Cyberspace is overstimulating. Internet capable digital devices give us a constant stream of titillating content (music, video, porn, games, chat, news) which overwhelm our brains and deprive us of rest. In this relentless electric environment we always need to watch something, see what others are posting, and have an opinion, otherwise we feel chronically bored and empty. The cognitive overload leaves us to mentally exhausted to enjoy the things we genuinely like. I'm sure everyone knows the feeling of hours aimlessly surfing to try to plug that irritable, bored, empty feeling while not feeling like doing something actually worthwhile.

How to deal with this problem? Cutting out all digital devices is sensible but not practical for most people.

Is it the music and games themselves that are to blame? I play a lot of games and listen to a ton of music, but I haven’t felt overstimulated online since I blocked all the large social media sites that use algorithms to mind break you, turning you into their own personal digital cattle that they milk for data.

We've had these things before but they didn't cause the same issue. Its how almost all devices are now capable of streaming multiple types of content over the internet which offers us instantaneous access to everything, everywhere, all at one. These services have an interest in milking your attention, and so the content is designed for that purpose and has become more and more attention grabbing. So we see music and games becoming purposely more addictive than they were in the past, not because they are so fun that you want to keep on playing, but because they are designed to give quick dopamine hits and mine your attention, gacha titles, in browser notifications, simpler song structures are all good examples.

Do something painful until you're able to reorient your sense of pleasure. Try thinking about a subject and learn how to enjoy the process of learning. Count the grains of sand called daily habits and see what you would benefit from repeating endlessly. To me it only feels like a problem when I can no longer see a path ahead. There's no need to generalize a solution or even contemplate what the problem may be for others, that only dilutes what the actual problem as you experience it.

i have been using an mp3 player filled up with pirated music to keep me stimulated while going on bike rides and long walks this year, its been a great method of sorta detoxing and also getting exercise outdoors, which makes me feel less guilty abt fucking around on the puter when i want to. switching to linux for my daily driver OS has also changed the feel of my personal computing experience to be much less corporate and more personal feeling. getting off social media and disabling/blocking all short form content is probably the easiest thing anyone can do tbh
