So I know the 20th Century in general is the gud shit, but I argue that the '90s, (or rather, from about 1988 onwards), was the absolute best, in terms of animation quality and good draftmanship, as well as actual directing, creating atmosphere and unique imagery. All those little special effects were great too-The glistening, the glowing, the blurry scenes, heat waves etc.

The 70s and 80s were good, but to me it felt sort of like the animators and director and writers etc were still establishing themselves. The 90s is when they found their feet and took off running in practically every aspect.

I think this era ended in around 2003,and I'm not sure why, maybe digital was just hard to get used to-- but I read somewhere that in the late '90s and early '00s there was a sort of "anime brain drain"-- that is, a lot of older greats left the industry, and the new young talent had a lack of mentorship.Of course there was also increased appeal to otaku and probably some budget issues.

I find that anime was more consistently high quality in terms of animation quality from about 84 up until about 91 personally, maybe up until 94, and generally 70s and early 80s anime have the strongest storyboarding. There were some major innovations in the 90s, but shows fell back on still images far more, shot composition got a bit less inventive, Shinbo is the person I can think of who really stands out who wasn't already active in the 80s, and before the OVA market collapsed they were pumping out way too many low quality ones, fewer lavishly animated films as well. When TV anime spiked in 98 quite a few of the shows looked kind of bad too. That general level of high quality we were seeing in mid-late 80s TV anime, when the market for it contracted seemed very distant by that point. Keeping a show looking good for almost 100 episodes straight like the did with Maison Ikkoku feels downright impossible for the industry to pull off at any other time.

There were some huge accomplishments and overcoming of past restrictions, in the 90s though, like Hamaji's Resurrection, but then in the 80s we had stuff like Be Invoked, Birth and Akira which did the same. A small handful of realist animators definitely reached peak skill level by the mid 90s, Ohira, Iso, Utsunomiya, Inoue, Okiura, but then Kanada school guys like Kanada and Yamashita were doing the same a decade earlier.

That's an interesting proposition. What do you think was the highlight reel of this era?As in, a list of maybe 10 of that era's anime that one ought to see to get what you're talking about...

 No.651

As in the 80s or 90s? Things like 90s anime breaking down into stills more requires watching lots and lots of TV anime from both decades, so a highlight reel is less applicable there. Or are you wondering what were in my opinion the boundary breaking productions of the 90s?

The first 20 episodes of Ranma are insanely good, it's such a shame that the rest of the chapters are so bad.

I've been watching this anime.
So far it's a simple but well done story.
Due it's age it lacks in animation sequences, but it more than makes up for it with Dezaki's great directing.
And the artstyle is really charming.

A tv channel decided to air the whole serie in one day so i decided to do a rewatch, i remember the animation being more fluid.

Seemingly RoV is getting a new adaption for it's 50th. I wonder how it'll be done.

I think the original is perfect as is, so I'm not sure what, if anything, they can add.

Aesthetically and shot-wise it's really good, but animation is poor. So maybe they'd improve that aspect. But I doubt it would look as good

Correction: Ikeda was the manga author. The first director on the anime was Tadao Nagahama, who had previously done Star of the Giants and the Robot Romance Trilogy. I believe he left because of some sort of artistic conflict, and then Dezaki took over.

Sadly, Nagahama died later that year, which is probably why you haven't heard of him.

>>613
Yeah, the animation is weirdly stiff, especially in the early eps. I think Toei didn't allocate enough budget for the costumes, all those ruffles and trimming must've been hell on the animators.

>Due it's age it lacks in animation sequences

I wouldn't really associate that with age. Stuff from the 70s like Gatchaman, Gutsy Frog, The Romance Robot Trilogy, lots of the WMT shows, etc all have plenty of nice animation. It seems more like a Dezaki thing - strong shot composition and drawings, but generally a low drawing count. Though Cobra is nuts animation wise a lot of the time.

I love ROV, I need to re-watch it again as it's been too long. While of course some of the nobles can be over the top evil, the overall situation was presented with a pretty good degree of nuance, and its hard to not love Oscar.

