ggs, flight is probably the worst option to deal with spells that drain spirit on graze. holding dash is much safer although you are still screwed if you wait until the lightning bolts reach the floor. high jumps/airdashes also work but it's much easier to just hold 6D on the ground instead
thanks for hosting

 No.2144

>>2139
> Is alice a fast character?? how the fuck all of her bullets or whatever are faster than mine despite me shotting first…
As I understand it, she doesn't even have classic bullets if you don't count 6B. Her C "bullets" are about delayed concentration of firepower, so your task is to make this concentrated power go to waste instead of blocking it. And for delayed bullets she gets extra snappy melee, you just have to deal with it.
>>2143
I tried to HJ->66 in air, but apparently didn't input it in time or something. Staying in that corner would mean death just as well since you would additionally hit me during stagger.

 No.2145

>>2144
The soku wiki seems to be down, but the moves I mean are her dolls that shoots bullets or that attack with knives.
I can be right in front of her, shoot first (An I know because I see my character do her animation first) And Alice second, and yet Alice gets me first.
I honestly don't know how to deal with her, seems like she has everything covered unless I'm using a bottom tier character and I'm shooting myself in the foot.

 No.2146

>>2144
>I tried to HJ->66 in air, but apparently didn't input it in time or something
nope, you still have graze frames throughout the whole duration of the high jump even if the airdash still doesn't come out so that wasn't it. that spell is just like that

even after it spreads out it does stupid spirit damage, but when the bolts are all clumped together like that it's straight up impossible to go right through it, no matter what you do

 No.2147

>>2145
> dolls that shoots bullets or that attack with knives
Yeah 5B is basically a melee move with bullet properties so it's super fast, and 5A is as snappy as her other melees.
> I honestly don't know how to deal with her, seems like she has everything covered unless I'm using a bottom tier character and I'm shooting myself in the foot.
I'm no expert on Iku, but this matchup does seem harsh on her. I know how frustrating it is to lose melee hitbox to a doll, and considering how much Iku relies on long range but high recovery melees… Try to search for Iku's densest bullets, such character has to have something of this nature.

 No.2148

>>2147
>and considering how much Iku relies on long range but high recovery melees
that's the thing, Alice beats me on that field too, her range is fucking insane and faster than me, when I want to back dash to setup a safe distance to do an j2A or j6A her j6A gets me first or hits my move hurt box
On the ground it works as anti air too.

Brace yourself, learn from them, adapt. Getting demolished is what makes you stronger in the end, and playing against another noob isn't. Lesser and lesser extent of demolition each time will show if you're truly progressing, again unlike victories vs another noob that are primarily caused by opponent's lack of skill instead of increase in yours.

I wish /vm/ as a whole was more active. Board's a neat idea on paper, but most would rather just stick with /v/ or /vg/.

 No.2159

>>2154
You'd need to shill the game on more active threads to try and find more newbies. Very few people will randomly decide to pick up a 16 year old niche fighting game out of the blue, and if they do they would probably instantly go to d*scord, as is the case with most niche fightans.
>I wish the /vm/ thread was alive too, there are more chances to get new people there than here.
True, but /vm/ is still a really slow board and it's mostly used by people that stick to their favorite game threads exclusively. No one's just gonna casually stumble upon the /vm/ soku thread if they weren't already interested in playing the game.

 No.2160

I'd honestly suggest trying to integrate with them at some level.
>Realistically, can we compete at all?
No, the soku discord has 11k members and most soku tools are heavily integrated in it, such as the soku replay site https://sokureplays.delthas.fr (same guy who developed autopunch). Meanwhile we have about 20 or so unique players across all of our tournaments…
There are other discord servers out there but they are a lot smaller

I don't know, playing against other noobs has made me become more creative and to look for more open weaknesses, and I learn how to win which is something important or else you will always be stuck at the same level, against pro's losing becomes habit and winning feels like luck.
In fact when I fought against some people my level then fought against pros I gave more or a fight and was less predictable.

It's like lifting weights, you don't start with the heavy ones, you start small then work your way up.

I believe most of the pros here have demolished millions of noobs many times so they know all the moves someone could make.

