So, it happened AGAIN. We can blame /qa/, we can blame PHP, we can praise the hacker’s effort, but the truth is it's simply not enough. Tactics, determination, you name it, it all stinks.

Don't get me wrong, I still have full faith in the lads, but massive reinforcements are desperately needed in the mod team right now. Otherwise I'm not very optimistic about this upcoming reopening, or our chances in the /4cc/ for that matter. Not like this. What do you think, /4ug/?

Denying subhuman rightards in /pol/, /r9k/ & /news/ etc the right to have opinions is but a small price to pay for the downfall of 4chan. While there are things in my life I enjoyed that will never exist again, my life goes on. People lived before 4chan existed, they'll continue to live after. There are so many sites/forums etc that no longer exist. I have gotten over those facts. Everyone else must. Everything has its time. Move on.

I don't have any love for the jannies but I can't even imagine what it must be like to try and monitor some absolute garbage threads.
The Jannies sucked overall though, someone keept spamming the claude threads on /v/ with cp and was seemingly never banned.

In hindsight, the recently-aired Ave Mujica was a disappointment. Based on how people were talking about it I had assumed it would be "the most dramatic anime ever" "I can't believe they allow this on TV!" and sure there were dramatic parts but it really didn't get all that crazy (rather, some crazy stuff happened, but there were no consequences). And of course that would be the case - it is tied to a gacha game. I really should have known better. I still liked it, but I was expecting a masterpiece.

For manga, it's probably Chainsaw Man Pt. 2. It really is such a shame how it has turned out. The plot is incoherent, I don't give a damn about the characters, and the art is such a decline from the peaks of Fire Punch and Pt 1 (it really was cruel of them to take away all of his assistants). I loved the ending of Pt 1, I loved the two one-shots in between, and I loved the beginning of Pt 2, but after the aquarium it just hasn't been up to snuff.

I guess we could talk about what grinds your gears. It's superficial, but we could start with what you don't like about /a/ and see how we measure up on the "it's better by virtue of being not as bad" scale.
Probably the biggest turn off for here and most alts is speed. It's a catch-22. If you guys jumped ship and posted here it wouldn't be so slow, but because it's already slow you don't want to take the risk and find you're the only one of your peers to go. Change is scary.

It just takes time and knowledge. Understanding concepts like suji, when to riichi, when to go for a quick hand and even just folding in general can take you very far. For the most part, playing defensive is the best way to win. Better to lose 3000 in the noten bappu than to lose 8000 to a direct hit mangan.

The more you play, the more you understand what to go for, how to go for it and how to play better. It really does just take some time to get used to it. You can even get some interesting stories out of it. I remember one time I was up against three riichi's and had to use everything I could to avoid dealing in until eventually riichiing myself to end the game (since you can't have 4 riichi's in a game) which was able to save me from losing my 1st place position as someone was going to deal into someone and going for a quick win next turn meant I got all 4 riichi sticks adding 4000 points to my score.

Nothing Akagi tier but still was very tense.

Right now I'm watching Captain Harlock (1979), Samurai Flamenco (not wap), Gundam X, and Ideon with friends.

Only a little bit into Captain Harlock, so mostly I'm just impressed with how stylish it all is. I sing along with the theme song every time.

I'm enjoying Gundam way more than I thought I would. Yes, it loses some of the post-apocalyptic feel after the first couple of episodes and it feels like the world has stabilized on a bit higher of a standard of living than I think is entirely reasonable, but it feels very…refreshing, for lack of a better word. Garrod openly likes Tiffa and is willing to say so, and she clearly returns his affections, which puts them both above 95% of anime couples at the get-go. Newtypes feel less like space magic and more mysterious, like in 0079 (yes I know about DOME, I played Alpha Gaiden, but I'm trying to take the show as its own thing) The adults feel like adults, and the kids are plausible kids that were forced to grow up fast. It's just feels low-bullshit.

Ideon is incredibly Tomino. This is both a good and a bad thing, but mostly good for me. Kitty Kitten :(

I've been having fun with Appleseed recently.
I wouldn't call it great, because I don't think it is a great work of sci-fi, beyond the artwork, but I will call it very good. There are too many issues with the writing to be great. But there's more than enough there to be very good.
I think it does count as the first real 'solarpunk' work, however. So it did innovate in that lens.
Otherwise it is very close to Otomo's work.

Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the first volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping the one short story by Rumiko Takahashi and Mitsuru Ikegami that came out around this time called "My Sweet Sunday". Today, the scans I have of the one shot are the official VIZ ones.

Here's the relevant portion of the interview with the editor:

"Inuyasha was rather serious and hard-hitting, so Takahashi-sensei said, "The next one will be a comedy that can be read casually." As a big fan of Ranma 1/2 I was overjoyed to meet with her to discuss the new serial.

However, although the setting and the stage were decided upon, the image of the main character, which is the basis of Takahashi-sensei's works, seemed to be difficult for her to grasp, and then, two weeks before the start of the serialization, I suggested, "How about the main character living in a school?" "Why?" she asked, "Because he is poor!" I replied.

