I don't want people knowing I'm into manga, anime, and VNs. Its embarrassing and shameful. When I look at the types of people into this stuff its teen girls who watch lousy anime and wear loose socks or the most insufferable types of mainstream people and nerds. My fear of embarrassment leads to me never making any friends and a feeling of self-inflicted guilt.

No matter how I look at it anime and manga seems like immoral cultural fast food. Girls in skimpy outfits, moron teenagers, depraved behavior, overly sexual, and writing that's just embarrassing. Its dirty, ungodly stuff. Its hard to sell anyone who doesn't watch it already on the idea that there's really good stuff out there, they automatically assume your some kind of dwap who likes Strike Witches and keeps a maid outfit in his closet. I don't wanna be associated with people like that but then I'm left with nobody to talk to.

The self hatred you display in your post reeks of someone who spends too much time on social media.
Either admit you like Otaku media to yourself, including the "embarrassing" stuff or drop it all together and go watch sports or something.

I know what you mean. I've never really been ae to talk about it with other persons, though in my case it's because everyone is seemingly only ever into battle shoenen, a very dull and mindless genre. I had the same issue with superheros growing up, I suppose they're basically thr same thing but super hero movies are so bad nowadays you have to look elsewhere if you want something like it. The degeneracy of much anime is somehow normalized but also shameful to talk about. For example I wish I didn't like NGE with how sexual it is, and the one chance I had to actually talk about it I instictually reacted with disgust. I basically just read old books nowadays and despair of ever meeting anyone who I can talk to about them, might as well if I want to escape degeneracy. wap shit is for online life only.

I think a lot of this stuff is just in my head and me not being able to cope being aligned with a tribe with a bad image.

>I wish I didn't like NGE with how sexual it is, and the one chance I had to actually talk about it I instictually reacted with disgust.
Well yeah I get this feeling too. I like stuff but I don't like it. I can't deny something is good but hate how degenerate and misogynistic it is. Other times I give it a pass.

It sounds like you don't want to be aligned with a crowd based on the stereotypes outsiders have of them. One way to deal with this is to ask how fair those stereotypes are. A problem with this is that if you hang out in online spaces you will find many so called otaku lean into the image and that's why we see promotion of being an a social loner, a NEET, or someone hostile to normals. I've always wondered if the idea of otaku as its understood on the gaijin side of the net is not accurate to how Japanese understand it, and maybe otaku culture is just a fiction? Don't feel like you need to wear a uniform simply because you like certain things. Just because you are into manga or anime doesn't mean you have to like or defend all of it. You are probably Worrying to much. People probably don't assume stuff about you.

I get this feeling too. I don't know why.

If you ask me, you're thinking way too hard about these things. If you're never pick a side, sure you'll never make any enemies, but you'll never really make any friends either. You not having any friends is honestly all on you.

>>7063
I think this guy has the right idea, if you like otaku stuff, you should just embrace that stuff! Love it with all of your heart, or forget about it.

BUT if you STILL wanna be a fence sitter about this kind of thing, then normies these days already have a pretty decent enough knowledge of anime, while also calling anything with so much as a panty shot a "gooner show". You'll probably be able to get along fairly well with this kind of person.

 No.7075

I can't imagine what sort of thinking you'd have to engage with in order to escape that mentality but I'd get bored of it very quickly. Like, people who don't like anime can sometimes have sincerely good taste on other subjects and find anime enjoyers to be performative, because in some sense liking anime requires an appreciation or tolerance of simplicity/abstractions and that can feel performative for those who can navigate complex emotions intelligently, but the majority of the time their opinions are informed by, aimed to answwr to, their perception of what they think other people like. Similar to you. It's just a maze with no certainties beyond your belief that people care. So, what, you enjoy thinking about other people's opinion about you and want them to think about you positively, but you trap yourself into making yourself unhappy because you aren't interested in the things people you think highly of are interested in since you don't value people like yourself at all. What can you do? Actually, you just need to find the seedlings that lead to you developing an interest in other things. It's inevitably going to be about your other, undesired interests, and you might learn why you aren't interested in other things in the process.

>if you like otaku stuff, you should just embrace that stuff! Love it with all of your heart, or forget about it.
That can lead to pressure too. Imagine forcing yourself to like stuff simply because other otaku are into it. I doubt actual Japanese otaku lovingly embrace all so called otaku media. Its not an all or nothing thing. Its fine to like somethings and not others and forcing yourself to embrace everything is a fast track to loosing interest in all of it.

Looking at the world in an otaku va normalfren way is also probably not very healthy either.

 No.7078

What it really comes down to is that if you're a prude or can't separate fiction from reality otaku media is not for you.
You either stop consuming it or get a job at a creditcard company and try to ruin it for everyone else.

