Oshii used Mendo as a vector for his militerism fetish while the comic merely had him have some glasses wearing bodyguards. Did he go too far? The show makes Mendo a tad bit more menacing than perhaps Rumiko had intended. The two-parter where they're used by Mendo to try to thwart Atru from getting Lum back makes Mendo a bit of a Bond villain.

The Mendo Army: Good or bad? It was a nice excuse to see various bits of German hardware from the Wehrmacht or Bundeswehr from MP40s, Leopard 1A5. It basically vanishes after Oshii leaves.

I don't think Rumiko meant for Mendo to be a bad guy - he's a mirror of Ataru with similar flaws and pettiness, but deep down is not a bad guy. He makes a nice rival for Ataru.

Rumiko was clearly mining adaptions for ideas though and then canonizing them. Mendo gets a prized tank that Asuka then promptly destroys. The bunny-boy storyline repeats story beats from Beautiful Dreamer entirely, including being in a fantasy world where Ataru gets his dream of a harem fufilled but it doesn't bring him happiness so he decides he needs Lum after all. The final storyline is a mish-mash of ideas from movies 1-4. Final Chapter film seems less impactful to anime fans since we've seen this storyline play out 4 times already, with Only You being the main inspiration.

So you can't say innocent little Angle Rumiko got her works abused by mean old animation team when she was fine stealing ideas and canonizing them as needed.

Fantasy world of dreams was already in UY and naturally any story where Ataru gives up on the harem and goes for Lum would indulge in that desire. Rumiko built on top of her work organically so it naturally would resemble some aspects that the anime also worked up to. The other concepts "stolen" are basic bitch things like alien kidnapping.

The Mendo family having a tank and it getting comically destroyed is a natural extension from him getting dropped off at school in a gigantic military helicopter. His taskforce being fascists and the school students being WW2 otaku is not.

She did not canonize anything from the UY anime. Having some things that touch upon similar ideas and themes is natural.

>His taskforce being fascists and the school students being WW2 otaku is not.
Those are nazis, and plenty of anime at the time was using ww2 themes, Dragon Ball had the red ribbon army too..friendly reminder they were part of the axis.
Rumiko can show Aliens wanting to take over humanity but a rich guy that has a military aeshetic is too much?

 No.1708

Making the rich guy have a nazi aesthetic is too much, yeah. Rumiko never did that. Aliens conquering humanity by trial via tag is completely tame.

I'm not about censoring it though. And it isn't like I think you can't include references to Nazis in a comedic fashion. I just don't think you should do it to someone else's work. Ultimately, it is simply the biggest nitpick in regards to the changes the anime had done.

Rumiko herself only went on record about not liking the fumi-e joke in the anime. I guess she didn't enjoy a joke that references the torture or murder of a persecuted class in Japanese history.

"Takahashi: There was once an anime episode called "Miss Tomobiki Contest" in Urusei Yatsura. I was like, "Gah!" at that one…

Hirai: They really messed things up, huh? (laughs)

Takahashi: That was a real eye-opener. What was also a bit of a shocking detail was that they had the characters walk across a fumi-e. I don't understand the nerve of that. If the film was good, I would be proud of it, and if it was bad, I would be angry. I don't think of it as the work of a single director. However, if possible, I would like you to take care of the characters."

Chiming in to say that I'm surprised that more anons here don't periodically use something akin to an actual username for posts. Like, I'm the Lum's Stormtrooper guy but only about 20% of the time when I post, do I bother to type in my username and password

Oh, also you can tell who is who from their filenames

Rule of funny: Mendo army is hilarious. They are dead serious, and the idea of Mendo constructing such a vast, well organized and equipped army, with apparently deathly loyal members, entirely for petty bullshit is a laugh riot. They do effectively NOTHING.

>Rumiko could have come up with this originally therefore she did!

But she didn't. We know she saw the films and then elements almost identical to them start showing up in the manga. It's not really hard to think of it as her liking some parts, and then doing her own spin on them.

Ataru's harem being the most obvious, with making it an alternate future where Lum sees it as offensive enough to outright leave Ataru. That's something she's NEVER done and one of her defining traits is utter total faith in Ataru despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. So she takes a scenario from the films, integrates it into the manga, and puts her own spin on it.

Anime-Mendo has a bit more of an edge than might be intended by Rumiko. he's meant to be a bit of a hot-head goof, whom in the moment will draw his sword on Ataru because he finds him so offensive and because he's a samurai traditionalist. Manga Mendo would probably not have shooting targets with Ataru simply because he would think thinking about him on off-hours is beneath him.

The animation team seems to have just loved Mendo though, giving him all these scenes and events. They kind of make him the "cool guy" that Rumiko is partially mocking to begin with. Guys just can't help themselves.

 No.2075

>>2064
I agree entirely. Sometimes people talk about Mendo's noble qualities and I can tell, they are approaching it from the anime. Not that I think Rumiko dislikes Mendo, but she's pretty clear that his better qualities are ultimately affectations, even if he won't fuck outside the school in a cheesy pleasure dome.

 No.2077

>>2075
I think it's just basic writing where you need foils. He overlaps with Lum and Ataru as a character. He is normally well meaning and polite like Lum, but Ataru angers him and you can see his sword strikes as similar to Lum's lightning. And like Ataru, he's a wannabe lady's man virgin.

Mendo has some noble qualities, as well as selfish and vain ones, so it's not entirely affectations. He will do the right thing when pressed, and would never hurt a woman. He's Ataru with pretentions of class.