Suddenly, the teacher turned serious. "Poor… Poor? I see… that could be interesting." "Does being poor mean that you have been wearing the same jersey all your life?" And then, in no time at all, Rinne Rokudo was born. I remember I was so thrilled because I felt like I was witnessing the moment a character came down to Takahashi-sensei.

Sensei loves TV and always checked out the comedy programs. Her favorite comedian changed every year, and in a good way, she wasn't picky, and I think she always caught the mood of the times when it came to "what makes people laugh." The low tension interaction between Rinne and Sakura was totally novel, completely different from the high tension gag character Tatewaki Kuno, who I liked the most in Ranma.

The page I chose is from the first chapter, where the identity of the main character is revealed. Immediately after this page, Sakura has a puzzled expression on her face, "What's going on…?" The monologue is "My name is ●●! And my occupation is ●●!" and give some flavor to them. The dialogue between the two is classic…! This is my favorite scene that made me realize once again that Rumiko Takahashi is a genius.

Kyokai no RINNE 1st editor - Shunsuke Moteki (茂木俊輔)
Takahashi: Even after you were no longer assigned to this project, I was very grateful for your occasional comments. I'm very happy that it has been adapted into an anime."

If you ever do give Tenchi Muyo a watch though, definitely start with the first two Ryo-Ohki OVAs, and if you end up liking those check out the TV series.

Character backgrounds and overarching plot are different for the two OVAs and the show but if you're just interested in great character interactions there's plenty of that to go around.

You know how in slayers, there is a multiverse composed of 4 worlds, slayers being one of those worlds and Lost Universe being one of the other? Tenchi muyo is like that but cranked up to 11. Every show is basically it's own dimension/seperate universe that is being manipulated by the three goddess's that created reality (3 of the girls from the show).

So each show tends to have its own theme and is a different genre. The most dnd/slayers like fantasy tenchi muyo would probably be "Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar" also known as "Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari" which is about tenchi's nephew being sent to a fantasy world called geminar where he has to pilot fantasy knight mecha and fight with abunch of fantasy races. But its closer to escaflowne than slayers. Either way, thats a 2000s show. In the 90s one, I think universe is the best. But its more like lost universe than slayers, it's modern fantasy scifi with a jp twist.

I love the anime out there but I do wish there was one that faithfully adapted the manga. It could get surprisingly dark. Makimura's death and Ryo's revenge against the drug cartel actually spanned a whole arc in the manga and it could get pretty dark with Angel Dust junkie zombies being involved. Ryo even brutally kills people like in pic related and derided pleasure out of mentally torturing and killing scum like the guy who kidnapped, raped, and killed women.

Not sure if it needs a thread but it's not like we're overflowing with discussion here ;), still I recently started watching the original HxH anime from 1999. I have never actually watched/read any of HxH and all I know of it was that it's permanently on hiatus, that cat girl (or boy?) that everyone posts a lot and the designs of the MC's. I decided to give it a shot for no real reason and so far I've been enjoying it.

I've watched YYH last year and enjoyed that as well. I found Season 1 of YYH to be good, 2 to be great the first half of 3 to be fantastic and then it kinda falls off after Sensui is introduced which was a shame, but it's nice to know that Togashi hasn't lost it with HxH.

I will say the first couple of episodes were...fine, I'm still not entirely sure what the plot is. Sure, Gon is trying to find his father and that's the goal but the whole idea of Hunters just seem odd. The fact Gon and that other hunter in the first episode were seen hunting animals and Gon wants to become a hunter kind of makes you think Hunter's are animal hunters, but then they add several characters who don't really fit that niche at all which makes the term "Hunter" kind of confusing. I guess it's more like a catchall term for someone who is exceptional and reliable in everything and thus the guy you go to for troubles, like an official bounty hunter or mercenary.

Character wise, I enjoy them a lot. What surprises me the most about this show was that I expected Gon to be the main part of the whole show and everyone else to sort of be secondary characters who don't really interact with one another since it's about Gon and his story, but it's actually pretty cool to see Leorio and Kurapika be together a lot and see their histories and helping each other out and such. I also like how Gon and Killua have a really normal friendship. They basically act like kids their age would act if they were friends. Which is very surprising since I thought Killua would be very stoic and not want to be friends with Gon but he opened up pretty damn quickly to him. Hell their dynamic feels like the other way around. Killua should be the MC and Gon is the friend who helps him out of his shell, but it's not like that at all.

I'm currently on episode 27 and the final part of the Hunter exam. I found the first section (running) to be a bit lacklusterPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Sorry for the late reply, some stuff got in the way but I did finish HxH. I found the ending of HxH to be quite good, when I figured out why they brought the Accompany card I was actually pleasantly surprised and enjoyed how the 1999 version had a pretty decent ending when HxH still goes on until today. It's a shame they could only bring three cards and used them up at the end, I would've loved if they kept a certain, literal ace up their sleeve of an Angel's Breath or something for when a fight was wayyyyy too difficult for them.

I enjoyed the final fight with Bomber but I do think it was a bit lackluster to have a random bad guy introduced at the end of the series to be the final bad guy defeated by Gon, still a great fight though.

