 No.805

We are the last bastions of classical /lum/ culture, such as the emperors in Constantinople were after the west was overrun by barbarians (Ran spammer & nippleschizo). We owe it to our illustrious ancestors to create OC and spread /lum/ culture far and wide so that we may be able to recapture the magic of 2020!

I consider the average lumgooner barbarians. The sophisticated and well mannered Benten enthusiast tend to enhance cultural norms. Post more Benten.

Indeed, btw I’m about to watch this show for the first time very soon so I’ll eventually be in the same boat as you fellas quite soon. I’ve watched plenty of older anime already, I think it’s finally about time I get to this iconic show

 No.815

>>814
Update: I’m four episodes in, I already love it, it’s incredibly eccentric and just flat out wild even from the very start, right now I’m most looking forward to the rest of the main cast being introduced, I’m absolutely NOT binging this, gonna take my time wand enjoy this incredibly almost near loony tunes leveled series to the finest.

 No.816

>>815
The wild thing is, I've been doing recaps of the show for a while; the early episodes are so unbelievably hectic and deranged and they're the weak part of UY, it gets so much better.

 No.817

That’s what I’ve been expecting, I already know it’s gonna get better and I’m really looking forward to that

 No.818

It takes like 40 to 50 episodes for it to actually get good. Then it drops off on the 106th episode.

Meaning?

Oh so that’s when the studios switch to deen. Non other less it’s probably better than the earlier episodes which were already quite good already

 No.821

Ultimately I’ve decided to make my own judgement on this, i rarely laugh hard at anime multiple different times but this cracked me up so much I think it’s safe to say I’ll enjoy the rest of the series.

> the earlier episodes which were already quite good already

I would disagree with you right there. I don't think the earlier episodes are good at all. They're between below average to ok in terms of writing, art direction, comedy, and overall pacing, but I can't completely blame Oshii for that one, he was completely new to it. By episode 10, it starts to sharpen up a bit, but it takes a massive nose dive in quality in between episodes 26 and 29 (including episode 31).

 No.823

>>822
Thats funny, I’m actually just a few episodes closer to those particular ones.

Alright now that I’m 66 episodes in I’ve pretty much now know much of the main cast, it’s absolutely great and funny. Sometime ago I posted this in /cel/ but now I know more of these characters, I’ll think about how ill deal with them on a hypothetical 8/10 hour flight
1: The zone where Lum’s stormtroopers keep telling me on how beautiful she is trying to “increase their ranks” and it’s all noise, ryuunosuke gives me a look of pity the entire time
2: Not much better but hey it’s a window seat, unfortunately cherry is right behind me
3:A real silent ride due to sitting next to a giant cat, though he’s overprotective over something warm, I can smell Sakura from the back, hopefully she doesn’t get the wrong idea it’s completely unintentional.
4: Window seat but some dude throughout the ride is explaining how I should be a good example to his “son” (doesn’t take long for me to realize he’s a she), big fight breaks out, someone behind me kicks my seat really fucking hard telling us to shut up.
5:Mendo might unintentionally view me as some kind of “challange” to shinobu, maybe just chat on their relationship.
6:Ran for whatever reason is trying to be all nice, talk is all right until she starts telling about her childhood history about her bestie, her self proclaimed “spouse” is weird
7: Hell, it’s seat swapping the entire time and the fear of a lightning strike, I think there’s an extra passenger on here some child or something.
8:Best possible seating

Sorry but /pinoko/ is our queen now. /lum/ is dead.

YOU TAKE THAT BACK RIGHT NOW

 No.828

/lum/ isn't even as good as Takahashi's later works. I propose we rename /lum/ to /ranma/ or /mao/ because these series are infinitely better than UY.

 No.832

It’s me again, for my watch through I just finished the very famous 2nd movie, definitely was a trip let me tell you but still a very fascinating movie as well, mamoru oshi’s last hurrah for the series in general as well. As for my general thoughts on reaching the halfway point, I absolutely love this series, incredibly shocking I didn’t watch this previously, although I was already very well aware of it but I can already see why it’s so beloved. Will probably check back here once I finish the television series, ova’s and final fifth movie, hear the sixth one has very mixed reception but still might check it out so I could at least complete everything. Later

 No.833

>>832
The 2nd movie is a rather prudish attempt at a philosophical art film. Oshii can't write to save himself. He treats his viewers as if they were stupid and has to spoon them the entire plot near the beginning of the film as if it were too complex for them to understand what's going on. Story wise, a terrible piece. Paragraphs upon paragraphs of pseudo-intellectual fluff. Oshii does not know the meaning of show not tell. And all this movie does is tell. 6 out of 10. The 5th movie did better.