Feel free to delete if this thread is too specific but I think it might be nice to have a thread where anons help each other identify anime that they only hazily remember but still want to watch.

I say this might be nice because I'm currently having this very issue. It's a one or two episode Girls with Guns OVA from the 90s, not Gunsmith Cats but sort of like it, maybe a bit more scifi? It had "Uta" in the name. It didn't seem super well known but it looked right up my alley, I jist forgot to write the name down. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

I'm not even sure these were all part of the same anime but might as well give it a shot.

Specifically remember 3 scenes from it:

1. Main character (brown haired?) is walking down the street until he comes across a (blue haired?) woman being harassed by a pair of thugs. At first he just watches, but eventually things get rawnchy so he decides to finally act. Suddenly a mysterious power awakens within him, allowing him to beat up the thugs with ease. The woman then approaches him, revealing she's some kind of priest/oracle looking for for a "chosen one" as hailed by a prophecy, and the protagonist seems to fit the bill.

2. A quartet of demons (the four horsemen of the apocalypse?) spawn in a city and start to wreck havoc all around. I specifically recall a part in which a female demon enters a train and decimates everything on her path, until suddenly she stops in front of a regular looking businessman and gives him a seductive look before draining his life out and continuing with her rampage.

3. An older guy plus some kids are stuck on a facility in an isolated island watching news about the chaos in the city. The older guy comments about how glad he is for being safe on the island, while the kids complain that they're hungry and have no food. The guy suggests they could start a fire and cook their shoes since they're made of horse leather and thus technically edible. The kids get weirded out but he decides to try it out anyway and fails.

As a bonus this was probably in spanish, can't remember if it was subbed or dubbed. I've tried skimming over the synopses of shows that aired on channels that I watched as a kid but nothing seemed to match, so for all I know this could have been a local channel airing whatever they got a hold off without actually having a license for it.

Damn no.1 sounds extremely familiar. Off the top of my head it reminded me of a couple of anime none of which fit the description DNA³ or 3x3 eyes

Hit a huge milestone in my quest to watch every anime opening ever. I finished the 20th Century!

I started with only caring about TV openings, but realizing that my experience would neglect classics like "Gunbuster" or "Dirty Pair Project Eden" I expanded it to cover all anime. That means I've checked out everything, TV, OVA, Hentai, Specials, OVAs, and Music Videos (Exceptions would be lost anime or anime not listed in the MAL database.)

Along the way, I curated a list of what I consider to be notable anime OPs. I've separated the notably good and the notably bad apart from each other (unremarkable openings are off the list). This list is raw and unorganized (only by year and only at a first impression). I figured you guys might want to see it.

Any suggestions of a better way I could present the data would be appreciated.

What are your favorite retro anime openings?

 No.547

Small FAQ:
-I define "Anime" as "Japanese animation" so no Korean or Chinese stuff, and I don't care what medium.
-I judge anime OPs based on the version IN THE ANIME, I don't just listen to songs. I care about the music and the visuals as a wholistic work.
-Notably bad could be good to you, often they are experimental and you may find you like them and I don't. Same goes for some I put under good, they might not work for you.
-I don't speak Japanese, so if you do and I missed something you love because of the lyrics, or I have something here that you hate because of the lyrics, sorry, not able to judge based on that.

In an interview conducted in conjunction with the event, he talked about his future goals. Writing a sequel to “ZETMAN” in addition to a new manga on the theme of ghost stories, which he says he has recently become more interested in. He has apparently set his sights on remaking “Wingman” and “Video Girl” Katsura said, “Video Girl is difficult, but I have an idea for Wing Man. I would like to draw a continuation of the previous one and give it a modern twist. It is a sequel rather than a reboot. I think it would be more interesting that way,” he said.

*Wingman Spoilers here I don't know if there are spoiler tags*

The final episode of the 13-volume book depicts the decision of the main character, Kenta, to discard all memories of Wingman in order to save Aoi’s life. Katsura revealed part of his idea: “I think that when Kenta, who has forgotten everything, and Aoi, who remembers everything, meet, a drama is born.