>>731
>Yeah in the Hunter eaxm. He was suppressing his Nen without knowing what Nen was which got Hisoka very excited.
Alright, that's pretty cool I like that.

>Like you say the Dodgeball starts with bullshit "let me just copy" myself but then you have to respect the rules, emission is not efficient, enhancement makes you more powerful, In can hide nen....ect
Honestly, after you explained Nen and I actually started to pay attention to what was happening in the show I started to enjoy it more. I originally thought it was bullshit powers that were limited by whatever Togashi wanted to limit them by, but after finishing the dodgeball fight and the fight with The Bomber I finally saw that it was a lot more deeper than it seemed.

When he split into 7 copies he didn't really have any other ability beyond that, he was just powerful himself and once I noticed that I enjoyed the fight a bit more because he was VERY powerful but that was the limit of his power which Gon, Killua and Hisoka were able to bypass. Also, Hisoka being on their side for a bunch of episodes was great.

>>732
>I was refreshing up on Nen after reading this thread and it's interesting to even look at something as basic as the category hexagon.
In a way, I wish Nen was explained either during fights or in a way that wasn't so God damn boring. When they were explaining this hexagon I really thought it wouldn't be that Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

Well there's always the Chimera Ant arc which many consider to be the peak of the series. But I would say there's no rush if you enjoyed the experience. take a year or so off from the series dwell on it allow yourself to forget it and then maybe watch HxH 2011 from the beginning to the end, it does end on a much better note than Greed Island.

 No.3212

>>734
Doubt you're still here but I thought I'd bump the thread due to the increase in users since maybe there will be a few more posts about HxH to some degree. Anyhow, just want to say that a lot of the opinions I've expressed in this thread have changed massively since watching 2011 (which I'll try to keep to a minimum in terms of discussion and would rather use it to relate to 1999)

For one, I actually like and understand Nen now and I'm not sure if you've watched the 1999 version but it actually does a terrible terrible job of explaining Nen, and showing it be used in a satisfying way. In the 2011 version you learn that Nen is sort of an ability that everyone has but only a few can master and if they can they're treated as geniuses or super humans (with examples such as a world class boxer or genius musician) which then leads into explaining each part of Nen and then we see Nen in action in the Hisoka v Kastro fight. Meanwhile the 1999 version pretty much explains Nen as being sort of like "willpower" or the power of our spirit, goes straight into Ten, Zetsu, Ren and Hatsu, uses an example of using Ten to intimidate Killua and then it's straight to training, then fucking SKIPS the Kastro fight where you can see and learn Nen in action and we're just meant to understand it with probably a fucking 2 minute explanation of the whole thing.

It never improves from there, meaning that someone like me (where 1999 was the first HxH thing I saw). I was completely lost on Nen from the start. 2011 by comparison does whatever it can to show each part of Nen with examples, fights and even showing that when Gon was hiding from Hisoka he was using Zetsu unknowingly. It just reinforces everything so well that it makes so much more sense.

Which is a real shame because while 1999 has a better Hunter exam in my opinion, it drops the ball by the time Nen enters the picture. Perhaps I'm an idiot and Nen was explained PERFECTLY well here but I honestly feel like I was completely and utterly lost by the time it was introduced and underway. Skipping the Kastro fight along with giving such a lackluster explanation of Nen is just terrible for the show. It's still entertaining since I did find Yorknew and Green Island enjoyable but it just loses so much by the Nen explanation being so poor as I believed Nen was just magic bullshit but it's actually a system that's qPost too long. Shameless shilling is shameless, but I have been operating an episode-by-episode 1999 Hunter x Hunter for a few months. Essentially I just slowly talk about each episode, what they do differently, and how they might contribute to 1999's overall alternative take on the material.

I've made a few interesting discoveries while doing this- primarily in contrasting how Gon and Killua get characterized here in comparison to the manga, but also getting way more information on the alt ending that even more dedicated Japanese fans didn't know (entirely thanks to making a thread about it at the right time on 4/a/).

I am the BIGGEST ToriyamaFRIEND here probably, and my preferred method of viewing is in Japanese with the broadcast audio, though I have a slight nostalgia for the original ocean dub- specifically, this DVD that was packaged in boxes of Kraft Dinner in Canada that recapped the first two arcs of Dragon Ball Z.
I also do have a deeper soft spot for those shitty DVD singles Funimation did (not the bricks) and have slowly been building a collection of them starting from Dragon Ball.
Really funny thing about them is that Funimation could not legally publish the Dragon Ball Volume 1 'Saga of Son Goku' DVD in the west, so they just started from volume 2. You can get volume 1 but only from Australia (which means it's retardedly rare).

 No.3190

For Dragon Ball Z I've been checking out Dragon Ball Z Jartcut, that tries to remove as much filler as possible. So far I've only watched the Saiyan saga, I'd say it's pretty alright although I admit that some padding during the training for the saiyans would have been good, as it is it feels very fast (mostly an issue in the manga too).
From what I heard they were going to update it when the Seed Of Might Color Correction is released, using it as base.