Maybe, I like /vm/ as it is, a board for people to host and play games and that's it, some light discussion is fine but not too much because the inevitable fate of any place with recurrent posters is that they get turned into generals, and they start to get more and more unhinged with time because people start to care more about the posters inside than the game.

 No.2164

>>2159
Oh yeah trust me, I've been doing my part trying to shill the game on the entire site. But you gotta do things slowly, otherwise people might get irritated by it.

But it's hard, just the fact that it's a fighting game filters a lot of people.
>No one's just gonna casually stumble upon the /vm/ soku thread if they weren't already interested in playing the game.
There are more chances that it happens, there's just more people there, when a thread is active they pop out more in the catalog/index, some bored guy might pick it up, I bet on those slim chances.

> I don't know, playing against other noobs has made me become more creative and to look for more open weaknesses, and I learn how to win which is something important or else you will always be stuck at the same level
Then again, have you started winning or at least nearing it with good players after that? You won't surpass their and your level of play if you don't face difficulties.

At least in my case getting demolished worked, even though rather slowly - took me a year from scratch (in both soku and fighting games in general), 70% of this time playing vs Marisa and then Alice with 1% winrate, but nowadays I think I'm able to hold 50%+ against that Marisa player and 20% on good day with Alice player. Not that I had a big choice on /v/hu… But it yielded nicely in the end so I'm glad I've had such teachers.

 No.2169

>>2168
>Then again, have you started winning or at least nearing it with good players after that?
Yeah, I said so in my post.
I make new strategies when playing with people at my level, I use them against good players and it works at first, then they figure out how to beat me and then I get demolished again (but less now because I have more tools at my disposal)
I'm not saying playing against good people is bad, but only playing against them gives poor gains.

 No.2170

>>2165
>I don't see the downside in trying to get some more folks to come to these tournaments
They already host tournaments like nearly every single week, and they likely all have much larger entrance than our tourneys. If the problem is the amount of entrants you could just join those tourneys as well, I'm fairly sure registration is open for everyone anyways.
I'd like to think most people here already know about that server and how large it is, just like every other fighting game discord server. So if they still prefer to play here or on /vm/, it's precisely because that's the kind of place they'd rather not interact with.

>a board for people to host and play games
Yeah, but I wish it was recognized more for that. Right now it's just seen as a backup plan for when things aren't working out on the 2 major vidya boards. The fact some people still think /vm/ stands for video games/mobile also hurts to see.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S, if more people were to branch out and try out different games then there should unironically be a tourney for that game some time, it's even playable with good netcode now and it's a very funny game

>I'm dogshit at EVERY fighting game, I can't even do hadoukens consistently let alone any sort of actual skill

the good thing about execution is that it's the one thing you can polish fully by yourself. depending on how serious you are about wanting to learn a game, you could autistically sit on training mode for hours simply trying to do certain inputs or combos, and try out different ways to do them until you find the most consistent for you. but you could also just do that only for a small bit and then go try it out against the CPU to put that in practice in a less monotone environment. either way, it's entirely a matter of trial and error and then sheer practice until you can do it even without having to think about it, which eventually happens for everyone

if that's your biggest hurdle to get started then i'd seriously consider doing either of those things with patience. soku is a fun game and missing out simply because of mechanical stuff would be a shame. plus, getting past that stage will make it much easier to try out other fighting games, it's like a whole genre opens up to you

Also, I think I found THE usage of 5c tornado during typhoon - activating it on last seconds so that enemy gets in stagger, then typhoon runs out and he gets sucked in properly. by the way, a couple things that may help: the 5Bs you use in neutral aren't really doing much in most cases. they are slow so they're easy to dodge on reaction but they are not slow enough like Reisen's B bullets that basically stop moving and hold a certain space. you could find some uses against slower characters, but for the time being they probably do more harm than good because you spend spirit and don't really stop me from doing anything at a distance. and if you want to cover a specific space then 5c will probably be more useful. otherwise, you'll gain much more mileage out of more 6Cs, which are probably the best sniping bullets in the game and they can easily interrupt anything (like how you killed my doll setups a few times just by sniping me from full screen)

