Anybody seen the new ghost in the shell anime trailer. It seems to be closer to the manga, and I can recognise various scenes from the manga in the trailer.

Waiting for the actual show to have an opinion because these trailers dont really say much.

I am very exited for what could be the first good GITS anything since the 2000's TV anime.
If it does stick closely to the manga and adapts it fully it'll be amazing.

Something doesn't feel right about it. I can't really give you a reason. I just feel spooked and uncomfy. I love GITS don't get me wrong, but it makes me feel so uneasy. Motoko isn't a sympathetic character to me. I don't really like her and I figure that's what makes me uneasy. Maybe I'm just tired of remakes? The visuals look good going by the trailers, but I wanna re-read the manga first with Masamune Shirow's notes.

It's not a remake, anon.
this is the first time a faithful adaptation has ever be attempted.

Hard to really say without watching it first. I don't wanna disrespect the other adaptions, they weren't strictly speaking faithful plot wise but they were great. I guess that's what makes me feel off too. I like the manga version of Motoko less than the anime.

OP here. I plan to finish the manga before I watch the release in July.I have already read GITS 1 and am currently reading 1.5. I have read both but I want to understand it better as the footnotes often provide more detail around some of the technology and terms used. Hopefully I'll finish GITS 2 by the time of the release.

I think the only thing that sort of strieks me as odd is how it's replicating Shirow's style (and in turn the cutscenes from the PSX game) with coloring more akin to modern tv anime, but otherwise it does look alright to me. Though how it looks for a full episode is anyone's guess. I think the series justifies far more than anything since SAC first ending in the 2000s since GiTS never having a faithful adaptation compared to Dominion, Appleseed, or even Black Magic is reason enough to give it a shot, though admittedly I wasn't a big fan of the manga and Oshii basically doing his own thing for the movie was something I liked a lot more.

Anon for the Love of God do NOT read Man Machine interface. Basically nobody acknowledges it (this piece of art is the only thing I can think of which referenced it in any way) and was in the period of time when Shirow decided using 3D renders for manga was a good idea. Do yourself and stop after 1.5

>I wasn't a big fan of the manga and Oshii basically doing his own thing for the movie was something I liked a lot more.
Agreed. Oshii's movie is darker and more mature, tonally closer to his work on the Kerberos series instead of the horny action comedy that is Shirow's manga. The movie and SAC are much better. Shirow's shows us fancy technologies without really getting into the mud of how they shape the characters subjectivity and there are a lot of childish action tropes and gratuitous sex. Oshii's movie feels like the polar opposite of this. What would a more faithful adaption actually look like? I'm guessing an episodic structure that follows the manga? But how does that bring anything fresh or interesting? I can just read that stuff anyway.

I guess its a big question mark but my gut feeling tells me its just another attempt to cash in on a known brand that's aimed specifically at people who were introduced to GiTS in the 90s or 2000s. This is the Disneyfication of anime. Like Alien Romulus, by no means a bad film, but a rerun of all the old beats where all the old stock tropes of the franchise are reheated and revisited without adding much of anything, I have a feeling this new anime will be similar to that.

I personally don't really like the direction of GITS 2026, but apparently I also wouldn't have actually liked GITS in general, so I'm just not the target audience. Good for the fans and them getting a manga-accurate adaptation, though.

Oshii's own take on the film was that he simplified a much more complex manga. And he's right because the movie avoids a lot of the most difficult philosophical stuff to focus on pretty basic cyberpunk themes surrounding identity and subjectivity that would be more accessible to mainstream audiences.

The GiTS manga isn't really that deep. A lot of anime/manga mixes vague philosophical/techno religious imagery and transhumanist bullshit to pad out the narrative and give them the illusion of depth. The world building is rich, complex, and Shirow did his research, credit where its due, but I don't think the story is philosophically deep. I'm surprised that Oshii's movie was such a huge hit because in many ways it isn't that traditional. I figure it has to do with the 90s era where the PC revolution made tech seem like magic.

>but I don't think the story is philosophically deep

The existentialist elements that Oshii carried on from the manga aren't particularly "deep", that's true. Shirow committing to a detailed ontology for his world (by manga standards) gives it a philosophical richness that has nothing to do with the existentialist and moral concerns that a lot of people pigeonhole philosophy into, but nonetheless is a major cut above most popular fiction in terms of what it's offering philosophically. It's not so much in the narrative, but more so in the world building.

I honestly wish I'd listened to this advice. What a slog.

>>1216
>Shirow committing to a detailed ontology for his world (by manga standards) gives it a philosophical richness
Yeah. I'd say I'd revise some of my opinions after reading the manga, its a really rich world but I do think Machine Man Interface shows exactly some of the problems I've whined about before.

It would be nice if figamin or someone else could stream this for all the GiTS fans of /cel/. Would be good for site activity too.

>Motoko isn't a sympathetic character to me
To be fair, she isn't really meant to be. You're supposed to sympathize with her circumstances and hardships but she's a government stooge at the end of the day, just like the rest of Section 9.

>>1219
Would someone with a completely cybernetic body, whose body is not a site of vulnerability, who does not experience pain, share the same emotions and feelings as we do? Its not possible to relate to Motoko and she cannot relate to us.

This is what makes the movie and early SAC Motoko better than the manga version. Shes cold, detached, unfeeling, even her sexual relationships seem predatory. This is great setup for a character but it makes you not like her at all.

 No.1223

Has anybody watch the anime yet? If so how did you find it ? It's seems very accurate to the manga. I quite liked the first episode

 No.1224

First ep is pretty much exactly what i hoped for.
Accurate to the manga with Motoko being silly like she's supposed to.
Animation quality very high too.
I'm re-reading the manga alongside and i can't find anything to complain about so far.
What I'm wondering is if people who haven't read the manga are having a hard time keeping up with what's happening on screen as it is a pretty information dense experience.

 No.1225

I watched episode one twice. I watched subbed first, and the pacing felt crammed and awkward. It was too fast for me to digest all the dialogue. I haven't read the manga, so after reading the first chapter I saw that it was pretty much scene-for-scene, so then I watched the dub and that was easier. I imagine if my nihongo was better I'd have been able to keep up with everything, but part of me feels like they wasted a lot of screen time in the opening sequence and were just trying to compensate. Maybe episode 2 will be a little different. It's a pretty big contrast in pacing coming from GITS:SAC.

You can expect the pacing to stay the same as the plan seems to be to adapt the first volume in 10 episodes.

 No.1229

Yeah, there are something that may not be easy to understand.. Especially since the manga explains some things in the footnotes, and the anime doesn't seem to have that

 No.1239

Another great episode.
As a fan of the manga i am super happy right now.
I was wondering how they where going to adapt THAT scene but i think they did a good job considering the obvious limitations they had to work with.