I know what you mean, I think. I remember trying to talk to this non-wapish person about an anime I liked, I mentioned not wanting to talk about it around kids who were there at the time, and the person was chiding me pretty hard for being into raunchy stuff like that and I had to explain to them I was thinking about a character in the series killing themselves. It struck me as really odd, because I've put myself in this position where I forget horny anime/manga like that even exist because I don't interact with that beyond the weird one-off jokes some series have (like that cat from Soul Eater), that's not what I'm attracted to the medium for. But then, when I do find other waps, they too assume I mean something I don't in that kind of way when "adult matters" are brought up. I think the outsiders have stereotyped me, but then everyone I talk to about it seems to fit the stereotype, so I have no companion on either side of the issue. It's very alienating. It makes me feel dreadfully alone in my interests. I try to talk about how this romance exemplifies the fear I feel when being vulnerable, or how this gritty underground story shows the hearts of darkness we all try to hide, or how this racing story shows that it's okay for our passions to be perennial, but it seems incomprehensible to non-waps and waps alike that I would be into this stuff for any reason other than extreme titillation, sexual or otherwise. I'm sorry I have no solace for you; there really is no one to talk to about this kind of stuff, you're spot-on. I cope by trying to dive ever deeper into the anime/manga I interact with, by posturing as some kind of keeper of it, so you could perhaps try that, but then maybe that's not healthy…

The comparison to superheroes is true too; I've come to the conclusion that battle shonen is the Japanese equivalent of superhero movies. They share the same perks within the media and within their audiences. Also like superheros, there are meaningful and impactful stories beyond those things, but the idea of really being into that seems ridiculous to everyone else. Anime seems worse though; at least people at large generally agree that Watchmen is great. This also relates to being pressed by both sides; a non-wap is going to assume I just want some weird exotic stuff thrown in to my good guys pwning the bad guys epic style indulgence, but then a wap will also wonder what I even like the medium for if watching power progression and oggling at awesome fight scenes isn't all that interesting to me. I can never seem to make anyone believe it could possibly be something more than that.
Also, how old is an old book? I've been trying to read more canonized books recently; I claim to be a lover of old books, but then I'm a bit of a poser because I haven't read many, in fact very few older than the early twentieth century. You can talk to me about it maybe.

Ueaht's not like I never ejoyed the super hero movies or comics I read as a kid, I just found tropes lije the costumes or secret identities silly. I also read through all of Dragon Ball and HxH (after watching the anime, which I liked enough to read the manga), they both served as series I could get through without much thought or too much emotion, which is what I wanted after going through too many heavy series like NGE or Haibane Renmei (cannot recomend highly enough by the way). But it did cause me to decide while I liked both to varying degrees over their long runtime they weren't for me. I feel like I've done my diligence with both genres to decide I don't need to dig deeper anymore and can ignore recommendations from them.

I'm a poser too, I buy way more books than I read. I get them from antique shops and so don't bother to check how old they are in specific, but generally they'll be at least fifty years old. Unfortunately my attention span has been raped by youtube and so I can usually only get thirty minutes of reading in at a time. I'm going through a good short story collection now called Twice Told Tales that's great for this fact, as that's about how long one story takes me. I posted about it in /lit/ and would love to see the board more active. It's from the early 20th centry itself and can be found in full online easily (I hate reading books on computers or phones but if you can do it it's so easy to find things ti read) if you want to join me over there, I'd love to talk about it with someone who's also read it, as opposed to talking at someone who's only politely listening. That board in general needa more activity.

Otaku culture feels like its gone off the rails. Instead of shows with fan service, we now have shows that are just fan service. The mainstreaming of anime has created a generic Japanese culture fan that's engagement with the material is extremely surface level. Nobody discusses anything they watch with detail. No speculation about what the backstory is or the world. There's no creativity involved from the fan side now. Its just casual superficial consumption where there's a 2D girl for everyone and the regurgitation of the same worthless shit. Its girl collecting and really that makes people no better than the normalfrens that watch baywatch. Like it really does feel that people are no longer actually fans of any series in a deep way and they consume stuff for the sake of it. Really not different to porn addiction. You look at these people and they are embarrassing. It would be nice to talk to someone about an anime or manga they actually liked, that they are passionate about discussing, that can speculate on the lore or say something meaningful about it. I guess you kinda still have that with Touhou and even that's stale, but what else? Long gone are the days when there was any sense of community built around something.

I'm just frustrated so this is obviously a rant that will seem unfair to some. I get it, you can always point to exceptions sure, but take the average anime fan today and don't tell me you don't feel slightly embarrassed. They are just like TV addicts in the 90s and 2000s consuming their regular dose of trash tv.

It feels like Touhou or EVA or Hatsune Miku are popular because they are popular. People pretend to like them or force themselves to because that is what is expected to fit in. In fact people love to pretend they hate EVA or say EVA is overrated just to fit in with the cool kids.

I think it's kinda silly to be so concerned with appearing respectable to the kind of people who dismiss entire mediums based on their own shallow preconceived notions. Boring people do that shit with everything, they aren't worth your time.