I own the two Ocean dub DVDs of Dragonball (Not Z) that are the first 13 episodes and the first movie, those are technically part 2 even if not labeled as because they didn't redub it till TV airings.

Yeah, that one isn't hard to find because it got super overproduced. I haven't really considered nabbing it for my collection just because I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon. Right now I'm just waiting for a Saga of Son Goku DVD to pop up (and a "Red Ribbon Army Saga" DVD since those have vanished into the ether).

What I'm more excited to start collecting are the later DVD Box Sets- love how clean a lot of these sets were where you get Volume 1 of a "saga" and then fill it up with the other volumes. GT especially has four slick box sets that are probably the best thing about the show.

I can understand finding the Sketchbook manga insufferable. It's largely anti-humor, but I like it because of that. The Hidarmari Sketch manga should be ending soon in terms of chapter count but it's been 9 months since the last chapter so that slows things down a lot.

For the longest time I've been wanting to make a thread for Bee Train anime, so I've decided to finally get around to it. Kouchi Mashimo's "hospital for animators" is probably most well known for their "Girls With Guns" trilogy: Noir, Madlax, and El Cazador de la Bruja, but have several other lesser known series like Avenger, Tsubasa Chronicle, and the .hack series.

Have you anons been watching any Bee Train anime lately? Do you have a favorite?

Hey anon. No hope you're still around, but how do you feel about Cal? Why did Reiji rush things so much? Really what stopped him from at least checking in once? The Cal was just waiting there while he fled without looking back. Maybe because of Elen? Still that part felt so wrong. And the way Cal appears later tore my heart, it was so sad.

 No.536

Sometimes I think about starting Noir again until I remember that I have to listen to that fucking awful OP. Rest of the soundtrack is good though, as usual for Kajiura.

I'm still here. And I agree, Cal deserved better.
He should have made more of an effort to search for her after the apartment bombing, rather than assuming that she was dead. Perhaps Elen had his focus and the trauma of being reunited with someone he thought was dead while at the same time losing someone else was overwhelming?

It reminds me a little bit of the relationship between Mireille/Kirika/Chloe in Noir. What happened to Chloe in the end was sad, I remember being heartbroken when I first saw it. But one of the key differences being the Noir trio were fulfilling the centuries-old prophecy of a secret society.
And the Phantom of Inferno visual novel came out a year before Noir, so I'm sure that influenced it heavily.

I'm really liking this OVA. The art and direction are good and you can see them experimenting with the editing. All the characters are nicely designed. Key herself is robotic but doesn't feel like a rigid cookie cutter anime character, she's stiff and aloof, a bit jerky and autistic, but still feels like a person. Story wise, there's a lot to digest here, migration from a rural village to the anonymous and noisy city, the struggle to find your place in the world, desire to be human, danger of weapons, conflict between what Key wants (to be a real girl and have friends) and what the corpos want.

One thing that really sticks out in a lot of anime are human-like relationships with non-human robots. Bots can be friends, they can have feelings that should be respected, they can be cared for. Compare that to American pop culture where robots are almost always associated with danger and fear or enslavement (e.g. Terminator, Ex Machina). I knew an anthropologist who said the difference is the influence of 'animism' in Japanese society? Whatever the reason, I really like this and I'm happy shows like this exist.

Cowboy Bebop is boring. Outlaw Star has cute girls, Taoist magic, and intergalactic space temples and better action scenes. Yet we we're deprived of a sequel! Why do people even like Cowboy Bebop so much? Its not even that good! Well okay that's just annoyingly contrarian, its a good show just not as great at the hype train makes it out to be.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is also overrated. The battle scenes are absurd. How can one man command so many vessels? It makes no sense. The average admiral can't even command one battle group properly but in LOTGH they can command hundreds of ships at once? No communications breakdown? Its like playing a crappy Paradox strategy game, having billion units, and realizing your brain doesn't have the mental processing power to manage them all but somehow they can do it. The story is Star Wars level Evil Nazi Coded Empire vs Space America. Its like choosing between slitting your throat or jumping into a fire.

Serial Experiments Lain is a great show but why isn't there more love for Texhnolyze?

Evengelion is good but overrated. Everybody knows this already. People are just mad at how popular it is.

>Satoshi Kon had presonal feelings about how it negatively affected japanese culture
>>No, the film is not based on any criticism. If the audience get the impression from watching the film that the idol system in Japan is like that, I'm embarrassed. Of course I did research before making the film and I visited a number of these idol events, but I didn't see the kind of example that is used in the film. Also, to reveal behind-the-scenes secrets about the entertainment world was never my intention. I simply wanted to show the process of a young girl maturing, becoming confused because her old set of values gets shattered, but who is reborn as a mature being as a result of that. That's what I wanted to describe. But because I had to stick with the idea of an idol, the film came to talk about that particular world.

 No.3121

>>3119
That's interesting but I don't think we have to be anchored to Satoshi Kon's intent to interpret Perfect Blue in our own way. Although this brings up other problems, like Western audiences inserting their own autistic value system into everything such that Ranma becomes non-binary or something and every Gibli movie is about Shinto and nature.

