Modern anime is almost too clean for me. Lacks that grit and effort.

I'm in my mid-30s, so not quite old enough to have been an adult when these shows were popular, but not young enough to be a Gen Zer who is into retro anime since it's an exotic underground thing for them.
I watched Toonami as a kid and wanted to find more shows like that. Older anime fans would consider that kiddie, but younger ones would say I grew up with anime in an oldschool way.

In my experience, most of the retro anime fans I have known in real life that like old series are in their forties or fifties and they are from all walks of life. The first generation likes or mentions Heidi or Mazinger Z, it doesn't really come as a surprise. Manga didn't really get translated in most countries until the late 80s.
There are probably more young retro fans than ever since series like Ideon or Ashita no Joe have been translated and I have seen many have those two as favourites, but if you want to discuss them with Japanese fans you will eventually notice the majority are literal sixty year olds. Makes you wonder, how old is Wapchan's userbase?

Anyone who loves something will be interested in the history of that thing. If you like animation, you will love to watch all the classics from the past, read about their history, how they were made, what influenced them. Its the same with baseball, movies, photography, any other interest. You like it for its own sake.
If you like something purely to come off as “underground” or “retro” you are pretty shallow. So called Gen Z is all about style over substance. There is nothing “underground” about people today. They are the most passive, complacent, narcissistic generation. A bunch of shallow uncritical do nothings who are into old stuff because they think it makes them look cool and intelligent to other online idiots.