and when it comes to spells, you should probably try using them in very specific situations until you are more comfortable with them. a spell like Thundercloud Stickleback has many uses, but if you try to use it without a specific purpose in mind you will end up burning meter for nothing. for example you could keep it as an oki card exclusively for now, which will also make your decision making much easier and quicker since you don't have to think too much whether certain card is good in certain situation. same with other cards like that 4sc star or 3sc drill or whatever, finding them specific purposes will make managing your hand much easier and more effective

ggs, very well played neutral. i have to say though, i really think you are hindering yourself by not using Veils, ever. that thing is not even a reversal and it's still a better reversal than pretty much all reversals. it's genuinely up there as one of the single best cards in the whole game, so not using it when you are struggling with defense seems like shooting yourself in the foot. i think it could spare you a lot of headaches
thanks for hosting

By Veils you mean "Veils Like Sky"? I don't know how to properly use it but I'll try using it more from now on.

 No.2226

>>2225
yes
>I don't know how to properly use it
all it does is let you graze melee moves in addition to just bullets. so you can quite literally just dash out of pressure for free, for 15 seconds. and since melee+standard bullets cover like 99% of moves in the game, usually the opponent can't do jackshit about it so you can straight up run at them and anything they do will whiff, which lets you go from defense to winning neutral easily too. you only graze during graze frames though so if you get hit during attack startup or during a move you'll still take a hit, but the opponent will usually be scared of mashing because you can just run through it. even if you are scared of getting hit, you can still safely go anywhere on screen and go back to spamming bullets or whatever. pretty good card

 No.2227

>>2226
So it's something like spring Haze + Automatic Graze? I was thinking about improving my pressure first but seems like I will have to use it as a reversal.

 No.2228

>>2227
more like a better spring haze, because it doesn't drain any additional spirit whereas spring haze completely drains your spirit extremely quickly. and it's not automatic, that would straight up be full invincibility, you just graze melee moves as if they were bullets. so you can dash/high jump/fly/airdash through basically everything. but you can't just stand still and dodge stuff
>I was thinking about improving my pressure first but seems like I will have to use it as a reversal
i mean that would still be good, having a card that single-handedly takes care of defense means you can focus on other stuff meanwhile

Ggs! I REALLY need to stop trying to win air melee head-ons. I barely ever win them with Aya, let alone Yuyuko.

Also, I'm starting to lose all hope in using fanspin 623 as grazing move, I just don't get it. Even when I manage to input it, it ain't grazing shit, sometimes not even starting to hit too. I know it waits to close in and stuff before hitting, but it waits way too long when enemy is right in front of me, even if I used 623B. But somehow when I watch others use it, it works just fine…

Ggs! Aya vs Remi is very good contender for first place in worst matchup list after this set, "fast" Aya's melee lose both in speed and reach and Remi's snappy dashes instead of graze suddenly is not a problem since Aya has no real protracted bullets to anyhow defend against them.

if you are getting overwhelmed though you really should reconsider if you really want to get back into the fight asap, airteching instantly when you are getting smothered just makes things worse. you can at least think about your options and recover some spirit while you are in free fall and/or knocked down, whereas instant airteching means you'll probably get caught like a deer in headlights and with low spirit on top of that, so you just get crushed into more damage over and over again

I was surprised by how much the matches changed over the past few sets, so I went to see how many games we have played in total (or at least how many replays I have). Apparently, we've played over 600 matches including the last set. No wonder it felt like both of us know perfectly well what the other person will do and what needs to be done to prevent that. I don't think I had more than a hundred matches with many people even when I was playing actively…

Ggs! Aya vs Okuu matchup might be my favourite (from Aya side), I feel like Okuu's fat hitbox allows many character specific blockstrings/combos, I wish I could find and toy with them more in live games.
Also, was my attempt on webm hopeless from the start, or I just missed the timing?

