Recently got around to watching it, and was pleasantly surprised to find myself loving it. Mystery was great, which was complimented by countryside setting. It really knows how to create tension and ambient atmosphere as it manage d to make me feel uneasy. I heard it's a VN adaptation and there is also a manga, so definitely going to check it out sometime in the future.
What are you thoughts?
Shion is the best girl.

The visual novels (don't watch the anime first or read the manga first)
Download the first arc on steam or nyaa
https://store.steampowered.com/app/310360/Higurashi_When_They_Cry_Hou__Ch1_Onikakushi/
Download 07th mod which adds voice acting from the console versions.
https://07th-mod.com/
When installing, select the option for high quality sprites.
Then when the game opens be sure to use original sprites, original backgrounds and the 2014 music, with censorship set to 0. Your choice if you want to use 4:3 or 16:9, just don't use ADV mode as Higurashi was written with NVL in mind.

I have a copy for the PSVita that's a VN DS port but I've never played it because the sound doesn't work. I've looked and sometimes the files are there but it won't read them and other times there are no soundfiles and they don't work even if I add them manually. I'm probably gonna get the PC version and play it once I'm done with my Muv Luv re-rerun.

Only the first arc has a surviving fan translation. There were fan translations done by other groups, but they have been lost to time (or at least not archived anywhere i can find them). As far as I know no one has tried to backport the current 07th mod script into ONScripter-EN to get an original experience but that shouldn't be too hard to do if someone wanted to give it a try.

MAN I LOVE HIGURASHI SO MUCH
I just started the answer arcs. I usually play on PC but I'm over at my families rn for Christmas. So far I've loved every chapter, and even though I want to take a break so I can think more deeply about what's going on, I can't help myself and have been going through the series pretty quick. Its sooooooo gooo.

By first arc you meant first chapter?

I prefer to use the term "chapter" to refer to the segments between each set of tips (called chapters ingame), and "arc" or "episode" to refer to each individual game. It's confusing because mangagamer uses chapter to refer to each game…

 No.457

I call each game a chapter. I noticed that this version has some different songs, I knew that 07mod had removed some backgrounds from the original but I didn't know that they had changed songs too

Thanks!
So funny story…

For a bit of background, I've always liked going into playing VN's and stuff almost completely blind if I can't help it (I mean who would).
Problem is (lol), I just got whatever came up for higurashi on MangaGamer. Little did I know I ended up getting Hou+.
So fast forward a few days and I'm talking to one of my friends about the game and he asked what has happened so far.
I was like, "well there was this thing about a bus stop and then in the next chapter there was a virus outbreak".
He was like wtf (he's only seen the anime), and he asked be if I really got the game.
tl;dr, I bought hou+ on instead of chapter 1 and ended up spoiling things for me basically lol.

Yes sir! Still my favorite VN.

Currently reading the VNs, just finished part 5 (meakashi). Higurashi is one of the best pieces of creative media I've ever seen; the characters, story, writing, tension and ambiance are all top-tier.

However, I tried watching a little of the anime and I hated it. Even though the art was nice, since they had to cram so much into a few episodes it felt extremely rushed. The was no build-up of tension and so despite there being gore (as opposed to the text-only experience of the vn as there are no unique cg scenes), I felt deaths to be much less impactful. However, the overall story is still amazing.

 No.462

>>124
I heard manga does a better job at adapting VNs than anime, especially answer arcs. But, given how adaptations generally turn out, I think that Studio Deen still did a great job to make it digestible for an anime only. Character designs were great, OSTs were used effectively, show also was seamlessly able to switch from SoL moments to intense paranoia, so I disagree that there wasn't any build up. Despite having some QUALITY shots occasionally, it was still animated pretty well. I guess it would be a bit jarring to go from VNs to anime than it is vice-versa.

 No.463

>>123
The manga is an objectively better adaption of the VN than the anime, the anime changes things around and cuts things out while the manga is more or less a perfect 1 to 1.
Not to take away from the anime, it's a great show on its own but you will be missing a lot of things if that's all you know.

 No.464

>>126
I was going to check out manga too. From what I have seen, I liked that it has varied art style by different illustrators. It's just that story is still fresh in my mind, so I am waiting a few weeks/months for it to fade away and experience most of it all over again.
On a side note, what are your thoughts on OVAs like Rei, Kira, Outbreak and Nekogoroshi etc? Are they worth checking out?

 No.465

>>127
It's best for you if you don't immediately dive into the manga, you'll just burn yourself out. Do as you said and come back in a couple of months.

>On a side note, what are your thoughts on OVAs like Rei, Kira, Outbreak and Nekogoroshi etc? Are they worth checking out?

