This one si strange since it looks like it got a decent budget and a lot of a push. Arguably it's very stupid, but it has a few scenes.

The story? A new test course has a new kind of car, and if it goes over 300km an hour, you are warped to a zone of demonic creatures. Anything that goes through special zones faster than 300km suffers the same fate. The story is about fighting these creatures. Also the car transforms into a mech.

It ends on a cliffhanger and it's not an adaption of any manga so you can't tell where the story goes. I swear I've seen this ending somewhere else before. So the main businessman bad guy is now implied to actually be a demon creature or something, since he was mostly an antagonist during the episodes, but in the last one he is walking unharmed through flames with glowing eyes.

Overall rating: stupid but a few nice scenes.

Personally I find that when you track the overall amount of production of OVAs (at least prior to when they started being replaced by late night TV anime) you can see a over saturation and resulting lack of quality control between around 89-92, with new OVA production peaking at around 90 in 1991. The next 5 years after that is probably my favorite period insofar as after the bubble burst most of the bottom end primarily meant for rental stores got wiped out, and most of what left was quite strong. The downside being that during that period of oversaturation a whole bunch of interesting stuff got adapted that probably couldn't have otherwise, so we lost out on that. I'm quite fond of Ankoku Shinwa, it's actually a pretty technically solid production, but it's steeped in exposition on pop occultism and is quite clinical and off putting, it's the kind of thing that really should only be seen specifically by fans of that kind of material. But I found it quite enjoyable. And the surreal imagery is striking no matter what where your interests lie.

Yes, that's exactly one that comes to mind. I saw it on youtube as The Dark Myth about 10 years ago? The direction is fine, but it's mostly the source material which is just endless exposition. So unless they were gonna completely upend the source material, you're stuck with it. My memory of the OVA is alternating between something happening, then maybe 5 minutes of exposition about shinto and buddhist mythology.

There were a few very stellar interesting scenes - the two scenes with Hungry Ghosts are solid. The one where a woman goes to a pool and transforms into one and the other time when they attack a convoy. A few stellar scenes do not excuse everything else.

You know how NGE is a huge crowd pleaser, which can blend religious mythology, but is otherwise always keeping the audience interested? Ankoku Shinwa is the polar opposite of that.

The grid actually makes it look MORE interesting than it really is. Maybe the pacing works better in manga format?

This one is about vampires and demons in a cyberpunk landscape. This sits in an awkward spot since it's well made, well directed, has nice visuals, but somehow ends up being incredibly forgettable. The production values are leagues above most forgettable OVA. No BD release, but an HDTV rip.

85-86 seems to be peak shitty low budget OVA era. There's so much forgettable tripe that's not even good to look at.

I think Takashi Anno does a fantastic job creating that sense of dread and making the mysticism feel properly horrific (though not exactly scary), it might not be as good as his section of Maison Ikkoku, but for me the storyboarding is generally what has the most weight in making something good, and I legitimately find the pauper cultism interesting, so it all works for me.

That one in particular was quite bad, I think the hit to miss ratio wasn't terrible in those years though. 85 had some pretty legendary ones, where 86 was definitely weaker, but then I can still think of a dozen good ones from that year and that's only looking at new debuts, a lot of the higher end ones from got even stronger episodes in 86, like Iczer 1 and MZ23.

Did a quick head count for 85, looks like 16/21 of the OVAs I've seen there were good. So quite good by historic anime standards.

This grid mogs the small grid I made when I watched it. It's a 90s Shinbo work though, so of course it's going to be one of the best looking things ever.