 No.2445

ggs, well played. keep in mind 6C > 236x is not an actual reset so that's a free escape point, otherwise your pressure was pretty solid

>I feel like Okuu's fat hitbox allows many character specific blockstrings/combos

as far as i remember Iku is the go-to character for meme custom combos, but otherwise yeah Okuu is a big fat bird so you can probably find more optimized routes against her

>Also, was my attempt on webm hopeless from the start, or I just missed the timing?

the latter, you want to hit her as soon as she enters the screen because once she is in free fall she becomes able to block (or even attack/fly if the Rocket Dive hits or gets blocked). that said, trying to go for an early hard punish is a gamble because she can mix up the height at which she returns to the screen by using the B or C version, so if that was a C Rocket Dive instead and you tried to time ID to hit me from that distance it would just outright whiff

 No.2446

>>2445
> keep in mind 6C > 236x is not an actual reset so that's a free escape point
I know, but if it is blocked (and it happens often enough from my experience) it's an entire spirit orb less to break through. Just gotta make sure I'm not doing it each time to not get too predictable.
> you want to hit her as soon as she enters the screen because once she is in free fall she becomes able to block

it WILL get blocked if done properly since many things are tight into 6C and 6C > 236x is tight. the problem is that 236x will kill your pressure afterwards unless you have a 2sc or 3sc or you go for gimmicky follow-ups like instant j6A. once you hjc the 236 there's almost nothing you can do to catch a dash, even if you fly back down you are still at a huge frame disadvantage now. so yeah can't really capitalize off of that spirit damage if pressure time is already over

>Oh, noted

yeah, that's in the case of hit or block. if Rocket Dive whiffs she can only block. in that case the easiest punish is any AUB so you don't have to guess the B/C version 50/50

In the last three games you could see me desperately trying to setup 6C and high j6C dolls for 22B and getting j5C half of the time because my hands act faster than my brain. I didn't get any proper unblockable setups, but at least I scared you with superflash a few times lol.

> 6C > 236x is tight
…I'm getting 236->2c flashbacks here. It's either tight only in certain range, or I'm again being abysmally bad with inputs when opponents graze after 6C.
> the problem is that 236x will kill your pressure afterwards unless you have a 2sc or 3sc or you go for gimmicky follow-ups like instant j6A
Full spirit crushes are very unlikely as of now without opponent cooperating, so it sort of has to end up in metered pressure after that. Usually I manage to eat off from 2 to 3-3.5 orbs during meterless pressure, which then guarantees break with 2c.
> once you hjc the 236 there's almost nothing you can do to catch a dash, even if you fly back down you are still at a huge frame disadvantage now
While generally true, there are some continuations, only problem is that they have to be hard reads. Usually opponents do either 1) forward dash: instant air tengu drum should catch these just fine (+ extra orb damage on lvl3 if blocked), and I actually am capable of doing them (or well, very-fast-air tengu drums) in stable fashion in practice mode at least. hjc9->D3->j.5a should work too, but is character specific, for those who doesn't have high-hitting 66A (Alice), and I'm struggling to input it fast enough as well. 2) (high) jump: that's where hjc9->66 is needed, if opponent is read properly it should even be possible to land j.5a and not just catch him with 6A/8A. Tengu drum might do the trick too, but then it should be timed differently from for intercepting dashes most likely.
3) bullet: just flight into the face lol.

Ggs! Despite having Cirno-sized hitbox, Suwako, apparently, is not Cirno at all! She's actually very scary.
One thing I'm really lost in though, how do I counter protracted bullets without having a denser bullet? Quite a few characters have bullets that go out for a long amount of time and close a lot of space, but can be cancelled before area near character becomes safe for counterattack, like: Suwako's water gust, Marisa's laser (in air), Sakuya's 2B and similar stuff. Do I really just get out of the way and hope next such attack misses initially? And what the fuark do I do if water gust has autoaim?..

ggs, finally starting to feel like i can properly play the frog

>how do I counter protracted bullets without having a denser bullet?