 No.834

Of all of Takahashi's work, I feel like I like Urusei Yatsura the least. The artwork is a little rough. The gags are good but lack a lot of the polish and finesse of her later work. A lot of it doesn't connect with me. I don't really like any of the characters or root for them, except maybe Shinobu. They are all assholes. Even Lum is a bitch until she calms down later.

 No.835

>>833
Late response but it was pretty fine regardless. Not really sure if I want to see the 3rd film since I read the synopsis, not really my type but I’ll check out the 4th. Also I’ve enjoyed this series so much that I even went as far as buying the blu rays of the entire television series(and OVA set), planning to do the same with the 5th movie at some point

 No.837

>>833
Oshii directed angel's egg and ghost in the shell, both widely known films that are considered jewels in the sci-fi anime genre rather than anything Takahashi tried with Urusei despite her claiming to be a fan of scifi first.

 No.838

>>837
I'll be honest. I've only ever seen his early work. He might've improved his work after UY. Rumiko's work just was never good to begin with, and trying to fix it the way he did only made it pretentious.

 No.845

>>835
Finally finished the television series, really fun, enough for me to buy most of the series, also saw the fourth movie and 2008 rumic world special that adapted the swim obstacle course. As for episodes that really got me laughing hard the most they were the love catch ball episode, the one where the school ate intoxicated mushrooms, the the anger of oyuki, the second appearance of the spice trio, the one where the flowers spread rumors, and some otherwise. Still have the ova’s and three remaining movies left to cover with the finale being saved for last

Meant some others

 No.1717

Finished the ova’s yesterday and prior to going over them the 6th movie and today finally got over it to watch the 3rd film for completion purposes, all that’s left now is the final chapter and I’ll be finally finished

According to Oshii and others, the earliest episodes were extremely rushed, and made with very low budget. A lot of people start with the earliest eps, and are like "wtf is this tripe?" when it's very crude, low budget, and seems like 70s trash. When they got more budget, and more time, that is when the adaption starts to shine.

>>832
The manga is more consistent. Likewise takes a bit to get into the groove of storytelling but the quality is more consistent even if the anime has some really nice highs. Episode 151 and Movie 4 are re-treads of Beautiful Dreamer, and don't quite capture the same magic.

For what to do next: UY is the focal point and you can go in other directions. You can continue Rumiko, or you can actually go to Oshii's works. His films Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor 1-2, are more akin to Beautiful Dreamer in terms of tone and setting. There's also Tarkovsky, who made the films that inspired Oshii, such as Solaris and Stalker.

Other UY staff left to make Project A-Ko, and you can really see it. The setting is basically Tomobiki high school but with a lto more elements added to it. A lot of the other UY staff went with Oshii and made Patlabor tv series and manga which is very much retreading Rumiko's style.

Then there's the wannabe Rumic works like Orange Road.

I watched Solaris last year and while I don't like Oshii's stuff, I really liked Solaris.

 No.1749

Thanks, I’ve already seen patlabor the television series and it’s ova follow-up that wrapped up the griffon arc(mecha is one of my specialties) and especially all five project a-ko installments (old school anime is another specialty lol). That specific series is charming as hell and I think towards the end of the anime’s run a few of the characters even appear as background cameos before the movie even debuted lol. As to what to check our next, most certainly Ranma 1/2. I’m keeping my expectations for this show different for this because I hear it gets really bonkers at some point

 No.1754

>>1749
Finally finished the last movie, and with that the franchise itself. Maybe I’ll take a look at the original manga stories but with that I’m now in the same boat as the rest of the fan base. Wonderful story and a new favorite series in general, I don’t think I’m ever gonna forget the first ending song, it’s already cemented in my mind as iconic.

A LOT of manga chapters never got adapted, as the anime ended about 2/3 of the way through the show, so there was only a trickle of important stories that got adapted into OVA or films. A lot of hte anime adaptions are also wildly different from the manga counterparts that they might as well be original episodes.

But on the other hand: a lot of things get expanded upon. This is like a panel in the original and skating becomes one of Lum's "things" in the anime run but gets dropped once Studio Deen takes over.

Her hobby is jogging in the manga pretty consistently. This is Heian era Lum, but we see Lum jogging fairly frequently in random chapters.

 No.1766

>>1762
Yes, jogging becomes her "thing" in the Studio Deen era too. Most famously shown in the Lum the Forever opening credits.
