>How's Portugal's squad this year?
our midfield is looking mighty strong in paper: Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, João Neves, Rafael Leão, I like Trincão a lot as well and he can probably do some damage as a sub, but we don't really have someone in the same level at the front (Ronaldo, Félix, Gonçalo Ramos are good but something's off)
I'm not really worried about qualifying to the knockout stages (3rd place will probably still get you there anyway), what I am mostly worried about is the team undercutting themselves to serve Ronaldo, Martinez (our coach) is a bit of a fraud and on his way out after the tournament, and I predict both Uzbekistan and D.R. Congo will be surprises and a lot tougher than they look
>TSUUU can do work even at his age but is everyone else up to snuff?
Ronaldo's role in the squad is a quite divisive subject around here, has been for a while now:
some think he can still perform at a decent level, make a difference in key moments, and that we should be thankful to the greatest player of our nation
some think he's become a cancer that just drags down the rest of the squad, that he should just accept it's over and go away for good or at the very least just sit on the bench, and that he's just holding on by a thread so he can get his 1000 goals landmark number
I am on the second side of this myself, it's an elephant in the room situation really, it's time old friend

>some think he's become a cancer that just drags down the rest of the squad, that he should just accept it's over and go away for good or at the very least just sit on the bench

I can see that, but like you said, at least he can still contribute on key goals once in a while.
Neyney on the other hand…

We are so fucked. Like this is the first time i seen 0 hype here in Brasil over our squad. Apparently it was like this in 94 and we ended up winning, but i started in 98 so i don't know. Either way, the second we play mid-high tier Euro team, we die.

I'm honestly not sure how to fix this. If you change the rule to like centre of mass or torso + head then it becomes much harder to judge in real time (which is how the overwhelming majority of football is played. They don't have VAR in the lower leagues).
If you add in some kind of margin of error then you're just moving the line and people will still be mad when a player goes over the allowed margin by 3mm. Not to mention that the offside rule is currently working pretty well and giving further advantages to the attackers might backfire and make teams more likely to just close up instead of trying to use the offside trap.

 No.30926

>>30925
>>30918
Also, in this specific case the linesman raised his flag so this would've been offside even without VAR.
VAR was only used to confirm that the linesman was correct.

 No.30927

>>30926
One change i can think of that makes this slightly less ridiculous is for offside to start when the attacker is entirely in front of the last defender.
This wouldn't solve the 1mm you're out problem but at least you could argue the attacker is starting to get a actual advantage at that point.

 No.30928

>>30927
The Wegner rule. I think it punishes high lines too much.
Also I'm not sure about the whole "attacker had the advantage thing". I think the offside rule is written as it is to try and make sure the DEFENDER has an advantage in most cases and I believe that's generally a good thing.

You'll also notice that Euro teams are able to use this rule much better by timing their runs at the exact perfect moment while Sudacas and Africans get it wrong. There is clearly a certain amount of skill in getting this right and it should be rewarded.

 No.30929

>>30927
>>30928
I'm not even sure how the current rule operates so i might be saying something stupid but, i think just having it be "If heel of the foot of the attacking player is ahead of defender's feet, it's offside"

meaning the guy was in full intent of running ahead

 No.30930

>>30929
The current rule is very simple. Any bodypart that can legally play the ball must be behind the 2nd to last defender.
>If heel of the foot of the attacking player is ahead of defender's feet, it's offside
And how the fuck is a linesman supposed to see that? Remember, VAR Is only used in the top leagues and you don't want your 3rd league operating on a different rule set from the top league.
>but linesmen can't see perfectly even under the current rule
Yes, but they at least know exactly what they're looking for. They'll get it wrong by a few cm here and there but there's no reason to make their job even harder by introducing overcomplicated rules.

I'll take your word for it as i only follow the sport every 2 years with the euros/world cup but i get frustrated every time about some aspects.
Another problem imo is how easily penalties are given when you consider they are basically free goals and usually 0-3 goals are scored in a game.
At the very least they should allow the keeper to move freely (within reason) instead of calling it a faul if he moves a muscle 1 second too early.

Here's a helpful diagram. Elite level players often don't try to push up right to the offside line and instead hang back a bit and then time their run so they're at full sprint by the time the ball is kicked. Since arms don't count for offside they can remain onside and they actually get an advantage over the defender by timing it perfectly. Good teams also practice these situations and good team chemistry allows players to delay or speed up the kick for the pass to go along with the run.

Impatient players try to be as close as possible to the goal and sometimes get called offside even when their back is turned towards the goal when the ball is kicked.

Ultimately this is a skill that players and teams can learn and they should be rewarded for it.

Brazil looked kinda weak but it was never all that close. Japan are mental midgets who fall apart as soon as they reach the knockout stages.

I think Norway will be a much tougher match for Brazil, especially if their main strategy is going to be spamming crosses into the box. That works great against Japanese midgets but it probably won't work so well against Norwegian ogres.

 No.30996

>>30995
Our country has a long history of sucking major dick to teams that close themselves up and go on counter attacks.
Brasil always has top tier attack but dogshit defenses, it depends if that's something Norway will do, which they might, since Haaland can always convert a counter attack well enough.

 No.30997

>>30996
True, but it was the other way around this game. Japan was (relatively) open in the first half and played well.
Then they pussied out and parked the bus in the 2nd half and lost.
I think Brazil can deal with teams that straight up park the bus and leave 10 men in the box, it can't deal with teams that press aggressively.

quick thoughts so far regarding the first KO round
CAF teams seriously need to get their shit together in the final minutes of their matches in the future, but it's refreshing to see them perform well overall when compared to say AFC
lol Germany
France looks unstoppable once again, their performance from 2018 onwards has been tippy top stuff, they might mirror Brazil 1994-2002 (win, loss in the final, win)
Morocco look strong again, but marginally worse than 2022 maybe?
Belgium is seriously painful to watch now after their golden generation failed to win anything, USA might have a decent chance to get them
Norway was fun to watch but France is a mountain too big to climb I reckon
Brazil needs to get over their anxiety, I believe they will only improve from now on, very sad for Japan getting an early exit
England looks to be in big trouble if Kane happens to underperform in one of the next matches
Spain had a walk in the park

and now Portugal x Croatia, which has the potential for a pretty good match, one of the old guys (Luka or Modric) is going home tonight which is always sad
personally I'll be happy if the match doesn't make me fall asleep in the couch and/or doesn't go to extra time (game starts at midnight and tomorrow is a work day)

Something I feel is a fun fact is that beating Ecuador was basically obligatory for us, there's real diplomatic emnity due to tarrifs and other boring stuff, so it got a little heated there. Had we lost at our maximum stage it would've been one of those national traumas, it's good that the nerves got to them first.

>>31060
I don't doubt they've got the english team on something to help decrease the effects of altitude (like oxygen pills and stuff), obviously it's hard to tell just off of social media but even if the english are known for screwing up at vital moments, so are we, so there's nerves on our part too. France just steamrolls every team they face this tournament

The last 10 minutes of the first half were good.
England can still win if they play this right.

 No.31311

Apparently the ball hit a cable just before England scored the 1-1. When that happened it should have been declared a dead ball according to the rules.
Can we please just have a normal match for once.

There was a replay showing the sensor, and nothing was shown to have touched the ball. I don't know if that could be also be called rigged.

Well, the whole tournament has been sketchy, so it's difficult not to suspect everything.

I would not be shocked if FIFA is forcing its hand to get the bigger Stars more moments in the tournament for better ratings. These games have been so suspicious.