you don't always counter those, you counter the follow-ups. those are all very different bullets anyways, Suwako j6C has tremendous pushback on herself, just two j6Cs are enough to push her from corner to corner. she is forced to airdash cancel it, and the melee cancels are quick-ish and have massive hitboxes but they also have hilariously long recoveries so you aim for those instead. Marisa laser is actually not a laser and is not that dense at all, it loses pretty easily and its cancel window kicks in kinda late, but if you don't wanna challenge it you can graze and attack from above/below and at the very least force her into defense, if not outright punish her for it. Sakuya 2B is pretty obnoxious but it's also just an anti-air so the solution is just don't make you air approaches too predictable. you can j1D into the ground to bait it out and then chase here into the air or just keep playing neutral safely, it's not like you have to commit hard to an air approach if she's abusing it. also some characters kinda don't give a shit about it anyways like Yuyu with a well spaced j2A

>spoiler

same as above, graze. there's no need to punish literally everything, good positioning is already a pretty decent reward if you are able to win space and let her corner herself without taking any damage at all

Ggs! I tried to get a grip and stay out of autopilot for entire duration, but 40 games are too much to play them all full-consciously still.
> Baiting people into your reversals feels good, doesn't it?
When you do consciously bait for it… I mostly use my tornado either on reaction or as interruption during "usual" sequences in hopes that opponent would act as usual too. Most conscious baiting happens when I play Yuyuko somehow.

Also I wanted to declare that typhoon-tornado technique works when webm was happening, but now I see I actually ran out of typhoon this time and you got caught in usual flight. I feel like moment of truth about this is bound to happen soon nonetheless.

GGs, thanks for the games. I remember back when I was just starting to play soku and searched for a character I like, I dismissed Aya because I hated her combos, thought that she was boring to play and didn't have any decent specials outside from her defualt 236X. Looking at it now, I couldn't be more wrong. After playing her a little I fell in love with her near-corner combos and found out that most of her specials are usable, and can even completely change her game plan.

>probably the first time i've seen that alternate 236x, looks like a pretty good skill against Suwako

I was looking to try something new when I remembered that she had usable 236X specials. I think that led me to unlocking the most obnoxious character possible: fast movement speed, absurd air mobility, decent zoning, full-screen snipes, crossups on oki, and mosquito-like damage to ensure that games take forever.

GGs, thanks for the games. I don't understand the range of Aya's normals at all, they are either too small to contest something or too slow to be used on reaction, and her 4A is atrociously small and has too much recovery on whiff. I'm not used to her combos from bullet starters, so I couldn't reliably use bullets to control space either. It felt like I could barely challenge you at midrange in most games, and that was my entire gameplan…

>At this point I just have to ask, do you deliberately aim for lowest damage and longest games?

It's not completely correct, but I wanted to play Aya as very mobile zoner, so I can't deny it either. Hitting someone with the 236X tornado or default 22B feels really good too lol.

As for Alice, I don't use her 3sc that much anyways, I think it's only good for AUB setups or f5a 6A 3sc to squeeze extra damage. She has amazing skills that are hard to contest at high levels, so losing these skill cards (or coins) often hurts, even if it's done to secure a round win. Having no spells also ensures that I always have a coin in the deck.

 No.2606

>>2605
> I don't understand the range of Aya's normals at all, they are either too small to contest something or too slow to be used on reaction
It is what it is… Aya's ground normals are for CQC exclusively except maybe for 66C. j.8A is her only move with good reach and speed, but to use it most of the times you gotta be in already losing position lower than your opponent.
> her 4A is atrociously small and has too much recovery on whiff
I don't get this one at all either. It's copy of first two 5A hits, which hit mid (not even chance to chip any spirit) and don't reach anywhere except superclose, but you get shitty f.5A continuation once you get out of range instead of good 5AAA. So it's pretty much most useless thing in entire Aya's moveset.
> It felt like I could barely challenge you at midrange in most games, and that was my entire gameplan…
> play Aya as very mobile zoner
That's quite ungodly… And rather strange thing to do in soku, as with two bullet buttons pretty much everyone is a bit of a zoner already, but Aya gets weakest normal bullets and only has "zoning" 236 exclusively on ground, while her far-reaching melee (singular) is exclusive to air, really doesn't strike me as good synergy for such purposes. Also many characters would rather zone Aya themselves since they easily win skirmish with her, so at least for me it appears like a suicidal strategy for most matchups.

