Why not remake one of the older games nobody has actually played yet?

I don't care for EoSD but the possibility of a followup PCB remake brings me joy and hope for a better tomorrow.

The music will not be as good. I like the charm of older Touhou artwork too, the less samey standard anime character designs. This game will mostly be the same, have remixed music, have a modern redesign for the characters, same basic story etc. like metal gear triangle.

Plus side, more Rumia. This will be her second official game? Hopefully she eats someone.

They will not make as much money. They know nobody has played anything before EoSD,so they are gonna milk us all for $$$.

It's cool and everything but there's certain anxieties about it that I have that I haven't seen others voice (man the state of touhou discussion elsewhere is just disappointing)

The sort of horrifying thing to me is that it'll be replacing the game in its original state in the minds of all the new fans that will play it (with all its eccentrities like the fact that you only get auto pick up at max power and the like, or the low resolution of the character portraits, or how dorky the graphic design is. On that point, how people might think that the "remastered" music replaces the original which is the most scary part.) but in the end, it's probably fine. Most people struggled to get a working version that didn't go at 9000 FPS anyways and apparently there will be a rebuilt version of the original game, which we can hope manages to properly replicate it.
If they do proceed to do 7, 7.5, 8, and 9, which already seems likely. It does refire that worry in me, since those games are easier to get working on a modern machine and thus have less of a barrier, and 7 specially since to me it's a very special game from its aesthethic and quirks (and from the fact it's the game I'm most nostalgic on), in the end, it goes back to this anxiety of the originals getting replaced in the conciousness and a certain fear that others won't engage with them and appreciate them on their own terms.

Well, I'm just rambling since I needed a place to express my worries. I already feel more calm and I'm picking my hopes back up, I think it'll be good if it gets people to properly engage with the games in an earnest way and if it gets them to engage with the rest of the franchise which are far more available on their own.

It seems that they aren't going to be redesigns but just redrawn from the original artwork, just for a higher resolution, and the translations seem to be tasked upon by known translators and all. That said, we're probably heading for another few years of EoSD dominance in fanart, which will be a bit annoying

If only. IaMP is severely underrated. A port with rollback and in-game matchmaking would be a godsend.

I am concerned too, but for different reasons. I am sure the original will still have its place, probably with a more niche status like the PC98 games.

I am sorry for selling out, but I made a post on my website regarding my concerns + some info: https://venus-territory.nekoweb.org/projects/blog/11-06-2026
And pardon me if the formatting is weird, I am not used to image boards.

I am especially concerned about the consequences this remake will bring long term. I got insider confirmation that translators signed a contract and an NDA. They are not getting paid and they can't disclose they are not getting paid.
It is possible many of them are now trapped in a contract loop.
Many people are also trying to hide the fact that the game used code from GensokyoClub's decompilation.
I will not say names, but the person in charge of this is irresponsible. You can find the name easily, because he failed to do basic cleanup of his name, even after he broke his NDA while being in charge of many important things inside the remake.
I have evidence that I tried to help him do damage control (among many other things), but he left me on read for days, even after I modified my blog in order to be more neutral and with the goal to protect his name. I am not sharing sources on many of my claims in order to protect that individual, to the detriment of my post and credibility.
I got tired of being nice.

Blame and people drama aside, what concerns me is having people in the industry use this to undermine the rights of translators. Toby Fox could use this to add translations without rewarding the translators and that would scale into becoming core part of game development.

What else will happen if such lousy people are in charge? We don't know but I am concerned. The figure heads of the Touhou community are stubborn stone walls.

I hope for the best, but something is weird here.
