would be nice to learn more about these characters. Skits also remind you where you're going a lot of the time, so you don't have to mindlessly walk around new locations until you figure out where to go.

The gameplay is honestly boring even when I try. I run from normal fights a majority of the time and cheese boss battles by using magic and interrupting the enemy magic spells. The encounter rate is dreadful and ruinS the game for me a lot of the time. Even with spells that cut it I feel I get into one encounter every 10-15 steps. The visible enemies you can see in some locations that run into you to start battles are even worse, one location in the game was just narrow pathways with enemies running about on them so you're forced into around 40 battles in that one tower alone. I also find the puzzles in this game to be really frustrating sometimes, one puzzle even has the wrong clues to it and I had to check a guide to find this out.

Really close to finishing the game from what I gather, I also discovered that the PS2 remake was pretty much fully translated and I could've played that version instead. A shame, but I guess I can always play it sometime down the line when I wanna give this game another playthrough.

I love the first two games so much, even if 2's ending is really weird.
They got a good voice actor for Guybrush in the remasters, he fits the role really well in my opinion.
Anyway, how appropriate, you fight like a cow!

>I love the first two games so much, even if 2's ending is really weird.
Yeah, it's a shame we'll never truly see what Big Whoop was in the end, I'm surprised Ron Gilbert was fine with just dropping that series to start his own, I get it made him millions in the process but it wouldn't sit right with me to leave a creation I made to someone else without finishing it off first.

I think after finishing Curse, it might be my favourite of the bunch. I love the idea of this absolute idiot having someone's life in his hands that he was the cause of. The first two games felt quite selfish in that Guybrush wanted to do things for himself (be a pirate, find Big Whoop) but this time around it felt a lot more interesting as there's an actual stake involved in saving Elaine and I was a bit mixed on her falling for him but I think he's earned it by the end. I adored the artstyle by around 2 hours in, it was like watching a Dreamworks movie with how it looked, it's a shame we never got a movie in the 90s, would've been cool to see. The music was fantastic and a huge step up from the Adlib stuff from the DOS versions.

I was able to work the game out without having to rely on a guide *too* much (I think around 10 times) and I was really annoyed at myself and the game for the times I did use the guide since the logic was either 90% there for me (did everything required for the gold tooth puzzle but couldn't figure out that I had to fly it out the window by inhaling helium and blowing a bubble with bubble gum the tooth is attached to) or something I would've never done (putting the portrait in front of a porthole and going on the other side to make Guybrush look like he's a family member). Still, it was a very enjoyable game even when I did have to check a guide and I was able to finish it quite quickly by checking when I was stuck instead of attempting everything possible.

I did find the game had a similar vibe to the first one with how similar the actions you take were, such as finding a crew and the insult sword fighting but that wasn't really a bad thing, rather a "oh, I'm doing this again" feeling. I think it's the funniest Monkey Island game by far and had a similar vibe to Golden-age Simpsons. I can remember laughing incredibly hard whePost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Not just playing them but finishing an annual run.
Did not bother with clearing all of the wandering troops or even topping up the potential leadership from the sole Raise Control spell for this game. At least I got Clone. Also only one dragon dwelling, only one demon dwelling, only one vampire dwelling. No chance of ever going much further past 50k score in this one. But at least 105 days on the highest difficulty is not that bad even with some mistakes like avoidable losses.
I keep hoping I will get a 3 dragon dwelling game someday again so I can claim Arech's castle without something boring like abusing Raise Control or ghosts.

I just finished MGS1.
This is an insanely ambitious game.
I was expecting something more straightforward, instead it was a schizo conspiracy where none of the actions you take are based on fact. Near everything is concealed to you.
I can see how this game revolutionized the industry more than 25 years ago.

Any PC-98 fans here? What's the best way to play PC-98 titles nowadays? Actual machine or emulator? What are some good titles to check out?

Also I heard NEC ported Unix System III and V to PC-98 but I can't find a copy of these operating systems anywhere.

Aegean Kai no Shizuku (more of a myst clone but still interesting and worth cheking out)

I'm assuming Edge of Fate and Renegades will sell just well enough that when the hammer comes down, Sony will see there's still enough interest to be profitable. It won't be Bungie anymore because Sony will have kicked the executives and taken full control, but I can imagine them seeing the potential of Destiny 3.

 No.1769

So, Marathon has been delayed. No new date was stated but they did say they planned to release it before the end of the fiscal year so Bungie execs can get their bonuses. Pretty much kills any hope I had that they had something crazy up their sleeves. Nope, it's just an extremely bare-bones extraction shooter.

Other than that, there are rumors going around that Xbox is going to be laying off up to 2000 people sometime this week. Whole industry is doing really bad right now. I think the contraction will do good in the long run though.

 No.1878

Update after 4 months

Marathon: I played in the new technical test happening right now and it is worse than before. TTK was severely shortened so getting one-shot out of nowhere is very common. Without some kind of PvE-only mode, I genuinely do not see any way this game reaches past a niche audience. Oh, did I mention people are hacking already?

Destiny: The game hits new population lows every week. Every TWAB and update is worse than the one before. They announced they are going to give returning players a metric fuck ton of free loot when Renegades launches in December. I think this is make or break for Destiny. Hopefully, Sony sees some kind of value in the franchise and keeps it around in some form.

Microsoft: Game Pass cost them billions and they are no longer doing exclusives of any kind. Their next console is rumored to be some high-end PC hybrid that will cost up to $1200. Will most likely be their last piece of hardware.

Nintendo: Switch 2 is the shit as the original, just more expensive. The games are more expensive and are hollow shells void of any substance or enjoyment. Pokemon continues to look like a N64 game.

Sony: Live service era decimated this generation but their other divisions offset the financial hit. Let's hope the PS6 isn't shit.

Valve: btfo'd CS2 schizos lmao

That's all for now. Will likely use this thread to live update talk about the Game Awards. Have a good day.

 No.1905

I slept through the Game Awards when it was obvious nothing I cared about was going to be shown and it looks like I made the right decision. Nothing of real interest was shown and the final announcement was a medieval hero shooter lmao.

See you guys probably sometime after the new year. Have a Merry Christmas!

 No.1984

The prophecy of Concord 2 has been fulfilled. Highguard launched to about 100k players and dropped to less than 1k a week later and then under 500 yesterday. The studio behind it laid off most of it's staff last week and their website went down two days ago and hasn't come back up. To top it all off, it's come out that they're secret financial backer was Tencent. Not sure at this time whether Geoff knew this or not.

Marathon has a server test coming up before it's full release on March 5th. Current sentiment on the game seems to be mixed overall.

I think it's great to admit when you've made a mistake, especially 30 years down the line. Many people would defend their bad design choices until the bitter end.

Not shmup-related, but it reminds me how the creator of Rance IV came out of retirement to release a balance patch that halved the encounter rate and doubled EXP gain. He was replaying it and realized how grindy it was, so he decided to fix it. Some Japanese devs are just built different like that.