 No.2607

>>2606
>Aya's ground normals are for CQC exclusively except maybe for 66C. j.8A is her only move with good reach and speed
Now that's something I disagree with. Both 66A and 66B are dominating on the ground, it's just hard to use them properly. Her jA is reliable most of the time as well.

>So it's pretty much most useless thing in entire Aya's moveset.

It can be used to safely mash during messy ground skirmishes and can also be used to catch jumps. Well, at least that's what I think when I use it, but it just can't do the same things Meiling's 4A does, and I end up getting hit.

>That's quite ungodly… And rather strange thing to do in soku, as with two bullet buttons pretty much everyone is a bit of a zoner already

Maybe "hit-and-run character" would describe this playstyle better. She can't build an impassable wall in front of her like Meiling, but with her mobility and great grounded options she can force the opponent to play at her pace. It's not a good way to play the character, but it forces Aya to be more creative in neutral and use risky moves more often, and I like playing like that.

>I wonder if you can get even lamer 5c tornado without opponent eating full pack of doll cads
i couldn't read that and not test it out purely out of sheer curiosity/autism. turns out yes, you could go even lower

first combo is your punish, second combo is what i'd say is the lowest tornado damage possible. 1398 damage before HP proration, both with the same 18 hits of the tornado. comparing our webms, the HP proration seems to be about ~75%, so in that same scenario the tornado would do a measly 1049 damage

you could go for an even lower damage combo but the tornado itself does slightly more damage compared to these combos so i didn't count it. and yes, they all do less damage than using the raw spell without any prior hits

moral of the story is, avoid tacking on unnecessary damage modifiers when punishing with spells

 No.2610

>>2607
> Both 66A and 66B are dominating on the ground, it's just hard to use them properly.
66A is flawed heavily by being minus on wrongblock(!) and having shitty hitbox from f.5A, 66B is fully reactable with 17 frames of startup (if we take average human reaction time as 250ms) and is empty without spellcancels. You can't really use them at own will or as reaction, it's gotta be a correct hard read or you pass your turn, for me it's far from "dominating". Also 2 and 3 active frames are rather sad for this type of moves.
> Her jA is reliable most of the time as well.
It's fast indeed, but it doesn't lose in range only to Reisen, Patchy, Youmu, Cirno and Suwako, other similar airkicks outrange it horizontally either slightly or a lot.

66A is only -1f on wrongblock, effectively making her 2A an 8F move. It works against a good chunk of characters, and she can cancel it into 236X anyways, letting her reset pressure if her opponent if scared.

>You can't really use them at own will or as reaction, it's gotta be a correct hard read or you pass your turn, for me it's far from "dominating"

Both of these moves cover a decent chunk of space in front of Aya, reliably checking the ground approaches, and even lead to combo on hit (counterhit in case of 66B). 66A is 11F and covers more space than f5a and probably even 6A. 66B is not as fast, but it covers more space than everything else, and is much safer than 66C. It requires some correct reads, but I think occasionally losing momentum is fine as long as 66B introduces a threat at specific spacing.

 No.2616

>>2610
the strength from 66A comes from the fact that it's her fastest high hitting normal. f5A is about as fast but the range restriction makes it rather predictable, and at close range it's literally not even an option. 4/5A are both mids, and 6A is a high with better frame advantage but it's really slow so even if you can't react to it, it's possible to fuzzy guard against it since the only mixup option with similar timing is 3A which kinda sucks

meanwhile 66A is extremely easy to land a wrongblock with, and even against characters that can mash against it it's good enough to get a wrongblock into 236B, which is a guaranteed crush if you already get the opponent down to 2 orbs

The doll did lose its hitbox after being blocked, because it's a Lv1 doll. They don't hit more than once until they're upgraded to Lv3.
And as for why the extension still shows it with a hitbox, that is a mystery.

Oooh, that's a nice revelation. I'll have to track of one more thing during the game, but it's definitely worth it for not being afraid of early returning dolls.

Just to make sure, the tourney is still happening this Saturday right? I know there haven't been any new announcements, but I'm just asking since there's no new thread or registration link so I dunno if something else came up or if it'll still happen as planned.