One thing I don't like about Perfect Blue is that it feels too optimistic. Mima recovers at the end, discovers the truth about the imposter, ends up pretty secure in her sense of self. But 21st cen. urban post-modern consumer life this doesn't really happen. We're all broken, mixed up, and confused, and we don't get an opportunity to fix ourselves like this. We're all disassociated, and anxious with a warped sense of reality. You can never find the real you. Its just endless insecurity with no resolution. I'd like to think that the ending where Mima looks in the mirror and says she's the real Mima is darker that it seems, like she's just falling for yet another image in the mirror.

Fair enough, I did say it was likely, not definite. I'm really only speculating here. Was more a fan of Paprika anyway.

>>3121
I'm pretty certain that was the point, and the whole idea of the film's end being optimistic is a deliberate falsity. It's a false optimistic ending where psychologically there's still deep trauma and damage lurking under the surface Mima deliberately avoids. Without spoiling the film, it sort of mirrors Taxi Driver, where the horror is despite what's happened, Travi is still himself, but with Perfect Blue Mima is bright and bubbly in her running away and denying the core issue.

>Why do people even like Cowboy Bebop so much?
It got the right exposure, and that largely determined popularity back in an era where we didn't have streaming and anime was less accessible.
It also resonates with a lot of people in the west because it is quite 'western' itself. It's kinda neo-noir, the characters are cowboys/bounty hunters but in space. A serviceable english dub for normalfrens. A fantastic soundtrack. It isn't surprising its popularity has endured

>why isn't there more love for Texhnolyze?

Because its slow and doesn't have the same aesthetic appeal and 'wtf' energy of Lain to keep people engaged.

Hi! I didn't like Perfect Blue's ending either. Not because it was too optimistic, honestly. I just didn't like the conclusion to the setup. As far as mysteries go, it felt like such a disappointing conclusion after all the mindbending stuff set up in the first part.

The whole "the other ugly person in the movie was secretly evil" felt like such a weak reveal. I know it was set up in that she was also an idol, but it felt really out of nowhere given the rest of the film.

If Jason Vorhees taught us never to hitchike, what did we ever learn from Urusei Yatsura?

The borderline Buddhist messaging is pretty clear when you realize Ataru's attachment to women is the source of the problem, not to mention Ran's obsessive rivalry with Lum and the way the Shinto master Cherry is obviously a fraud. Its like an absurd counterpart to Sex and Zen minus the graphic love scenes and Amy Yip's huge tits (although Lum doesn't exactly disappoint in that area). Chasing after girls skirts leads to karmic retribution in the form of forced marriage to an alien princess. But is the show encouraging me to seek carnel relations with alien women or dissuade me? I can't tell. Is it about the futility of sex? Is Ataru the boy Sisyphus doomed to be forever cockblocked?

I've been thinking about the rules the Haibane are supposed to live by. What do all these rules share? They are all things you either must do or are not supposed to do with your body. We generally don't think about our bodies that much but its pretty clear that even simple ways of sitting, standing, and walking are learned and become a habit to the point we don't even think about them. Many societies have developed sophisticated techniques of the body e.g. yoga, Taoist sex practices, Buddhist vinaya or even mundane things like boxing, wrestling etc. but for us this has become a faded concept, besides sport. We're generally told that (as long as we don't break the law) it doesn't matter what we do with our bodies, we can be good people despite how we dress, eat, who we sleep with. Techniques of the body aren't aimless. They are meant to achieve something e.g. escape from the cycle of rebirth or becoming a champion athlete. I wonder what the purpose is for the Haibane? It can't just be the day of flight. I guess its also an attitude to life? An emotional state?

Part of me wants to try living by Haibane rules to see what it does to you. I can't exactly work for free and not handle money and the walls rule doesn't apply so maybe its a bit of a pointless exercise? There are abandoned buildings nearby and I can go to thrift stores for clothes, but obviously the walls thing doesn't apply and there's no way I can just work for free and not handle any money so maybe its a pointless exercise?

What's the consensus on the steins;gate anime? I played the visual novel on ps vita many years ago and really enjoyed it but I'm not sure I have it in me to do the whole VN again. Is the anime a worthy adaptation?
Also are there any shows that capture the same vibe as the novel that you'd recommend? Are the other games in this series good?
1 post omitted. Click reply to view.

 No.402

I can't tell you what the consensus was since for the life of me I've never actually talked about Steins;Gate before, but the anime is worth watching if you played the VN before. It is a VN adaptation so it won't match up to the VN 100% like every other adaptation, but it is still watchable on its own. Biggest problems I had with it were with the pacing of the anime over the VN, but if you want to watch the anime give it a shot.

 No.403

File: 1731520795340.jpeg(473.68 KB, 1352x1920, 00003.jpeg)

If it has been a while since you read it the anime should be a good way to see it again. I'd count it as a great adaptation.
As for the rest you should play the 0 VN and then pretend it never got an anime. I'd count the VN as nearly as good as the original and the anime as among the worst adaptations I've seen and I'm generally not that harsh on them. I didn't even think the Urasekai adaptation was that bad.