They all are to an extent. The middle three episodes of Rei are the Saikoroshi arc which is set after the series and were pretty much universally seen as canon prior to Sotsugyou (and should still be seen as so considering how much of a trashfire it was). Kira is dumb noncanon fanservice stuff but a lot of people love the final episode so watch that at least. Nekogoroshi is a standalone episode which plays into the mystery of Hinamizawa and is very good for what it is. Outbreak is fun but trash and completely not canon.

tl;dr Nekogoroshi, Rei 2-4 and Kira 5 are essential, but everything else is at least watchable.

 No.466

>Sotsugyou
What went wrong with it that it is almost universally hated? I never watched it cause of artstyle.

>awful artwork and animation
>complete retread of the original but far worse in execution
>butchered characterisation for the whole cast, but especially Rika and Satoko
>Ryukishi marketing it as a remake when it was actually an unwanted sequel
>tries to tie Higurashi into Umineko but cops out because he is a coward
The better question would be what went right with it
hint: the answer is nothing

People may dislike the original anime series for not being completely faithful to the VN and cutting out important events but it's a much better experience for newcomers compared to the garbofest that was SotsuGou. Imagine what it would be like they made a complete remake or actually decided to create a decent spinoff/continuation using the interesting concept they introduced and already good pre-existing characterization instead of the stunt they pulled

 No.471

I havent rewatched it in years, but I remember the new at the time anime coming out and just being lost. Partly my fault for not reading the VN, but it got into so many different timelines I just got lost.
I think the vague ending older series (if they are how i remember them) have some value at least as an entry. I've got the VNs lined up to read sometime its just having free time outside work to do so + my friend has been nagging me to read fate.

Regardless the music and atmosphere was great from what I remember, might have to rewatch

the VN is much better than any of the anime yes, but the anime are all charming and just another way to enjoy the media.. it was still very entertaining and fun to watch.

all except Gou/Sotsu.

I'm one of the weird fuckers that only read the manga after discovering it through Gou (and then dropping it halfway through for the manga).
I really enjoyed Kai, the story is fun and something you don't see a lot. I think it inspired me to write, or at least try to.
After Kai, Rei felt like a collection of scrapped ideas, but even still I liked Saikoroshi. Felt like a prequel/closing piece for me after Kai.

DEEN Higu is still bad, and I'd honestly say every WTC adaptation and revision that isn't Stage of the Golden Witch is bad in all honesty.
But what makes the difference is the style of both stories.
Higurashi despite the looping is still a fairly straightforward story. There's a mystery, you gradually learn about it, and eventually the conclusion happens.
Compare that to Umineko and IMMINENT UMINEKO STRUCTURAL SPOILERS
Umineko is like this:
>Main story
>Meta
>Main story that also has Meta (Umi2/3)
>TWO Main Stories and also Meta (Umi4)
>Meta with a dash of main story (Umi5/6)
>The Ending (Umi6)
>Another two cour worth of primarily meta, backstory, and thematic reinforcement (Umi7/8)

I would honestly say Umineko is unadaptable, but Stage of the Golden Witch has done a good job so far (only seen 1 and 2).

 No.515

>>514
And to clarify, the only good version of WTC for me is the original VN with the original sprites and backgrounds and music and sound effects, etc.
Everything else just adds a little bit too much for me and takes away from another layer of the story, but maybe I'm just autistic. I don't even think the voice acting in Higu and Umi is entirely necessary, and I think it makes some parts far sillier than intended (like the constant rambling scenes across both works, which sound just a bit more silly when a guy has to read out all of them).
I do imagine the LN adaptations of Higu and Umi are good though. From what I've heard, Keiichi is a bit more like Battler in the Higu LNs but beyond that they seem to be fine.

But the manga and anime just never did it for me and feel more like derivatives than anything, like when a video game is adapted into a movie. Sure, the plot is functionally the same, but you're conducting everything through a completely different medium, and with the revisions to the VN I feel the same thing.
When I see someone posting about the VN and they're using a patch, I just feel like I can't really comment, because by that point it's just a completely different VN.
The art is different, the backgrounds are different, the literal sound (maybe even music) is different, sometimes even the dialogue is different to align with voice acting (that's how it is in the Higu patches at least), and the big change is CGs- Higu has one CG, Umineko has 5 CGs. These patches add dozens in a completely different artstyle.

At a certain point, it stops being the same thing and I can't really relate to the person experiencing it, it's just very autistic.

 No.516

Yeah I was pretty sad to see a Japanese anime reactor dude love higurashi but then not be able to get into it in the Kai seasons because it's just too much too fast and the characters all seem like stilted crazy people.
