Everyone has been sandbagging so far, the bags will come off now.
Russell and Verstappen are the favorites to win the drivers' championship
Aston Martin will limit the number of laps in the upcoming races to prevent possible engine failure
Alonso and Stroll risk possible nerve damage due to vibrations in the car caused by the engine
McLaren, Alpine and Williams will get their hands on the latest race-spec Mercedes power unit for the first time in Australia
Pirelli tyre testing in Bahrain has been cancelled, WEC won't have their opening race, F1 Qatar and Saudi races aren't yet confirmed to be cancelled

Merc domination as everyone expected. Ferrari about the same shit as last year.
Audi possibly fighting with ToroRosso for midfield kinghood. I'm really curious how welt BORT would do had his engine not died there.

welcome back 2014, and the fastest lap was roughly 3.5s slower than last season, obviously we can't properly compare a last year of regs vs the first year of new regs, but it's very grim
Kimi went out on what was a likely damaged chassis, slid all over the place, and still dabbed all over the rest of the grid, they are still hiding power too for sure
McLaren will need some time to take full advantage of it but they'll get up there eventually as well

>Lewis Hamilton expressed concern over Mercedes' engine advantage after their dominant performance in Melbourne qualifying. Speaking to media, Hamilton remarked:
>“I don't understand it exactly. They didn't show that they could turn it up in testing and now they've got this extra power from somewhere and we need to understand what that is. I hope it's not this compression ratio thing, hopefully it's just pure power and we've got to do a better job.”
>“If it is the compression ratio [creating this performance gap] then I'll be disappointed that the FIA have allowed that to be the case. It's not to the book, and I'll be pushing my team to do the same thing so we can get more power.”
>The FIA plans to control the compression ratio in both cold and hot conditions from 1 June. However, Hamilton is skeptical about the timing:
>“If they have a few months of that, then the season's done – I mean, not done, but seven races, a few months, you lose a lot of points with a second behind in quali.”

On another note, Montoya has a bit contrarian opinion on the new regs, the summary is
>drivers shouldn't bite the hand that feeds them
>drivers shouldn't compare f1 to mario kart it's disrespectful, if they don't like it they should quit if they really mean it
>people have accepted DRS for 15 years, now they should accept the new regs
>F1, commentators and drivers aren't doing a good job at understanding and explaining the regs, this confuses people and make them dislike it
>the teams need to use more strategies for racing using the battery deployment, every team is sticking to the same strat.
On Williams

What to this day that i still don't understand.
Whats the point of Formula E then?
I assumed it was there to be what Formula 1 was to regular cars, improve Batteries and Electric cars.
Why is F1 even trying on that department? Go for full combustion engines and use gas, Theres already 10 billion Saudi oil companies banking this shit already. I doubt the planet will die if 22 cars every 1-2 weeks run a few laps in a circuit.
Hell they even have more nature friendly fuels now no?
No.29875
>>29874>Why is F1 even trying on that department?A shitton of virtue signalling, that's all there is to it.
And I don't mean from FOM or FIA's side, since both have stated that thanks to synthetic fuels they can look into switching to non-hybrid or light-hybrid (like KERS) in the future, I mean from the manufacturers' side, for example Honda was refusing to join if the hybrid system didn't have a major contribution towards the total power, and iirc Audi had stated something similar as well.
No.29876
>>29874Aside form what Italybro said, there is also political pressure. The EU is moving towards banning ICE all together on the longer term.
Some GP get government subsidies that they would no doubt lose if F1 would say fuck it we're going back to fossil fuels.

Article on the reasons these new rules are what they are.
https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/why-f1-has-ended-up-with-rules-that-so-many-hate/One of the reasons mentioned i had not considered is the fear that F1 could end up with only Mercedes and Ferrari as engine suppliers. Before RBR decided to build their own engines it looked like both Honda and Renault where on their way out with nobody to replace them.
The new engine suppliers wanted a bigger battery so they can use F1 to market their EV to young people. (as if they can afford them)
No.29879
>>29878I haven't read the full article but, why would it even matter if there are only 2 or 3 engine suppliers?
In theory if everybody makes their own engine you could have anyone in the top field. In reality that doesn't happen, either the team that makes the engine is way ahead of the teams they supply or the reverse.
Alternatively you have the current Honda/Audi situation where the engine is so bad they are not even close to competitive (Audi gets somewhat of a pass).
24/25 and 10-13 are good examples of customer teams being ahead of the supplier team, proving that the rest of the car is equally important.
No.29881
>>29879You can see this season that Mercedes has a big advantage supplying multiple teams with their engines. They get the data from all those engines for themselves and don't share it with the costumer teams. That's one of the reasons why they have such a big headstart on Mclaren.
It also gives you political power when it comes to voting for certain rule changes.
This new regulation is said to lean much more on the engine vs aerodynamics compared to those seasons you mentioned, same in the previous era of merc domination.
It would be great for the sport if Audi/RBR and later CAD can get their shit together on the PU side.
I guess we can can only hope Mclaren will get on top of the merc engine in time and they've shown to have it in them to beat Mercedes on aero.
Doubt that will be this year though.