 No.404

I never played the VN but as someone who doesn't often rewatch anime, I always make sure to watch it again at least once a year. One of my favorites for sure

 No.405

It's good, especially if you have a familiarity with the story already, but it does its own thing obviously so don't go into it expecting a 1:1 adaption. The creators of the anime took creative liberties to adapt it their way and I think it's a good watch.

anime isnt nearly as good in my opinion

Today I watched a movie called metamorphosis/wings of change that apparently also had quite a bit of American involvement (and I mean apparently this movie had some American animators involved including Virgil Ross of looney tunes fame best known for designing bugs bunny), another animator on the Japanese side of things is maya matsuyama who also did other Sanrio works and later was an animator on Pokémon! TFW I just learned that an animator for Golden age looney tunes and an animator for 90s Pokémon worked on the same project. Crazy stuff

Is it me or does the online lain fandom miss the entire point of the show? I'm pretty sure the message isn't that Lain is a cyber goddess or pushing some kind of tech gnosticism or accelerationist pseudo-philosophy.

The general themes seem to be on Japanese family breakdown, lonliness and atomization, and technology causing a hyperreal breakdown of the world. There's also the conspiracy history of the internet being invented by aliens but also theological stuff about the soul and religion too, which I'm guessing is just added on as a way to create artificial depth.

It's about a lot of things, because everything is interconnected in some invisible way, which again is one of the themes of the show. I think a lot of it is about death. Not just the one big death, but all the kinds of little death. Death of ego, death of innocence, death of the spirit, death of the body, death of the mind, death as a means of escapism, a quiet death of society that no one really even notices. Suicide, social suicide, decentralized unintentional mass suicide, murder without killing.

Or maybe I'm just some wacko.

The show seems to be saying that interconnectedness is a bad thing. This isn't a mystical metaphysical interconnectedness, but everyone's interactions being mediated by a single technological system they have no control over. Slowly some people's existence gets forgotten, they become faceless nobodies or people don't notice other important people in their lives are dead or need help or like Lain they are easily manipulated by freaks on the internet. So in that sense its about social death and the death of society. SEL is sort of weird because on the one hand its very anti-tech and pessimistic but on the other its fascinated with tech.

I thought it was awful coincidental that the most relevant character to the Western fandom (particularly those who frequent anime centric websites) would be the one who had the cameo. I would have expected Sakaki or Chiyo, since they were the most prominent characters in the actual series. (They may have already had cameos; I've never read Yotsuba&!) I wonder if the Japanese see Osaka the way many of us see her and that inspired the decision. Or maybe the mangaka sees her as we do! It's all speculation.

Well, I'm watching fancy Lala. it starts off a bit weak, but begins to channel what was so good about the '80s Pierrot Mahou Shoujo shows as it goes on: that dreamy kind of surreal take on magic and allowing it to interact with believable slice of life scenarios, and like Creamy Mammy it has the idol element front and center.Occasionally the animation and storyboarding gets quite strong as well , It's not really on the level of the '80s shows, but it's not unsatisfying that regard.

What about you, anon?

Taking a shot in the dark here to see if anybody might be able to lead me in the right direction.
Im trying to find complete raw in any video format of the original broadcast version of the Hellsing TV anime. If you are not familiar with what that is the show originally had many scenes redone for what i guess was more "consistentcy" after it aired and for home release. This isnt about what is better just interested in something complete to watch.
I found a few random episodes here and there but not the whole show complete or unsubbed/dubbed.
Obviously some sub groups back in the day had them for their uploads but those groups are all dead and gone, nyaa doesnt seem to have it and all the resources i use to look for older stuff has dried up.

Ive seen a few claims these were on DVD but not one person actually backing those claims up.
The earliest DVD release i can find dates for are the Rescripts VHSs and DVDs which came out a week or so after the show ended its original broadcast(release date for Rescript 1 is 1/25/2002), the earliest DVD releases america got was in june of 2002 and they arent on any of those.

She’s smart in a shallow soulless way. She doesn’t actually make money. She steals it from others. I wouldn’t describe her as stoic. Anyway, love is something selfless and Nabiki is a selfish greedy sociopath. The only person she’s in love with is herself. Isn’t it strange that she seems to have no friends? I mean they are never on screen. Probably because everyone knows she’s a psychopath.

I started watching this the other day. I was curious if it was just nostalgia for a lame girls' show, or if it was any good.
I'm enjoying it. I'm the simple sort of person that just wants to know what's next, so the monster of the week format is fine with me.
Sakura is cute. The cards are cool. Tomoyo isn't that interesting to me, but she's extremely similar to Kozue from the 2003 VN "Snow Sakura". It isn't surprising, but it was just kind of neat to see what might be the source of inspiration for the character.

Lum, Sakura, and Ryuunosuke would be a tossup honestly, because Ryuu would get so many votes from the girls. Lum's super popular, but mostly with some of the boys, a dedicated diehard fanbase (like us nominating UY2022 as best anime of the year) can't win against sheer numbers (Frieren as an example).

