Just starting with UY, which had a fantastic BD release with no denoising or smoothing and nice clean scans.

These shows were shot on 16mm film which is grainier than 35mm film.

Comparison of DNR vs. original film grain. You can see the loss of quality and the blurriness of the image.

old anime on BD should look like the filmreels, not digipaint

This is how unedited 16mm looks, especially with the cheaper film stock they had at the time.

Another grain vs. no grain example from the OVAs, which used 35mm film (thank god).

I'll play devil's advocate and say that DNR isn't always bad. It's bad when a film transfer has all of its detail smoothed out and obliterated with grain removal, but too much grain can also be distracting and harmful. I feel that way looking at a lot of these screenshots. Some also have chroma noise which is almost always negative, and easy to remove. I think they look better with a light denoising. Ultimately, it's best to leave grain as is. Grain is detail. There's really no entirely non destructive way to remove it.

Another example is comparing the two different HD transfers of Cardcaptor Sakura. I know that lots of people prefer the older transfer due to its warmer colors and lack of DNR, but I find the newer one to be much more pleasant to look at. It's far cleaner and sharper. The only flaw that the DNR can be a bit heavy at times and harms detail.

I feel like the right balance is something like Outlaw Star's impeccable HD transfer. It's certainly one of the best that I've ever seen.

16mm can also be incredibly detailed and clean as well when it comes to grain. Good examples are Evangelion and Gunbuster.

So let me get this straight, why DO we have three threads dedicated entirely to film grain? Just stick to a single thread

My bad. I only replied because I saw this on the overboard. I guess the OP just really loves grain. Maybe figamin can condense the threads somehow.