Shinobu and Ran would be fighting for the last place, but agree with the reasoning for both. Ran has fans, but also probably a hatedom.

Lum popularity extend to other school, and she was the only one gettin cheers when she won the preliminaries. We can't underestimate that. In sheer popularity she's probably above the rest. Not that it transcribes in votes, but it's her biggest strenght. Her weakness are the girls, she doesn't have any girl friend in school and they're probably jealous because of Mendou's interest in her. So she can only rely on boys.
Ryuu popularity with girls depend, she got pretty much all the freshmen girls, but she also got her own hatedom "Anti-Ryuunosuke Faction" which forced a part of the Ryuu's fandom to change their vote. She isn't liked much by third years for some reason. But she'd get a fair amount of second-years i feel like, they seemed to be fan too. She also got the "Pessimistic attention-getter" which consist of boys, so she still got a really good amount of support. Even if they don't seem to be that strong of a faction so probably not that any compared to the others.
I don't think Sakura could win against the other two. But she's still really popular with both boys and girls, which is important as it could affect Lum/Ryuu score. Second year girls would also vote for her, same for third year (Who are splitted with Shinobu instead), She's got elegance and feminity, which is what a lots of girl would vote for instead of Ryuu's "We hate men" fandom. Same issue for Lum, Sakura got all the boys drooling, so the votes would be split and would weaken her somewhat.
It all depends on the girl/boy ratio in the school i guess, but either Ryuu or Lum would win, with Sakura not far behind.

I'm a bit surprised there isn't a thread for this one already. I've read the first omnibus of the Kodansha translations for this one so far (that is, right before the Phantom GT-R race.) I have to say that I actually appreciate this not being entirely a racing series. At least to this point, it seems more so focused on drama - the playing of what a character wants and their ability to obtain what they want, what a character knows and what a character is capable of and how those two shape reactions. It's not particularly deep in execution, but it does what it does pretty well anyway. All of the characters seem to be jerks, but they don't seem to just be mean for no reason; they rage, they swoon, they mourn, they have real opinions of other things in the world, and all of these things make them the jerks they are. Takumi is the only one who isn't a jerk, but that has more to do with his discipline and how he was raised than it does with racing or passion. The growth that is being set up for him may challenge that. I can look past the very generic "the MC is so much different and special" aspect of the series because the mangaka gives the characters good characterization around this premise, including Takumi. The racing scenes are very well done too. I'm not educated on racin, but it seems authentic. I believe Shigeno consulted a top-level touge racer for this series, and I can tell. The humor in this series is a bit weird, though. I wasn't expecting so many 4th wall breaks. This is an old series, so I'm sure you guys have better things to say on it than my newness can. How is the anime, too?

Or just retarded? Let's say a male falls in love with a female who he doesn't know is actually a male crossdresser despite this fact being repeatedly explained to him. How do we classify Kuno sexually? Well okay, Ranma isn't a crossdresser since he physically changes into a she and isn't pretending which complicates things a lot. I mean, theoretically it would be fine to be attracted to her when he's a her. I guess it would only be gay if the attraction also includes boy Ranma. Clearly, Akane is lesbian or some adjacent type of perversion but we knew this already. Seriously, what else explains that haircut? Soun betrothing his daughter to a gender bender was a stroke of genius. But when it comes to Kuno I see the following possibilities:

A. He is gay but doesn't realize it. Probably faps to 女装 JAV tapes and justifies it with "they are boys not men actually and this is traditional samurai nanshoku and therefore not gay." Rivalry with male Ranma is just his psychically repressed gayness. Why else is Kuno always around him?

B. Not gay. He's only turned on by the red haired pig tailed girl and is just a simple village pervert.

C. He's just retarded and fools can't consent so what does it matter anyway? But if he managed to sleep with girl Ranma (PLEASE GOD NOOOO!) would Kuno have successfully r *ped himself?

I like to think sexual identities are made up insanity Western label-mania and Kuno is like a platypus that fucks with the taxonomy. Maybe we need to mint a new orientation of brain damaged kendoka who are specifically pervy for guys that turn into girls but only when they are girls?

If the Earth is (apparently) dead and these people can't grow any vegetables what do they eat? How do the guys get so damn muscular? Imagine how much raw protein is needed to fuel those gigantic arms. Raoh even has a horse but what does it eat? And how did that fat fuck that Jagi sends to take out Ken get so damn huge? How does a wasteland sustain a guy with so much human whale blubber? I don't get why Raoh is so obsessed with being a conqueror either. Its not like there's anything worth conquering (except Yuria and maybe Bat and Lin if your a shameless pevert, hey I don't judge and even the Bible sanctions incest in uhh extreme circumstances). Raoh is just an emperor of wasteland, dirty radioactive dust bowl where nothing grows. What's the point? Sure, there are crowds of people, no idea how the population is that large though, but look at them.

I don't know if there's actual explanations to any of those questions, but I assume most people let them slide to focus on and enjoy the display of struggle, righteousness, and plain badassery. That's what I do, anyway. The apocalypse is just set-dressing to make life harder.
As for the other media, they're both good, but the manga has the quicker pacing. The anime would probably be a slog if you watch it for the "so bad its good" factor. Hell, I like it and I've still never finished it.

Finally caved in to modern anime, eh? I guess I'll contribute something here, my beloved Komi. I could go on endlessly about this series. The core premise is simple - Komi can't communicate, so Tadano helps her communicate, which is harder than it sounds with the likes of Itan High students. There are many short side plots, but most of the series is focused around this premise in some way or another. The series can really do a lot with it. I like the way it can take tropes and turn them into meaningful characters, with interesting personalities that can bounce off of all of the other kooky characters. The comedy in this series is funny but not obtrusive to the story at large. Komi and Tadano have what feels like such a real, though definitely romanticized, relationship. It's kind of a shame that there have been more and more meta elements added to the series, as the fact that it can be so grounded in such a fantastical world is what drew me to the series in the first place, but it's still been great up to the fifteenth volume. It feels odd to say, but the series feels very real for a series about a bunch of nutcases. There's no weird loser-princess gap bridging, no magic or science or anything, just a guy trying to help a girl make friends in a school of weirdos. I have never seen the anime, so I don't know how that is.

What do you think? Is Komi good social anxiety representation or just more moe disability fodder? Is the comedy too over the top or perfectly outgoing? Is Yamai too annoying or a great antagonistic force? Are the characters fun and personable or too quirky? Is the love plot balanced or too cliche? Do you even know Komi?

April's series is Kodocha - Miho Obana's high energy yet heartful series. I've only seen clips of this, so it'll be nice to actually sit down and give it a proper watch. The manga doesn't seem overly long which is nice.

Feel free to reply with any thoughts you have about this series!

You are my hero. I hereby award you this certificate of recognition, so that you may print this out and stick it on your fridge to let everyone know of your bravery and dedication.

Yeah the logic I was trying to go for was
>1
I imagine Joe and Kamille would being arguing about something since they're both hot headed to the point that Lina would get pissed at them too and you're just sitting next to three incredibly loud angry people
>2
Self explanatory
>3
Self explanatory
>4
Honestly, I should've switched Gendo and Usagi I guess. I think sitting next to Gendo would just be boring and he wouldn't want you to talk over him to Usagi if you wanted to, but maybe Usagi does nothing but watch movies or listen to music. I haven't seen Sailor Moon.
>5
I haven't seen Patlabor so I assumed Noa is above 18 and then assume Ryo would do everything he could to talk to her while avoiding you (unless you were a woman, then he'd spend a lot of time talking to you)
>6
Honestly I felt being ANYWHER near Griffith would be horrible but I also imagine Lupin would be doing something that's up to no good or perhaps chatting up Lum which would be annoying on a long flight.
>7
Self explanatory
>8
My logic was that since Tylor is a parody of Yang. Reinhardt would get into some discussion about something that eventually evolved into Reinhardt becoming completely dumbfounded by Tylor in general while whatever the hell happens in the row above being unknown.

Also I like to imagine if shit began going south quick the good guys would save the day. Griffith probably couldn't stand Lina's Dragon Slave and I'm sure some bullshit from Tylor will somehow make Dio's time stop malfunction.

Usagi is a typical teenage girl, immature, self-centered and complains a lot, but she is not a bad person. Lina might remind her of Rei, Sailor Mars, which would give in to an argument if they were close, but i don't think any of them would go overboard.

Noa is an adult, but maybe her tomboyish style would remind Ryo of Kaori. Irene might be more of the mokkori bijin type he'd go after.

I see Griffith as acting on ideals and with purpose, if you are on his way you are done for, otherwise you are safe, but he wouldn't act arbitrarily or out of annoyance. Either way, it's a lot that is not cast by you and maybe not really even by him. I don't think anything in there could stop events set in motion related to Griffith, it's the type of thing that can change the structure of reality. That's why I chose the Cthulhu protocol, if I see him there, I already think I'm fucked.

Toguro I see keeping to himself in common circumstances, but Lupin might be a type of guy who bothers him, and I'm certain Dio is.

Dio, even without time stopping power, is the one most likely of making things go out of control due to his psychotic unpredictability.

And Hisoka is probably ok (as long as you are no young boys on board).

Maybe Goku would be able to act fast enough to teleport the problem out of the plane, 2 or 3 might be good places to tip him off.

Original op here, sorry for the late response but this is pretty great lol. I’d pick 5 honestly, noa would be great have a long talk about mecha and the like, ryo as well though I haven’t seen city hunter (yet). Goddamnit goku you had to take rally’s spot although I can’t imagine what kind of things they’d chat about anyway. Also get dio, Griffith and that clown off the plane immediately, I’d rather have the lovely angels on the same flight

Ah! I never thought about The Dirty Pair. That would've been fun to add onto there instead of Gendo or Usagi. Maybe I should do another one with different characters for fun. Having ALL of pre-2000s anime to go through is kinda tough lol, still a lot of stuff I've never seen so a lot were just fun guesses. I wanted there to be bad guys on the plane no matter what to make each seat have a downside but I think having these two sitting in a row would just be trouble no matter, haha.
